Thanks for the thoughtful message. This was indeed a terrible, terrible,
untimely, pointless death of a beautiful, kind person. We are all in a
state of shock. It feels like a bad dream.

Hello, everybody!
Good news for all fans in middle Europe:
The German radio station "Deutschlandfunk" airs a 45-minute-interview
with Sinead on Monday, September, 8th.
I do not know exactly if it is a new interview, but the programme list of
the station says it would be an interview about her 10-year-carrer...
I will tape the interview (of course!!!!!) and if you are interested in,
please mail me.

Here's some information how to listen to this interview:
- IN GERMANY, "Deutschlandfunk" is available in nearly every city
	by a usual radio tuner.
-	THE REST OF EUROPE can listen to it via satellite, the station can
be received analouge on the ASTRA satellite system (I do not know exactly
	which frequency...)
-	TIME OF TRANSMISSION: 22.05 MESZ (10 p.m. Central European time)
IMO, the interview will be translated into German - but maybe the
original responses are available, too.
More news to come.
Shalom,

Daniel Heinze from Germany.

This Week In Rock History
August 24, 1990
Sinead O'Connor refused to take the stage if the US National Anthem was
plyed before her show at the Garden State Arts Center (now the PNC Arts
Center) in New Jersey. A patriotic backlash followed as several radio
stations refused to play her music.

Well, I'm searching for info on the film - but in the meantime I can tell
everyone that the title "Oh Mary This London" comes from the traditional
song "The Mountains Of Mourne"...text for this can be found on
http://www.epix.net/~lesley/folk/mourne.htm
I'll check out the BBC2 SCREEN TWO film and get back to you.

hello,

Finally a record company gave Sinead Internet attention....
Columbia Records has made a page containing a bibliography, with at least
one interesting thing;

"She followed this up by recording the opening music for "Oh Mary This
London," a new film for BBC Screen Two."

Can anybody tell me what this might be, and wether there is a recording of
this song available or this film ??????

Secondly it contains a great background !!! DOWNLOAD IT !!!

Thirtly and above all, it contains a 30 seconds MOV-file (QuickTime or
MOV-player Needed) of the video-clip for This Is To Mother You. (and a
AUDIO .RAM-file (30 seconds Real Audio))

The site has a great adress;
http://www.gospel-oak.com
it ain't www.sinead.com because someone who is probably in need for money
and hoping he was able to sell the adress name, registered it already about
half a year ago.

wasn't sinead's trip to jeruselem recently ruined by being chased by
photographers into women only spaces?

i was camping over the weekend & came home last night to diana all over the
tv...i have a great deal of sympathy for her children and for her, dying in
such a pointless manner. between the drunk driver and the idiots chasing her,
she didn't have a chance.

stupid photographers and tabloid publishers are yakking about how the "world
demands" photos of people like diana and sinead out & going about the
business of their lives. not true. i'd rather see a beautiful, consented-to
studio photo than a blurry something i know caused distress to the person in
the picture. it's gruesome and it's unnecessary.

peace to all----claudia

to this event is a vast understatement, as I have enjoyed Sinead's music
immensely since 1990. Also, I think Gospel Oak is a superb piece of work
and the set-list for the present tour is ideal: all of Gospel Oak + the
best songs from Universal Mother.

Glad to be "here" and I'll let you all know what I think of the show
afterwards...

kfa,
Toronto

Hello,

Send to me by JCM

Set list for New York-Beacon Theatre and a small review.

The Emperor's New Clothes
You Made Me the Thief of Your Heart
I am Stretched on Your Grave
A Perfect Indian
This IS a Rebel Song
John, I love You
This is to Mother You
Petit Poulet
Thank You For Hearing Me
In This Heart
Fire on Babylon
The last day of our Acquaintance
Encores
Redemption Song
He Moved Through the Fair
Famine

Great show! The New York audience went wild. There is no doubt in my mind
that Sinead will have no trouble earning a living here in America. The
response was even more enthusiastic than I thought it would be. The show was
much more polished than it was in Asbury Park. The Screaming Orphans were
100% better and Sinead's voice was fearless and strong. The energy was more
intense in N.Y. but the encore of He Moved Through the Fair in Asbury Park
will still be the moment I remember most from this tour.

