Hello all.

First: On the soundtrack The Matchmaker, I heard haunted by Shane McGowen
and Sinead O'Connor.
Can someone tell me more about this song?

Second:
Marcel did you get it yet? :oP

Someone just let me borrow Prince's The Hits 1, which includes "Nothing
Compares 2 U." Obviously it's done nowhere as well as Sinéad did it,
but it is interesting. The liner notes are also interesting:

"Relieved of the pressure that comes with following a benchmark like
PURPLE RAIN, the air around Prince's home base was getting decidedly
lighter. Sure The Time had dissolved, but from the ashes grew The
Family, a highly distinctive band built around the unlikely combination
of two singers, a saxophonist, The Time's drummer, a funky rhythm
guitarist and a comic foil. It was also built around terrific music,
including NOTHING COMPARES 2 U. The magnificent ballad didn't rate a
single for the funk-driven Family but was simply too good to die away.
When Sinead O'Connor took NOTHING COMPARES 2 U to the top of the charts
in 1988, Prince was damn near obliged to perform it himself. Recorded
during an invitation-only Paisley Park bash, this new interpretation
features the delightful Rosie Gaines and the New Power Generation, while
leaving no doubt whose song it is."

I thought that last phrase sounded a bit snide (not really, but just a
tiny little bit), but as far as I'm concerned (and Sinéad also,
considering that she doesn't sing it anymore), he can have his song
back!! We all know that Sinéad turns every song she does into a literal
miracle. It wasn't that song that was so amazing--it was what Sinéad
did to it. I would say the same thing about her version of Elton John's
"Sacrifice," which is nothing short of utterly breathtaking.
Incidentally, right now I'm listening to her version of Pink Floyd's
"Mother," which Roman just added to his homepage (thanks, Roman!). I
really like that song no matter who sings it, but HER singing it makes
it SO much better! Anyway, I'm not trying to offend any Prince fans; I
just wanted to say that NOTHING COMPARES 2 SINEAD!!!! (That was on the
cover of Rolling Stone a few years ago, and it's very true.) I'm so
glad I have this list, with people who actually understand where I'm
coming from when I say things like this. Thanks!

  Ben

I am afraid the song title itself escapes me now. It may be "haunted by the
ghost"
anyway it was on an album called "the Snake" By Shane McGowen and the Popes.
It was released about two years ago I think. It is a very good record.
Although, in my opinion not as good as some of the Pogues stuff when Shane was
in the band like
"If I should Fall From The Grace of God". If you do not know Shane McGowens
Music Check it out. He is sort of an Irish Tom Waits.

i'm pretty sure it was just called "Haunted." While I love Shane's voice,
I think that the Pogues are better than his solo stuff just because they
are an outstanding bunch of musicians. For a weird vocal collaboration,
check out Nick Cave's Murder Ballads--the song "death is not the end"
features Shane and also Kylie Minogue...it's pretty neat. I have to say
though, I never much liked the Sinead/Shane collaboration just because her
voice is so sweet and his is so gravelly, but it was nice to hear her
contributing to someone else's album!!! And I vote for checking out Rum
Sodomy and the Lash as a good sampling of the Pogues!!!

i think that the voices in "haunted" are kind of the beauty and the
beast. ;-) sinead's voice is extremly clear and nice and shane's voice
is (as always) the complete opposite. the rest of the album is also
great if you liked the pogues. as a good pogues album i'd recommend "red
roses for me".

if you're searching for a good shane macgowan and nick cave songs there
is a single where they're doing "what a wonderful world" as a duet.
they're both sounding soooo drunken. :)

First, I wondered if The Captive was a big hit movie and I just didn't
know about it. Because a customer at work (I was playing So Far...)
identified Heroine as being from a movie, but he couldn't remember the
name. I said "The Captive" and he said "that's right, that's a great
soundtrack." I'd always thought Heroine was an obscure song from an
obscure movie. This guy wasn't even a Sinead fan, he just recognized the
song from the film. I thought that was strange.

