 Hi!

Mike Lipscombe has directed NMW. And I'm not sure but I think that Michael Gondry has
directed Fire on Babylon.
Hope that helps.

Peace

Sinead O'Connor

Faith and Courage
(Atlantic/Warner Music)
A safe, but welcome, return for a pop maverick.
The saddest thing about Sinead O'Connor is that most
people haven't really given her much thought for 10
years. Not as a musician, anyway. She's that bald
woman; the one who tore up a picture of the Pope; the
woman who claims she is a Catholic priest; the mother
of two who came out as a lesbian.
The best thing about the often admirable and
attractive Faith and Courage is that it restores
Sinead O'Connor the songwriter and singer.
The trade-off is that while there are some powerful
songs here, they are often presented in a surprisingly
mainstream fashion, a compromise be-
tween her wide-ranging tastes - her love of hip-hop,
reggae and traditional Irish, sometimes all at once as
in The Lamb's Book of Life - and the need to get these
songs on the radio. It's surprising because compromise
was never an O'Connor trait, and her lyrics suggest
she doesn't apply it in her life.
Emotionally, you can understand much of the album from
The Lamb's Book of Life (along with Emma's Song, the
best song on the album), where she says that
everything in this world would be okay/If people just
believed enough in God to pray. Succour and peace are
the lyrical touchstones here, beginning with The
Healing Room's advice to feed the soul through 'Til I
Whisper U Something's tough nurturing of a friendship
and Emma's Song's unfiltered love to, finally, a
haunting, multi-ethnic, multifaithKyrie Eleison.
Even the assertive No Man's Woman - I don't wanna be
no man's woman/I've other work I want to get done-
resolves itself in an admission of deference: I don't
tell everything about the love I get/I've got a lovin'
man but he's a spirit ... and I'm forgiven oh a
million times.
With five separate producers, instrumentation that
ranges from programmed beats to tin whistle and
strings and the incorporation of dub, traditional
Irish, contemporary R&B and even the whiff of late
'80s pop, Faith and Courage shouldn't work. In part
it's held together by her voice, a voice capable of
delicacy but always just a breath away from
declamatory, from reaching out and grabbing you by the
throat and saying "listen to me". It's also kept
together by a tendency to pull back, to hold to a
mid-pace ballad tempo or resist the urge to let, for
example, dub scatter rhythms grab a hold.
Such conservatism is artistically disappointing but
maybe they - the record company, producers and, one
presumes, O'Connor - are right. Maybe she needs to
reclaim her place in the market before marking out a
bolder one.
- Bernard Zuel

Well, at last check, Sinead's faith & Courage has fallen to #195 on
Billboard after 9 weeks of release. She has probably sold about 125,000
copies of the album in the US, which is not too good at all. Hopefully, the
release of 'Jealous' and some renewed airplay on this great song will spur
more interest in the album. After all, Atlantic is in it for the long haul,
I think. 'Jealous' has a much better chance at becoming a hit than NMW,
particularly if the video is effective. Please...no Sinead with horses, or
floating around in fetal position inside a womb. No frog-dancing in muu
muus, no dressing up like Joan of Arc and attacking monster machines. Just
keep the camera on her face and let her mesmerize. I hope jealous is a hit,
cause this album deserves to be heard by millions, not just a relative few.
peace in Jah,
Jake

Speaking of the Queen Latifah show, has anyone heard
any word from the birds in the Queen's garden? I'm
sure someone would have announced it already if
they've heard when the show is going to be aired but I
just thought I'd ask just in case I missed it somehow.

Thanks!

Hello all!

I could finally get a hold on the Jay Leno performance and the Morning Show
one.

I still thought Sinead sang not as good as she used to.

Anyway... I wanted to know if it is normal I didn`t see Make me A channel Of
Your Peace? Was it only 4 the people attending or was it recorded and
broadcasted too?
If ever I am wrong and didn`t check well, could you please tell me when, in
the show, about, it is?

Thank U sooooooooooooooooo much.