Hello,

I've asked this before but didn't get a reply, so I'll give it another try;

I am sure there exists a True Type Font of the caracters Sinead uses for
her name on almost every CD !!! I know this for sure because about 2 months
ago I received a letter of someone (damn why did I trash it!!!) who used
this font.
If someone know the title of this font or even better can help me find it
or best; send it to me, PLEASE DO !!!!

Also; Is there someone who knows how to create new fonts, cause I'd like to
use that star+dot as a caracter, ofcourse adding just that caracter to an
existing TTF would also be okay. For example that Prince symbol is added to
a TTF so when pressing "{" while using the TTF you'll get that symbol.
It must be easy to do in Sinead's case because the star already exists in
the TTF entitled "Wingdings" by pressing SHIFT-Y. So only the dot have to
be added..

Went to the show on Saturday night at the Capitol Ballroom in D.C. It
was a great venue since it was so small (compared to the outdoor
festival where I saw her in Switzerland in July) and cozy.

The song lineup was much the same as other people have been quoting.
I really liked her first encore song, Redemption Day by Bob Marley.
It was great.

I got a good recording of the show on Minidisc, much better than my
Switzerland recording that was turned up too high and thus distorted.

Well worth the 4-hr drive to DC. Yay for us!

hello,

I've added 6 of the (IMHO) most interesting articles to my homepage. I will
only include the ones I think are interesting and won't include older ones
then the 1997 ones....
You can find them under "Reading Stuff"
If you want older & more articles, I'd advice you to go to Roman's site.

Also (thanx to Jae Han Kim) I will be able to add resent photo's soon !
Again, for older & more pictures, go to Roman's site !!

hello all---

one of the things i've wondered about is in regard to sinead's interviews
where she talks about ireland & catholicism in ireland "collapsing" because
of child abuse allegations.

i am interested in reading more about this---not so much sinead's point of
view but actual articles that may have run in ireland addressing the issues.

frank mc court's book, " angela's ashes," about growing up in dire poverty
in limerick, ireland has a lot to say about the elitism (at best) and abuse
(at worst) that he suffered as a poor catholic boy. even up thru the 50s &
60s in the US there was the assumption that catholic schools were "strict"
and that nuns & priests had no problem hitting & humiliating children as a
method of teaching.

i was raised catholic & went to parochial school for 3 years, 7th, 8th & 9th
grade. my education there was decidedly substandard. girls were encouraged to
be passive & were physically segregated from the boys on the playground. even
as a young child making my first communion & first confession it felt stilted
& false. i never believed, never had faith in the dogma i was forced to
recite.

as i got older i came to understand what sorts of confines the church sought
to impose on my life as a woman. i saw the main concern (if i listened to the
sermons at mass) was to produce more catholics and to continue to get money
out of people. as a human it is my right to be a sexual being, to control
conception, to choose abortion if contraception fails. i have exerted these
rights throughout my life and have felt no guilt in relation to my
catholicism that never took.

catholic school in the late 70s was pale in comparison to the abuses in
earlier decades. however, i did learn in my 20s that the main priest of our
parish, the one everyone had found to be charismatic and interesting, was in
fact an alcoholic. he would take altar boys to the drive in movies and get
them smashed as well. they often drove home. he also molested some of the
altar boys (to what extent i am unsure).
for once being a girl wasn't to be automatic prey, since he liked boys.
eventually, the truth came out somewhat, but he was not prosecuted or even
punished. last i heard he was sent to a parish in tijuana where he could
molest little brown children who matter less to the church.

in edna o'brien's currently released novel, "down by the river" a young
irish girl is repeatedly raped by her father & ends up pregnant. she attempts
to go to england for an abortion and is hauled back to ireland. i believe
this is somewhat based on a true story and i think i heard something about
sinead speaking out on the girl's behalf. if anyone can refer me to any
articles about this as well i'd be glad to research the subject.

thanks & peace--------claudia

Hi all .... I'll apologize in advance for the (somewhat of a) tirade
which follows --- not directed to anyone on the list, I'm just
using what Michael said as a springboard for some thoughts - no offense
to the members of the list is intended! =8^)

Michael writes:
> You're absolutely right. There is a great deal of good within

> state.