As for Haunted, I was first acquainted with it from the soundtrack to the
Sandra Bullock flop Two if By Sea. I've never seen the shitty movie, but
I got the cd for $5. I actually like that song, but don't enjoy listening
to it because MacGowan's voice pains my ears. And the lyrics are much
lamer than anything she would have written herself, all cliche's:

"you've got a way of talking, you've got a way of walking"

Kevin

"I thought I tasted of too many cigarettes,
But you tasted of wine"

hello folks, :)

some interesting news:

I had ordered "Sinead, her life and Music" at the local bookstore. For some
reason its inaccessible in Canada. So, I asked to order "Sinead: So
Different." The service-lady said that all that was listed was a new book
about Sinead coming out next year. So, keep yer eyes peeled folks.

Hmm, its quite too late for some clever person to make a quick buck
capitalizing on Sinead's fame, cuz well, Sinead's no longer popular.
So, maybe, hopefully, it'll be a nice tribute to the wonderful artist
Sinead.

I hope its by Ann Powers, who wrote that wonderful Trouble Girls article
'bout Sinead (which is still available on me sinead page btw for those who
haven't read it yet ((its good!))) I kinda doubt it though.

anyhow, later all,

bilal

Hello all,

I received the book Sinead:So Different a couple weeks ago.
It is truly a bible of her!

I got it on a post here, but they said they only had one copy left and I got
it. I'll be more than happy to share things about it...

Example: John Reynolds and Sinead got secretly married after having their
baby.

Just little things. Ya'll know most of the rest.

Love, Peace, and Harmony, and thank you for all the posts on haunted.

Hi Everyone!

FYI.....There is a small article in this month's SPIN about Sinead's new
record deal. Apparantly, Altantic won the bid (no less than $8 million!) and
will be promoting her much more aggresively than EMI (thank goodness). Also,
if you read the first letter in the 'Going Postal' section on page 27, that's
me :)

Peace.

Hi Everyone,

I was watching a special on Radiohead a few nights ago and they played
the video 'Lucky' which is a song found on the 'Help' Cd with Sinead's
song 'Ode to Billy Joe'. Anyway, near the end of the video they show a
bunch of clips of other artists in the recording studio for the CD and
they show a short clip (don't blink) of our sweetie. She's wearing the
same smile she had on the back cover of 'Universal Mother'. What a
cutie! :-)
Bye!

Hello,

New Album; Ghostland - Ghostland
Ghostland is a collaboration between three working musicians from three
different musical disciplines all three are in Sinead's Band;

Caroline Dale, cellist, has worked with The London Chamber Orchestra, The
Balanescu Quartet, Nigel Kennedy, Oasis, and played the solo cello that
Alan Rickman was seen to perform as a ghost in 'Truly, Madly, Deeply'.

John Reynolds, drummer and producer, co-wrote and co-produced Sinead
O'Connor's Universal Mother album, and has worked with Jah Wobble and
Natacha Atlas. The Ghostland album was recorded in his home.
(This John is Sinead's Ex-husband, he wrote a whole lot more for Sinead,
and is her longest band member ;-))

Justin Adams, guitarist, also worked with Jah Wobble's Invaders of the
Heart, co-writing three ground-breaking albums. He grew up in Jordan and
Egypt, and these North African influences can be heard in Adams innovative
playing, which veers from muezzin wails to delta slides.

The Ghostland album will be released on East West records early this year.
Watch out for live appearances which are definitely not to be missed.

In the meantime this Album has been released already!!