By the way Emma`s Song is my fave now, and What doesn`t belong..., and The
Lamb`s book, and If U ever(in good order)
Jealous is still not a song I like. No Man`s Woman either. Dancing Lessons
has to b the worse song of her career(I mean I STILL like it, God..... but
it`s not a kick-*** song, it`s very very ordinary)

I find it`s sad to see Sinead being commercial, pop and controled. In a way,
I find her much more vulnerable now then ever.

I don`t kow how to explain this-I just feel sad when I see and hear her
now-there`s a weird feeling that tells me that what I see is not right.

HI jumpers.

As some of you may know I am the conductor of a kids tv show here in Uruguay
named "HACE LO QUE QUIERAS" ("do what you want", or something like that).
Yesterday I recorded my birthday's program (next monday 4th.) and I send the
show's DJ some of my fav. Sinead songs to be played all the time through the
show. It was great to hear her while I was working, and thinking of that
many many people who just knows NC2U, and share with them songs like "house
of the rising sun" or "chiquitita" or "streets of london" or also other
no-covers and some other from the new album. Also the excecutive productor
and my partner in the show secretly prepared some short "tapes" with regards
from my very close friends and masters. In one of those special "inserts"
through the show, one of my friend's said something like: "I know you might
prefer to see Sinead O'Connor instead of me saying "happy birthday", but
that's how things are"

Unfortunaltely I couldn't see Vicky, my girlfriend and lover
http://planeta.i.com.uy/guz/dondeestoy.htm ) because she is an actress of
another tv show in another tv channel, but is great to have her everyday
(she a new sinead addict ... fortunately... i have no chance)

anyway, i wanted to share it with you. Just it.

delete...

bye!

When I stopped into Virgin Records at Union Square the other day they were
playing the entire _Faith And Courage_ in the store.

Hi,
Thank you Viera for the inf. According to the information I got Michel
Gondry really did direct Fire On Babylon & has also done Bjork's Human
Behaviour, Army Of Me, Isobel, Hyperballad, Joga & Bachelorette.

Another parallel- Sophie Muller who directed Venus as a Boy for Björk also
directed Sinead's Chiquitita & The Emperor's New Clothes (version 2).
(I never knew that there are 2 versions?!? They say that version1 was
directed by John Maybury.)

BTW has anybody seen a documentary called "The Righteous Babes" (about
Sinead O'Connor, Ani DiFranco & Madonna...)???

Cool fella, really! I love his work with Bjork, but didn't
know he also directed FOB. Such a brilliant video, and Jake,
I ADORE Sinéad's Jeanne d'Arc section!

Hi there,

Speaking of videos lately, I decided to track down my
5 most favourite Sinéad videos. The list goes:

1 Fire On Babylon
_________________

Cleverly written, technically superb and really tell-
ing video. The drill metaphor and Jeanne d'Arc scenes
are the highlights and so is the end, where the house
burns up and flower bloom in the garden.

2 Success Has Made A Failure
____________________________

This video and the artwork to the single is what turns
the song into a chilling rebel song against child abuse
from an ordinary big band tune. Sinéad's deaf-mute sym-
bols are spine-tingling, together with the pictures of
human rights abuse victims. A glorious thing on Sinéad'
s part, to show up the courage to transform all these
things into a commercial music video.

3 Thank You For Hearing Me
__________________________

Completely sublime. Save for the part where the camera
shows the poorly-designed egg in which Sinéad's in. The
end part where she flies into the clouds is gorgeous.

4 Chiquitita
____________

Such an entertaining and light-hearted video. Makes you
want to be there to have the second cuppa. She's so
naturally beautiful and (yet again) the ending is in-
credibly wonderful, something you'd never guess - which
catches you in utter surprise and delight.

5 Famine
________

Grammy-nominated brilliant video. Sinéad is at her best
in this one, with the close shots of her beautiful face,
which is far better than NC2U. That the video is b/w and
features a sudden shot of Kurt Cobain's face are the oth-
er highlights.

The runner-up would be No Man's Woman. Which is all the
more reason to love the song, if you as ask me.

My least fave would DEFINITELY be I Want Your Hands On
Me, which is one of the funniest and most embarrassing
things I've ever seen!!

