Hello,

Being a Prince fan for over 13 years, collecting all his stuff (100s of
cd's) and more extreme as my Sinead collection, knowing every word he
sings, I totally missed this Prince quote in an 3 years old song concerning
Prince's rumoured sexual attack on Sinead being the reason for Sinead not
to sing Nothing Compares 2 U anymore;

In one of his songs (to be exact; one of his 100s unreleased songs)
entitled "Days of Wild" Prince sings;

...A woman every day should be thanked
Not disrespected, not raped or spanked
And if a woman ever said I did-
She's a motherfuckin liar, and I'm a set-up kid...

The mail server for postmodern.com has been having some serious
hardware problems, and has crashed 3 times already today. It looks
like either memory or motherboard problems. I am going to try to
run some diagnostics and decide whether it can be fixed or will need
to be replaced.

In either case, please be warned that list service is likely to be
irregular for the next few days until this is resolved. My apologies
for the annoyance.

BTW, this machine also serves as the Web server www.postmodern.com, so
archive and Web service will also be affected.

I'll post updates when possible.

Regards,

I thought I heard on NPR this morning that Sinead was planning a
collaboration with Jonathon Richman! It was early, so I may have been
dreaming. Has anyone else any such news?

Well, this is the first time that I post anything on this list. I
figured nobody posted anything about her being on MuchMusic so I thought
I`d let you know how it was. Well, it was great! It lasted an hour in
which she sang several songs (I`ll post a set-list tomorrow, this computer
lab is closing in 10 minutes) and Sook Yin-Lee interviewed her for about
10-15 minutes. I have to go now so I`ll let you all know more tomorrow
(I`m going to watch it again- I taped it!).

geez-with all the social rhetoric flying around lately-I'm exhausted.
I remember reading an article on someone's page where sinead referred
   to a
song she did with another artist or group as being her best work. Maybe I'm
just being lazy, but can anyone well-versed in these things rush to my aid
and tell me which song and artist she was talking about?

hello all,

I just put up some simple pictures on my sinead home page. You may want
to check them out. Personally I only like a few of them a lot. However
the ones that didn't look so great on my screen may look better
on your monitors, so I put them up anyways.

The URL is:

http://callisto.uwinnipeg.ca/~brana/sinead.htm

I like the images numbered: 5,6,7,10 and 11.

I'd like to know what you think.

By the way, some of them look good printed on a laser printer.

Later,

Bilal

I haven't heard any of the extended versions of "Fire" esp. the 13 min.
one, does sinead add this into it or any remixes?

As the one who recorded the Providence boot - and having a pretty good
memory - I'd have to agree that (at least in the Prov. show) she is
singing something like "Jehovah". It's certainly creative enunciation
she's using, but I'm sure it isn't simply "Jah!" Of course, "Yahweh" is
also a possibilty. Hmm... It's a mystery!

Hello Elijah,

That is an interesting question. No. I have no such authorization.
Should anyone whose drawings or pictures I used take offense please notify
me and I will gladly remove those pictures. I never really thought it
would be a concern - authorization that is.

As you have noticed, list service from here has been intermittent over the
last two days. The server machine appears not to be able to stay up more than
anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours -- if I am here I can just push the
reset button and reboot it, but if I'm not it has to wait until I return.

I have made arrangements for it to go to the repair shop on Monday; they claim
they can diagnose/fix it in 24 hours or so; unfortunately postmodern.com will
be off the air most of Monday and possibly most of Tuesday. I believe the
nightly backups are working so there should be no data or archive lossage.
If the machine is not economically repairable I'll just replace it, which is
not that big a deal, but there will be configuration and setup time.

I'll post updates when I can. When postmodern.com is off the air I can be
reached at mcb@greatcircle.com .

Regards to all,

Hello,

On a BBC2-special about Shane MacGowan (The Great Hunger - The Life and
songs of Shane MacGowan) yesterday evening Sinead sung a new song which
I've never heard before. It's a song written by Shane and the tv-special is
probably recorded in 1996 early 1997. The song is totally a-capella by
Sinead only.