Hello,

I am looking for scans of as much as possible sleeves in full color or RGB.
If you have any please let me know (don't have a scanner myself). The scans
doesn't have to be big. 1"x1" will do. They're to be used in the
discography, so please don't add extra info in/on the scans.
I assume they won't be much bigger then 50kB each.
Just the front sleeves are needed, not only of her albums and singles but
also of the vinyl, 12", tapes, guest appearances etc etc............
So if you have a scanner and are willing to take the time, lemme know which
ones you can make or already have and I''ll let you know which ones I am
still missing of them. At the moment I don't have any...

hi the pple of jitr,

there's a short sidebar story on the video for "nothing compares 2 u" in
the videos column (pg 148) in the july issue of Q magazine. here's the
text:

Pause: Great Moments in Pop Video

Nothing Compares 2 U: Sinead cries real tears.

When John Maybury began filming Nothing Compares 2 U in December 1989, his
intention was to use footage of Sinead O'Connor in the Parisian Pere
Lachaise cemetery and a close-up of her performance. Whilst recording the
vocals, however, O'Connor, upset by a recent split with a boyfriend, was
moved to tears. "We talked about the performance being really emotional but
we hadn't planned for Sinead to cry," says Maybury. Apart from Maybury, a
hairdresser and a stylist, the film crew were all-female." It helped create
an atmosphere which Sinead could work in," adds Maybury. O'Connor blubbed
throughout 13 takes. "Two of which were perfect. The video is made from the
first half of one and the second half of another. Any one of the takes
would have been usable, they were all strong." -- Rob Leggatt.

that's all, folks.

kai chai.

ps. burning question: why would they need a hairdresser for sinead who was
almost bald?! it must be really easy money for her (the hairdresser, i
mean!)!

Hi
"Mandinka", "I Want Your (Hands On Me)", "The Emperor's New Clothes",
"NC2U", "Three Babies", "My Special Child", "This Is To Mother You" all
charted - I guess it depends on how a "hit" is defined. "Jump In The
River", "Fire On Babylon", "Famine" and "This IS A Rebel Song" didn't
chart for the simple reason that they didn't get airplay. I am, of
course, speaking for the UK only here.

Sorry to bug you all once again, but I was left in charge (don't ask why!)
of the plot to meet other JITR members at Fleadh on June 13, and I haven't
received a lot of feedback, so...

I guess I'll just propose to see you all there at 4:00pm (random time).
I'll be wearing my old Sinead shirt (black, with her face in white).
Where? I don't know. Let's say, if you're headed into the stadium,
you'll pass a fence on your right, behind which is the press/backstage
area, and I'll be along that fence. That's not very particular, but I'm
doing my best from memory. 4pm, Sinead shirt. I'm Kevin. If anyone has
any better ideas, please email me kak2395@is4.nyu.edu, or give me a call
or something (212) 533-8216.

Maybe I'll see some of you there!?

Kevin

This doesn't upset me... The reason it doesn't is because we all know and
love Sinead and her work. This is just one mans opinion. And we all know
what that means. How many times have I heard critics say "The Color Purple"
was on of the best movies ever made. Well, I thought it sucked!? Some
critics say "Halloween" sucked (the first one), I was scared and it was
thrilling to see it! Thumbs up. So I never take what they have to say.
Plus, look how many artists have taken off for awhile and come back, a lot!
The best!
Please don't let this get to you. The critic is paid to be that way, if he
wants to say that, let him. We can disagree.

Thank you for hearing me,
Love, Peace, and Harmony,
Holli

This is totally denied by MTV. RE: breakup
I heard:
Sinead has herself stated that she was alone with the camera man only in the
room. She thought about her mothers death.

All these little notes...
Peace to all of you,
Holli

PS: Does anyone else wish Sinead could just get on here and answer all these
questions/rumors?

hi the pple of jitr,

there's a short sidebar story on the video for "nothing compares 2 u" in
the videos column (pg 148) in the july issue of Q magazine. here's the

Any one of the takes
would have been usable, they were all strong." -- Rob Leggatt.

that's all, folks.

kai chai.

ps. burning question: why would they need a hairdresser for sinead who was
almost bald?! it must be really easy money for her (the hairdresser, i
mean!)!