Cheers,

Deniz

Hey Jake,

>'Jealous' has a much better chance at becoming a hit than NMW,
>particularly if the video is effective. Please...no Sinead with horses, or
>floating around in fetal position inside a womb. No frog-dancing in muu
>muus, no dressing up like Joan of Arc and attacking monster machines. Just
>keep the camera on her face and let her mesmerize

What about a Springsteen's-"Philadelphia" kind of videoclip? something
inbetween the videos you don't like and the overexploited NC2U style: Sinéad
walking down a street and singing straight to the camera, so that you see
her all the time, but NO close-ups of her face. Ideal setting: a crowded
street in which everyone ignores Sinéad passing by.
Other similar videos:
The Verve's "bittersweet simphony",
Massive Attack's "unfinished simpathy",
The walking scenes in Red Hot Chili Peppers "under the bridge".

What do you think?

Eugenia.

Sometimes I put Eduard's video compilation on my vcr to see Sinead --even
though sound is awful or almost not good enough for me, but anyway, the
things is--> I try to feel Sinead closer and find the reason of each video.
Here is my little opinion of what I think it is great and awful in each
video of that compilation (it might be nice to hear what you jumpers say
about those):

1- a kind of resume of "the lion and the cobra" with Sinead images

I do not where is this video from, but it is a good idea to introduce a
whole album. Although also it is crazy, because you don' know where finish
or begins a song, there is something beautiful and with lot of coherence in
that video. Good enough.

2- Troy

Well, it is my fav song ever, so i thikn the video is not good enough. And
not just because it is ancient nowadays (thinkking on the high tech., but as
you may agree the real masterpieces do not need high technology. Images are
poor.

3- World party

funny. also the song. and Sinead dances like a robot. pretty cool.

4- Mandinka

it is nice to see Sinead in a "cold" scenography. But it is not her in that
video.

5- I want your hand son me (w/ MC Lyte)
6- Jump in the river
7- Kingdom of rain
8- Nothing compares 2 u
9- The emperor's new clothes
10- Three babies
11- You do something to me
12- My special child
13- Visions of you
14- Success has made a failure of our home
15- The making of Blood of Eden
16- Blood of Eden
17- Ship ahoy
18- Don't give up (w/ willie nelson)
19- Come talk to me
20- You made the thief of your heart
21- Fire on Babylon
22- Thank you for hearing me
23- Haunted
24- Famine
25- All apologies
26- This is to mother you
27- This Is a rebel song
28- All kinds of everything
29- Chiquitita
30- Be still
31- Release
32- No man's woman

Hi there,

Italian radio station Laisvoji Banga has Jealous at
number 4, with 167 votes. There hasn't been much
bombarding from JITR, so I think this number is truly
INCREDIBLE! I do believe in this song!

Go vote at:

Sinéad O'Connor
HER MANTLE SO GREEN
(Traditional arranged by Sinéad O’Connor)
_____________________________________________________________

As I went out walking one morning in June
To view the fair fields and the flowers in bloom
I spied a pretty fair maid, she appeared like a queen
With her costly fine robe and her mantle so green

Says I: My pretty fair maid, won’t you come with me?
We’ll both join in wed lock and married will be
I will dress you in rich attire, you’ll appear like a queen
With your costly fine robe and your mantle so green

Says she: Now, my young man I must be excused
For I’ll wed with no man, so you must be refused
To the green woods I will wonder to shun all man’s view
For the boy I love dearly, lies in famed Waterloo

Damn... 32 videos and I've only seen like a fourth of them. They only played
five of her videos on MTV and VH1. Nothing Compares, No Man's Woman, the one
with MC Lyte, Emperor's New Clothes, and This Is To Mother You. These
stations suck. This just proves how much they hate Sinead. Can someone put
these videos into computer video format and send them to me? :)

 Hi!

Well this is interesting only for people in Europe. Especially those who live in Czech Republic
or somewhere near and are able to watch CT2. Because they are going to air an interview with
Sinead on next Friday at 23.45 CET. There should be an interview and some music.