This song is available as a Real Audio File through my homepage.
Directly accessable through the mainpage !! (For The News Song Click Here...)

On the same place where you could find the U2 songs, of which the released
version will be deleted now. (The demo will remain till a new song will be
added) In the future all new songs will be added like this.

Oh By The Way; The title of the new song is simply "SONG WITH NO NAME"

HINT; If you wanna save the song to your hard-disk just click on it with
your RIGHT mouse button and choose "save link as..."

Hello,

I'd like to thank Michael C. Berch publically for what he's doing for us by
making this mailing list possible. Esspecially now when there are some
problems with the hard/software.
I doubt wether this list would excist if it wasn't for him !!!
It would probably be a newsgroup then, filled with "Make Money Fast"
junkmail/bulkmail.

THANX !!

Hello,

it's a great song that shane has written after he split up with the pouges
and it was realeased in 1994 on his album "the snake" where you can also
find this duet with sinead called "haunted".

thanks to marcel for making it available via the net. i listend to it and
it's a nice version of sinead but, though some of you might consider it as
blasphemy, i prefer shane's original. ;-)

here are the lyrics:

The Song With No Name
(written by Shane MacGowan)

nine years ago i fell in love
with a lady proud and fair
so passionate were she and i
we made fire in the air
i loved her more than life itself
she loved me just the same
and it broke my heart
to think we'd part
if she ended the affair

but i was brutal, i was ignorant, i was cruel, i was brash
i never gave a damn about the beauty that i smashed
no sadist i, i found delight in making love and cry
now i'd pray for a single kiss from her
to be lashed and crucified

and now i fear this lady fair
can never more be mine
long gone are nights in my lonely bed
all suffering and crying
and thought i fear that through this life
she'll call me only friend
'til i'm dead and buried in my grave my love will never end

ciao

Hi Roman!! THanks for the lyrics... I was starting to write them down
when I got your e-mail... Just a small correction:

I suspect it is "I pray" but I'm not sure...

I guess it's "though"

Thanks again!!! And thanks to Mars for letting this available to us!

Hello all,

I too would like to extend my thanks to Michael for maintaining jitr. In
truth, I really have not read many of messages this month ( I found the
Diana/Socialism thing pretty boring and haven't *even* had time to read
some of that pope stuff). Nonetheless, I know that I like jitr dialogue
(or should I say polylogue) and usually leave my terminal with a smile
(especially when we're talking about lyrics). And so, thanx Michael.

Hi all,
I rarely get a chance to post, but always keep up to date on everything
through JITR. I heard about the re-airing of GOSPEL ACCORDING TO SINEAD a
week or two ago and was so happy! The first time it aired I missed it, but
this time my sister came through! I don't get a chance to watch TV that
often; however, my younger sister is a TV buff and invested in a sattelite
dish. She taped it for me and it arrived today.....great show, great
interview and a couple of surprises. I didn't realize there was a video for
"This is to Mother You" and even more of a surprise was that they played the
vid for "Mandinka" at the end of the show! The TV appearance was much like
the show I saw in Detroit for the Gospel Oak tour and I was incredibly happy
to see the person interviewing her was prepared and had meaningful questions
to ask :) She changed the set to include "Redemption Song" at the last
minute...a definite high point in the show for me!
The day the show aired, my sister and I were talking by phone and she
was checking to see if the vid was complete and after rewinding the entire
show, the video for "Troy" played on Much Music. She mentioned it to me and
unfortunately the GOSPEL show had been rewound to the beginning......no way
to tape it!! I have a clip from this video on an old tape but would really
love to get a good copy of it. Did anyone else see this show and notice if
any other videos were played. I have a ton of TV appearances, videos, etc.
to trade (US format only) and am interested in the TROY vid and anything else
I might be mssing. If you want to trade, please contact me privately.