While Kyrie is still waiting to hear Sinead at the club, I thought I would
mention that they used to play her at this club (now closed) called Einstein-
A-Go-Go at Jacksonville Beach. I Am Stretched On Your Grave & The Emperor's
New Clothes were played most often, It was an all-ages dance club and they
played the best music! I miss it. That's all

Hi gang,

I was inspired this morning driving to work to call in to the local NPR
affiliate here in the SF bay area when they asked to compile a list of the
person you'd most like to have dinner with. Many were suggested, like the
Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela and various sports and political figures.

I got on the air and suggested Sinead, mainly because she is the most
radically spiritual woman in the entertainment media since Diane Varsi. I
touted her Universal Mother CD, especially the tracks of her lullaby and her
son's little song as being so artistically superior to almost anything in
the media for decades if not centuries.

My mother sang lullabyes and I want to say that they have way more cultural
and organic significance than almost any other song form. Hurrah for Sinead!

Oh yeah, and the moderator said that Sinead would be in the area soon and
that he hoped to have her on his program.

I forgot about this and the day went by and two friends called to tell me
that they had heard the exchange.

When I talked with Sinead, she did not know of the list. She kinda laughed
when I said "jitr", well one of her cute, humble smiles.

I've heard she doesn't care to do these sort of things much.

In Solidarity,
Holli

Do you have a problem with Sinead because she is somebody, making a
statement?
She has come from being abused to a survivor of abuse. Do you have a problem
with that? If so, I can start with you, it's people like you that continue
to allow silence in the homes of abuse, you throw to the wind what she is
saying, without realizing that it's very important and not out of "group
therapy sessions".

You speak of things you do not know.
I don't appreciate your ignorance.
You need to open up your eyes, you can't see. I'm emailing this to JITR,
maybe someone else can give you what you need.
You won't find it here. After that, get a real job! Loser

Sinead O'Connor once stood as the very definition of "strong woman." Known
for her brilliant melodies and wonderful, spiteful lyrics, she was shocking,
political and powerful. What happened?
1995's Universal Mother completed a gradual 360 degree turnaround in her
behavior. The album was the complete antithesis of her previous work. Aside
from "Fire on Babylon", it was sickeningly passive and diseased by boring
music.
Gospel Oak one-ups Universal Mother in both positive and negative ways. On
the positive side, the melodies on the record are clearly more thought-out.
No more endless, repetitive, acoustic drone. Unfortunately, it's still more
passive than Mother, with lyrics straight out of support group sessions. ("I
am enough for myself / I don't need anything else.") Now a seemingly
untalented artist, O'Connor shows only wounds healed by therapy and no sign
of battle scars.

Okay, maybe I was a little harsh, but it is sooooo very frustrating when you
are a survivor and someone doesn't know/understand or care to for that
matter, where you are coming from.

Maybe age will bless you with enlightenment.?
I mean that sincerely,

hi the pple of jitr,

there's a new album by jestofunk, apparently a famous dj trio from italy,
which happens to be called -- surprise, UNIVERSAL MOTHER! their music has
been described as constituting "funky grooves of both soul and funk, with
some experimental sounds generated for the dancefloor." apparently, this
new album, Universal Mother, is a collaboration project of jocelyn brown
and reggae legend, freddy mcgregor.

doesn't sound the kind of stuff i think the jitr folks like, but i wonder
whether they were inspired by sinead's album of the same name....

kai chai.