Peace
Viera

Good. It appears her European campaign has begun. Guys, will you make these
into computer audio/video files? I think we should start sharing them.

hi kids---

i saw "righteous babes" last year in san francisco and it was very good. even
with all sorts of cool rock chicks in the film, sinead was the best thing in
it. she had long hair and glassy stoner eyes and she was actually kind of
pudgy. she had all sorts of sassy things to say and my two friends agreed she
was super-solid.

i dunno if it's on video, but folks should look for it. this movie also made
me want to check out skunk anasie (spell check please, i'm not at home to
look at the cd).

peace & love---
claudia

Kris Kristofferson- actor/singer/songwriter whose movies Sinéad used enjoy
watching (in her childhood, of course...) . In one Q interview she said she
could have handled the booing fuckers at the Dylan concert had not Kris
Kristofferson walked on to give her "well-meant but chauvinistic" support.
Some time ago (before the video was shot) this guy wrote a song about her. I
think it was called Sinead My Sister or sth similar.

Hi,
I also think that showing Sinéad dressed up as Jeanne d'Arc was a great
idea. Fight back! Destroy the sucker! This video is absolutely wonderful!
I don't know what the (record-buying) public expects when it comes to her
videos. (Only close-up scenes of her face? She is stunningly beautiful, yes,
but can't they come up with some new ideas? Another video telling a
progressive story would be nice.)

You Do Sth To Me is also one of my favourites. Not because she has a wig but
'cause I love the atmosphere of that era. A stylish video.

I also love Visions Of You. She looks relaxed (& stoned). The visual part
matces the music perfectly (as in You Do...).
I can feel that video not only see... and it feels like a good trip...

> Is "Venus as a boy" the video in which Björk makes some fried eggs?
Yep.

> >BTW has anybody seen a documentary called "The Righteous Babes" (about
> >Sinead O'Connor, Ani DiFranco & Madonna...)???
> Ani and Sinéad in the same documentary?!?! Cool! Can you give any info on
it
> (who made it, when, etc)?

Some more inf about it-
http://www.weeklywire.com/ww/08-16-99/boston_music_2.html
Filmmaker Pratibha Parmar explores the popular issue of '90s women in rock
in her 1998 documentary The Righteous Babes, which takes its name from that
of Ani DiFranco's independent record label, Righteous Babe. The film, which
is screening this month at the Museum of Fine Arts, offers an overview of
the inroads feminism has made into popular music over the past decade. There
are interviews with a number of familiar women in rock -- Sinéad O'Connor,
Tori Amos, and Ani DiFranco from the new school, Chrissie Hynde from the
old -- as well as with feminist spokeswomen/theorists like Camille Paglia,
Andrea Dworkin, and Gloria Steinem.
And those are intercut nicely with video footage and snippets of songs by
Hole,
Juliana Hatfield, Garbage, and others.

"Bold, ballsy, and loud," is how one of the film's voiceovers characterizes
today's rock woman. It's a blatant reminder that it isn't always the
commodifiers doing the commodifying. But what's interesting about The
Righteous Babes isn't that the filmmaker herself so readily becomes
complicit in transforming the work of a Tori Amos or an Ani DiFranco into
what Frith called "(nonthreatening) confirmations of conventional taste" --
rather, it's the tension between what Parmar (with support from Paglia,
Dworkin, and Steinem) is trying to assert and the views that most of the
artists she interviews are attempting to express. Parmar's on a mission to
bring artists with aims as disparate as Hole's Courtney Love and Republica's
Saffron, Garbage's Shirley Manson and Skunk Anansie's Skin, together as a
genre to be known as women in rock, excluding "fake" women in pop like the
Spice Girls (even though Saffron has more in common with Posh Spice than
with Courtney Love). Meanwhile, DiFranco explains that "I haven't brought
feminism to my music consciously," and O'Connor points out that "many female
artists are reluctant to call themselves feminists." You don't get the sense
that DiFranco, O'Connor, or any of the other women in The Righteous Babes
wants to disavow feminism itself, only that they're not comfortable feeding
a system that 10 years down the road will happily reduce their work to yet
another new oldies format, one specializing in the best feminist dance hits
of the '90s.
---
If anybody is interested in buying then-
http://www.wmm.com/advscripts/ctmnfrm.asp?source=catpgfrm.asp?recid=442
is the address. I should warn you about the price, I suppose-> rental video
$90.00
VHS Sale $295.00 (It's probably meant for TV stations & film festivals)

But there is a cheaper way. I found a site-
http://www.sccs.swarthmore.edu/users/01/laurac/videos.html
(apparently owned by a Tori Amos fan) where the owner has it in the list of
her
videos (NTSC/NORTH AMERICAN FORMAT). It's written there that at the moment
she's unable to copy videos but she'll post a notice as soon as she can do
it again.
Anyway, her e-mail is
laurac@merlin.sccs.swarthmore.edu

Ani DiFranco's copied certain aspects of Sinead's singing style. In the
beginning of just like u said it would be where Sinead sings I will learn
how to sink and to swim, you can hear DiFranco's general singing style in
how Sinead sings how to sink. Just an observation.