Thanks for listening :)
Lynn

Hi everyone,

I've been in JITR since a long time, but this is the first time i write.
Well, i dunno if anyone ever talked about it, but there's two songs
featuring Sin=E9ad O'Connor on the latest 1996 Richard Wright's cd (He is a
member of Pink Floyd). There's one, called "Breakthrough" that she sings
alone and another one, "Reaching for the Rail" that she sings with Richard
Wright, but these songs are very something, althought Sin=E9ad O'connor's
voice is different. I dunno why she worked with him, but i do think that
this participation is better than the "I'm not your baby" duet with Bono.
By the way, i'm from Quebec city, Canada(so sorry for my english, i'm
french) and, the greatest hits Sin=E9ad O'Connor's cd "The best so far" is
supposed to be out tuesday october 7th. I cant be sure of this, but i've
read in JITR that it would be out on october 21th or maybe later, so i'll
let u know. Oh, and, if everyone else is from my area, the PBS tv program
Sessions at 54th street with Sin=E9ad will be on tv next saturday, october
11th. Well, Richard Wright's cd is called Broken China. Bye =3D)

I'm a little late on the ball with this question.

I heard Sinead on tape for 2 years before I knew what she looked like.
I don't find personally that I care if someone is good looking or not in
relation to their singing. They could be ugly to me personally and have a
beautiful voice and I'll buy and listen to them. The outside is not as
important to me as the message, the inner beauty.

Maybe a little off; I saw Black Holes on the discover channel, it was about
black holes. I saw this guy with Cerebal Palsy in a wheelchair all crooked
and disfigured. He could not talk without the aid of his computerized
typewriter, he could not move at all. He wrote a book about Einsteins
theories and changed the way gravity was perceived. This is complex, but
his outside crippled and distorted, his inside, genius and beautiful!

Okay, point made.

Thanks Amy, I still make it a point to make conversation every once and
awhile.

So, is Sinead forgiven by the pope? Has he said anything? I'm interested
in knowing since I am a recovering catholic also.... :o)

You Wrote:
I just came back from my holidays and heard about these things.
This is really disappointing to me! Not only her music is getting more and
more superficial (or as she might put it: "happy") but also her opinion
on how the world is! Why not let us all be happy and forget about the pain
and grief the church brought on us, and particularly on Ireland - because
Sinead feels so good - how ridiculous!

Henry

Response:
I'm having trouble understanding what you mean, I'm not sure if it is
sarcastic or not... Please clarify.
My own take on the situation of apologizing to the Pope. I understood from
the beginning that it wasn't a personal attack on the Pope, just the
religious ramifications of abuse in society.
I don't think Sinead needed to apologize to the Pope, but she felt she
needed to, so live and let live.
If you can move on to a better space from the past, that's wonderful. I
would still be miserable if I couldn't learn and grow, have knowledge and
understanding.
The catholism in my life has been a deafning roar. I am working on trying
to understand how it all effected me. But I am growing and moving on.
Sinead I believe, is growing and moving on.
What do they say; Acknowledge the pain, feel it, and move through it.

Sorry for the rant.

First, thanks to all those who sent their thanks and encouragement!
I really appreciate it, and hope to be able to devote more time and
energy to the list in the future, including better archives, etc.

The current situation is as follows: I had been scheduled to disconnect
server.postmodern.com from the Net yesterday to take it to the repair
shop, which would have meant being off the Net for at least 2 days, but
my friend and colleague Brent Chapman (he's the guy that wrote Majordomo,
among other things) lent me a spare machine with a similar configuration
and we did a disk swap, so I can take the server to the shop without
being off the Net. This is an immense help. I will either have the
server repaired or upgraded (new motherboard) depending on what's
wrong with it.

In the meantime there *should* be no interruption to list, archive, or web
service, but there will be some short downtime when we swap machines again.

I'll keep you all posted.

Regards to all,

(also, is that an original or a cover song? who sang it first?)

I haven't heard her officially apologising but if so, of course he
forgave! He forgave the guy who tried to kill him and visited him in
prision..... Afterall, if we are catholics, the big lesson is to
forgive.... and he's the shepherd of the catholics!
BTW, you all who say bad things about him would definetly change your
minds if you had been here in Brazil the last few days during his visit
here. I've always liked him but I got a #1 fan after that!!! :)

see you!

Hello rob and holli

the scientist in the wheel chair who commented on einsteins theories was
most probably stephen hawking, correct me if im wrong though.