Well said, Holli!!! Universal Mother passive? hmmm, "Red Football,"
"Famine," maybe I misinterpreted them, but I could never call those
passive songs...No signs of battle scars? What about "A perfect Indian"
or "Scorn Not His Simplicity?"
As far as her music being "straight out of group therapy," I personally
felt that "I am enough for myself" to be one of the strongest statements a
woman could make. And that enlightenment comes from self-reflection, not
therapy. Sorry if you find it upsetting that Sinead has grown as a person
and a survivor since her early days, but for other survivors, it comes as
a sign of hope. She hasn't lost one ounce of her passion, it's just
redirected.

just make an offer if you are interested. If you want to see scans of the

Subject:	Re: Review on Sinead O'Connor

She hasn't lost one ounce of her passion, it's just
redirected.

Two words, my brother.
First is "check-and-delete". (Okay, that's actually three...)
Second is "digest", as in jitr-digest, which is what I believe I will go back to! (Not because of you, Holli, but because this list is picking up again and I'm on several other mid-to-high volume lists.)
Please, enough asshole fights. This list is comparatively free of them--can we keep it that way?

I'm hoping someone more articulate will be reviewing the Fleadh
(Mandy ? ) but as no-one has done so yet I'll just give you my rough
view of the show for the time being.

In spite of the weather forecasts it had been a beautiful sunny day in
London's Finsbury Park. There were two stages, the main one and the
smaller Time Out stage which was in a large open sided tent. At first I
thought it was a bit of a shame that Sinead was on the small stage but
in the end I think it was better because there were so many people
coming and going all the time at the main stage.

By the time Sinead was due on stage the tent was crammed full of people
with more standing on the outer edges. The show was due to start at 9-45
but the time came and went. Finally, about twenty five minutes late she
came onstage to a rapturous welcome looking much more like the Sinead of
old with her shaved head and not in the least bit fat. She launched
into Emperors New Clothes but there seemed to be a lot of feedback on
the stage though she didn't look too bothered by it. Next came Thief of
Your Heart in which she introduced flute player Davey Spillane onto the
stage. Stretched on Your Grave proved we were into well worn territory
and it began to look like we were going to get a re-run of the previous
year's set. Then out of the blue she hit us with Jackie, a song not
heard for many a year.

After this she introduced us to her new guitar of which she seemed very
proud and played This Is a Rebel Song on her own. It was a nice
departure from recent years to see her with a guitar again. Next was a
new song which I can't remember the name of, a very haunting song in
which the flute and Sinead's voice interweaved and followed each other
accompanied by acoustic guitar, bass and soft strings.

After this was a song that started with flute and acoustic guitar. When
she sang the first words, " It's been seven hours.." the place erupted.
What followed was more like a choir than a gig by a solo artist as
almost everyone in the place sang along to Nothing Compares 2 You. I
wouldn't be surprised if James on the main stage couldn't hear
themselves over the joyous crowd in the Time Out tent. It was one of
those occasional moments which send a shiver down your spine to hear an
artist sing their most famous song and realise how deeply it has
ingrained itself into popular culture. Thousands of people who must
have sung along to this song in their bedrooms, in the bath, in the car
reaching back to a common moment in their past and reliving it with the
woman who imprinted it on their minds.

This seemed to have thrown Sinead and her band off course a little and
she launched into In This Heart which seemed a bit perfunctory ( and
some of the backing vocals were pretty dire ). Next she did Fire on
Babylon which was amazing. I've heard it a couple of times before and
I've never heard her sing it this well. When she sang FIRE! at the end
it was like she was calling for the entire London Fire Brigade. Whoever
the song was aimed at ( her mother ? I've often wondered about that)
must have heard wherever they were.

She ended the set with Last Day of Our Acquaintance as usual and left
the stage never to return ( although I think there was a curfew at the
Fleadh because it is in a residential area). It all seemed like it was
over very quickly ( it was a very short set ) but I felt it distilled
the essence of Sinead really well. There were other songs she could
have done but it just seemed really well balanced. If I had just come
along to see Sinead I might have been a little disappointed ( although I
was, because World Party's set was cut very short by technical problems)
but in the context of a festival and at the end of a long day I thought
it was O.K.( although I had other things on my mind by this time) She
sang really w