Hi,

I just wanted to ask anyone who uses napster if they
have a live version of jump in the river or jerusalem.
I am trying to find some live performances and I
can't seem to find anything much from lion and the
cobra..so if you have any of those 2 mp3's in your
napster library, please let me know.

thanks,

lion

=====
God commanded his angels concerning you
To protect you in all your ways
They will carry you up in their arms
To keep your foot from striking a stone
You will tread upon the lion and the cobra
You will trample the great lion and serpent

I have read all the postings on these Sinead videos and I am at a loss b/c
the only videos I have ever seen are Nothing Compares 2 U, Emporer's New
Clothes, and This Is To Mother You. I feel left out. Does any one on the
list have a good quality copy of these on VHS that they would be able to dub?
I would love to be able to see them. Let me know if anyone could do this.
Thank you. -Shannon

Hi Ardeshir,

I was very reluctant to mention Ani in the list because I know that the
women-in-rock subject is spiky (anybody remember Alanis?). But I think this
moment is good to say why I think that *in a way* Ani is "superior", if
absolutely NOT a better singer, than Sinéad.

The key of Ani´s work is that it is (mostly) self-produced and (completely)
self-published. She is truly "independent" in a world where "indie music" is
just a way of saying "Oasis-Radiohead-insert name here" soundalike.

What happens when you make your own record company? first, that you don't
get rich. If you want any complicated production, you will have to learn how
to do it yourself. If you want to tour, you will probably sleep in your own
car. And so on. Luckily, after some years of pure survival Ani had luck and
started to bwcome famous. And what did she do with the money? Only one thng:
make her sound more sophisticated.
Second consequence of being your own record company: you have absolute power
and absolute control over the result. No one can tell you what you can sing
and what you can't. There are no "Dancing Lessons", no "Jealous", no "this
doesn't sound like a Sinéad album". No compromise with the record company
and no producers of Natalie Imbruglia ruining your work.

Ani is not as controversial as Sinéad, partly because her audience is
smaller, but she is a million times more brave. What would have happened if,
instead joining Atlantic, Sinéad would have created her own company or
joined a small one? Maybe there would have been no Queen Latifah show, but
then, Faith and Courage would have sound truer.

Eugenia.