If we lived in a time where ppl were judged capable or incapable, valued
or valueless based on appeacance alone, society would have missed out on
stephen hawking's genius (although he was a scientist before he became
ill)

This was of course sarcastic. I think it's just ridiculous because Sinead
feels oh so happy now (which is fine for her) she forgets about the role
of church in her life. I think it was of course a personal attack on
the Pope and the institution he stands for. I think it's the wrong thing
to do, to say "live and let live". On this list, we do not have to discuss
what the church did to the human race throughout the centuries - but if
you consider this, acknowledging the pain, feeling it and moving through
it sounds fine, BUT NEVER FORGET!!! And this is why she should not have
apologized because she was right then in what she said on the Late Night
Show!!

Hey I'm a scientist ! Thank you !
I don't think I'm *expected to be less attractive than the average
citizen*. That would be really sad if everyone was thinking that. I'm sure
you meant that it's not important for scientists to be attractive to
succeed in their career.

Sinead, I find, is an incredibly attractive person but I think

mostly because she's such a fierce individual that she's created her own
form of beauty.
Hey, there are some very unattractive guys in the entertainment
business. But you realized, it's sad, they're mostly supporting
characters. Kind of type casts.
by the way, scientist are very attractive.

I didn't say that scientists are NOT attractive. I simply said that the
general public does not have a preconceived notion that scientists must be
attractive (as is the case with the enertainment industry). In fact, the
media portrays scientists as unattractively "dorky"-- the pocket
protector/glasses cliche. Of course there are some recent exceptions:
"Contact," etc. I am sure that as with any profession, science has its
share of ugly/pretty people. I was just pointing out a large stereotype,
and yes, it is "pretty sad." (I am, of course, referring to the United
States. I don't really know how other cultures perceive science).
Appearance should obviously not be a prerequisite for success in any career.
Of course an underlying question here is what/who determines
atttractiveness anyway. But, of course, none of this really has anything
to do with Sinead which is why I didn't post that previous message, but
sent it only to Bilal. Nevertheless, it ended up on jitr...

I admit I'm a little disappointed with Sinead's apology to the Pope. But
I think the important issue is what she means exactly. I didn't hear her
exact comments, but if she apologized for the action, that's cool and
sensible. She isn't compromising her beliefs or apoligizing for her
message, just by admiting she regrets the action.

This is exactly how I feel. She is not saying that everything she
ever said about the church was wrong. I read what she said, and all
it was was that she stated that the actually means of getting her
message across was immature and ridiculous, which, frankly, it was. A
more mature and sophisticated way for her to say what she was feeling
would have been to do exactly what she went on to do. Discuss it.
Write music about it. Reflect and offer well thought-out
pontifications on the subject. She does not regret her stance, nor
does she rescind it, she simply acknowledged that the action was rash.
      SO LIGHTEN UP!

hi,

i had the misfortune of buying the new u2 single please and didnt realise it
was instrumental, so i think i want to get the end of violence soundtrack.
my only problem is that i went to my record store and nowhere could they
find a release date for it over here in australia. have any of the
australians on the list picked up a copy yet? sinead and her music is
wonderful. a friend of mine recently went to live in england and lived in
sinead's suburb/town notting hill. she saw sinead a few times ( as sinead
frequents the cinema that my friend was working at) and she knows where
sinead lives etc etc and also said that sinead's front door is bright pink.
anyway, im rambling. ive just got home from a big night and need some rest.
good nihgt :)

toby.

Hi, I've been a subscriber to this list for a while, but due to time
constraints, I rarely have time to read the contents. However, i'm doing
my column on Sinead O'Connor this coming week and I need to know the finer
details of the apology, as well as some more information about the coming
movie.

If you could forward it right to my mailbox, I'd be very appriciative.

Cheers,

m@

In the Philadelphia area, Sessions at West 54th is shown on Wednesdays

Hi,

I have taken French for 5 years and am of French descent even though I was
born and live in the US.

Okay, I heard that she was indeed saying Tout - this does mean everything.
It is difficult to hear exactly because of the accent, but in relation to
the song lyrics, I believe it is Tout.

I could be wrong.

Tout le monde....