I understand what you are saying about DeFranco and her music, and her
"independence," Eugenia, but I totally disagree and think it's a case of
comparing apples and oranges. I also think it's just a touch naive to
dismiss songs like "Dancing Lessons" or "Jealous" as being somehow "less
true" or sincere, artistically, than something DeFranco has produced. If
Sinead is compelled to write a lyric like "I don't deserve to be lonely,
just because you say I do," then I find that lyric to be as sincere and as
compelling as, for example, "I am thirty-two flavors and then some."
Basically, if Sinead sings it, I believe what she's singing, and there is no
more basic a criteria for genuine, successful artistry than that.
Besides, what an artist decides to write (or cover from the lyric of another
artist) is ALWAYS "true," if it springs from a genuine desire to communicate
a feeling or express the soul artistically. Sinead has always done that,
whether she's producing and singing one of her own songs, or whether she's
covering the amazing work of another artist. She has never compromised her
artistry (I don't see how anyone can make a case for that in any way at
all), and she certainly hasn't on this new, amazing record. Besides, how
wrong is it to disparage the artistry that goes into that dreaded
word..."production."???? I hate to tell you, but ALL music is eventually
"produced" to some dergree or another, even DeFranco's. If it's not a
capella being sung in your shower, then, honey, chances are it's being
PRODUCED. Wyclef jean and Dave Stewart are genuine artists for the power
they bring to producing and nurturing the vocal or lyric of another
artist...and they are highly respected, talented, valuable artists. Just
because someone sings with one acoustic guitar does not immediately signify
"better music" or "truer music" or "braver music." Sometimes, it just means
"simpler music" or "you can't find anyone who wants to jam with you."
On the issue of Sinead's artistic "bravery" and DeFranco's bravery, I
don't know where you're coming from. I'd be very careful about implying that
Sinead lacks artistic courage in any fashion. I've listened to alot of
DeFranco's music and have never found it to be truer, more compelling, more
high quality, most honest, or more genuine than Sinead's. Sinead is a
pop/rock singer. DeFranco is a folk/coffeehouse singer. Neither genre is
automatically more sincere or genuine than the other. Some pop/rock singers
are more artistic and sincere than some coffeehouse singers. Some
coffeehouse singers are more artistic than some pop/rock singers. Simple as
that. And, in this world, it's hard to criticize any artist who wants to
find representation to promote and distribute their work to the largest
number of people possible. That's a wise decision on the part of any artist,
for promotion is not necessarily a 'fun" thing to do (believe me) and the
more someone else can take that burden from your shoulders, the more time
your artist has to write, write, write and sing, sing, sing...and
experience. If DeFranco wants to sleep in a car and travel on her tours,
then that's her business. I don't necessarily think it makes her more
courageous or artistic. Believe me, rodeo clowns travel by car from gig to
gig, too (not that I'm comparing Ani and rodeo clowns!). Just because
DeFranco has chosen to take the tough route doesn't make her better. It just
means that she's got it tougher, like a lot of unsigned artists. Frankly, I
think she should give herself a break and find a label that WILL allow her
to have complete artistic control. There are labels like that out there,
believe me. She should shop around again...if she wants.
So you see, it's apples and oranges. I give DeFranco credit for working
so hard to build her following, but the fact remains that there are many
people who are not surprised she does not have a major record deal...there
are many who believe she's just a hard-working amateur. Others swear by her.
Go figure! I tend to fall in the middle. I think she's got alot of talent,
but I don't think there's that much to distinguish her from hordes of other
coffeehouse artists I see at the local java joint from time to time. I do
believe she's far more industrious than most coffeehouse artists, that's for
sure. But that just makes her more diligent, not necessarily more talented
or "artistic."
Hopefully, I got my point across about the silliness of calling one
artist truer than another because of greater or lesser production values or
bigger record deals or lesser ones, tv gigs or coffeehouse gigs, etc. I hope
I made it somewhat clear that coffeehouse stars are not necesssarily more
brave or genuine than pop stars, or vice versa. Indeed, some coffeehouse
stars end up as pop stars, and some pop stars go back to being coffeehouse
stars. It's the cruel working of the universe, huh? The only time an artist
is lousy is when they clearly have no appreciable talent or skill at all, or
when they sing without sincerity of soul or experience of soul. Neither
Sinead nor DeFranco could be accused of those things in any significant
fashion. That we can certainly agree upon.

jah Wobbles but He Don't fall Down...

Jake

I believe Sinéad is tough and experienced enough not to
let other people interfere with her music in a direction
which she does not support. Take a song like I Want Your
Hands On Me, which is produced by Sinéad and from an
album conservative fans are very fond of. Now tell me if
there is any difference between that 80's funky disco
pastiche and Dancing Lessons, an elegant hip-hop flavoured
pop song which finds Sinéad in great vocal performance.

Sinéad has always been open to collaborations and I think
this is what has made her music exctining for 13 years.
She does possess such a great talent that, with each new
collaborator, she discovers a new and untouched dimension.

Deniz

Q: Does it worry you to see big corporations like SFX taking over so much of
the concert business.

A: Totally. But it's just part and parcel of the whole corporate
encroachment on every aspect of our lives. I mean, it's hard to hear music
or eat food or buy anything that's not brought to you by some enormous
multinational entity.

Q: From a philosophical point of view that can be pretty discouraging, but
is it also starting to affect the way you do business from a practical
perspective?

A: It's always been a problem. But it's just one of many. And it's a battle
that's well worth fighting. Fortunately, it's something that the folks at
Righteous Babe and my booking agent take care of. I just tend to show up and
play when they tell me to play.

Q: But Righteous Babe is your deal?

A: It is. I'm there when I'm not on the road, which is pretty rarely. And
I'm there in terms of a lot of the major decisions. And of course I make the
records and I started the thing. But the other half of Righteous Babe is
Scot Fisher, my manager, and he does the day-to-day work. It's his evil
genius that's made it all happen on that end. He's a very political person.
He sets the tone for how we do business.

Q: Have business responsibilities ever distracted you from making music?

A: It's totally distracting. It eats my head. Reinventing the wheel for
yourself in order to just drive yourself around is a lot of work. But it's a
really good feeling not to have to compromise yourself politically or
ideologically in the ways that I would have to if I was going to play the
corporate game. And being my own boss is very important to me because there
are certain things I don't like to do. I don't do in-stores, and I don't go
to radio stations to promote my records. And I don't do a lot of interviews
these days, because I have limited time and energy and I'd rather being
making art.

Q: You'd already established yourself before the Internet became an issue,
but don't you think it would have been a useful tool when you were just
starting out?

A: This is going to sound goofy, but I honestly think that even if the
technology had been there, I wouldn't have been interested. Because my focus
was never on selling my records. Back when I had no money and I made my
first little tape on cassette because I couldn't afford a CD, I was just
focused on playing music for people and getting gigs. That's where all my
inspiration came from. I would sell my tapes in bars, but I didn't give any
thought to things like distribution for years. And even when it came time to
deal with that stuff, I was so uninterested that I let my manager handle it.
I just want to be able to get in my car, go to a room somewhere, and
interact with the people I'm playing for.

Plus, there's the beauty of going to an independent record store where
there's a real person behind the counter who might actually run the joint.
Then you have human interaction, communication about art, networking, and
all of those things that are so important. Because I think of art as a
social act, not really a product.

Q: In other words, you don't have to focus on the business side of things in
order to succeed.

A: Absolutely. I think there must be a way to have a job and make a living
through art without becoming commercially
focused. If there isn't, then just fucking shoot us all now.

Hi Eugenia,

It's good that we talk about spiky subjects.

Maybe in the beginning Sinead was more naive that Ani, but Sinead's strategy
was for a certain time just as effective as Ani's. Sinead was the
infiltrating saboteur working from the inside while Ani is the jungle
guerrilla freedom fighter raising her army independently and taking their
power from the outside. Both strategies can be just as successful. But then
again, Sinead's strategy only works in the beginning when they don't know
who you really are. So you really only have a short time period to do your
job. I think that time for Sinead was in the beginning and she can't use
them like that anymore. So yes, I do think she should make her way to Ani's
side eventually. That's what it comes down to and that is the culture I was
advocating when I first joined this list.

I don't think Sinead is less brave because she's been working to achieve the
same goals. Just not in the same way. You can say she took a shortcut.

Yes I'm sad that Sinead has had to comprimise but that doesn't mean the
music on her albumns is the only music she writes. I think this isn't that
big of a loss because of that. She can always put her own music out later
when she wants. She also took a lot of abuse for how she approached this and
that makes me sad too.

Of course I'm not against business, for those of you who might think that or
might want to argue that against me, because trade is a natural part of life
and it's good, there's nothing wrong with it. Business is not the problem.
The problem is domination and exploitation.

I don't know agree that you can't be rich running your own record company. I
mean, all record companies are somebody's own record company.

Ardeshir

People magazine (Rob Lowe on cover). This is from the Queen Latifah show, of
course.

Jah me dears...
Dropped in again to say a few farewell words...

Deniz... will you marry me?

cenon... you`re a genius. Small pleasures,
                           simple joys
                          weave lovely patterns
                           of contentment
                             in our lives.

Ardeshir... thanks for the boots and your loving friendship

Roman... Meine Gedichte scheinen ja so richtig eingeschlagen zu haben...der
Mann straft mich mit Ignoranz... Dennoch hab ich dich sehr lieb und ich meld
mich mal von der grünen Insel

Amy... I will practise my Irish!!! I am glad I meet your loving soul.

Jakey... I hope you enjoyed your meeting with our Lady..and I hope you won`t
forget to visit me in Dub!