I think that what is good about religions is that there is a sense
of appreciation for life, and a sense that perhaps life's experiences
are more than simply the mechanistic, "age of enlightenment" theories
on what life (and now, with psychology, experience) is.

Many make the distinction between spirituality and religion, though
sometimes the difference is fuzzy. In general, though, religion is
"handed down" from a book, a priest, a power structure, and direct
knowledge of god/dess is denied to the masses, available only from the
elite of the power structure. Spirituality is the awe and respect for
life which is *sometimes* engendered by some religions at some points
in time; it is individual, and known for oneself - no one hands it down
or acts as intermediary or guru. Though people can learn things about
spirituality from one another, it ultimately must be felt and experienced.

Religion, because it is structured hierarchically, is open to abuse.
So, however, are many ideas which are related to both spirituality
and religion. Although it is comforting to focus on a life beyond this
one, ultimately one must respect and honor embodied life, *this* life
that one is living right now. Beliefs which try to blame circumstances
upon transgression (either in this life or a prior one) tend to ignore
the fact that we are all inter-related. "Blaming the victim" mentality
of some doctrines based on Karma tend to give a false sense that all is
"right with the world" -- it is just Karma being worked out. The
concept of "God's Will" works much the same way.

Why are drugs adverse to capitalism? Capitalism always needs a
scapegoat, an *other* on which to blame the ills and to justify
paying shit wages to... what better than "illegal aliens", drug users,
unwed mothers, "radicals", "commies", uneducated and "lazy" people
all "deserve" low wages, no benefits, etc., so that the "rest of us"
can have "decent" wages, health care, education, and a smugness that
"we are better". Without these "low lifes" in work-welfare programs, prison
work, etc., the businessman couldn't afford his BMW. Without actively
denying the worth of a human being for her or his own sake, we couldn't
get them to work their butts off to make some CEO rich.

> But in fact capitalism has wreaked as much
> harm as it has done good, at least.

If it were not for capitalism, we might not be in the ecological crisis
we are now. Of course, other systems support greed and oppression
just as much as capitalism -- some (like dictatorships) are more honest
about what the effect is. Capitialism is a dictatorship of the cash. If
you doubt it, look at the different daily decisions that a homeless
person makes vs. the daily decisions of someone like Bill Gates...

> Geez, I sound radical (and I'm not, really).

"Radical" means "at the root" - hence "radical feminism" attempts to see
what is the root cause of women's issues are. Looking deep at any problem
makes you a "radical" with respect to that problem. Looking deep at
capitalism or ecology will make you a radical.

> Anyway, I very much

I suggest for the good of all life that we grow up quickly...

I heard on the radio today that Sinead will be recording a PBS special today
on 54th St. somewhere in NYC. I am just 4 blocks away.

Z100 was the radio station. They were giving tickets away on the radio.

I don't know in English... in Portuguese this word is referred to a kind
of vodoo.... It's probably from the African slaves in Brazil so it may
be used in other languages as well with the same meaning....
To do a mandinka is then do a kind of vodoo in order to get some result
from it....
don't know if it helps... I thought about htis and I can't really conect
this meaning to the song.... other explanation will be throughly
appreciated by me as well!!!

Sinead's last concert of the present tour was performed last night at
Toronto's Massey Hall.

As I expected, Sinead dedicated the show to the victims of the tragic
accident in Paris. The last song of the encore ("He Moved Through the
Fair") was specifically dedicated to Diana Spencer and her performance was
altogether spellbinding. The way she held the last note of the last word of
the song was truly stunning.

Also, the audience was great: the applause after each song was extremely
enthusiastic and long-lasting and that was great to hear. (In fact, at the
end of the show, when Sinead told the audience this was the last song of
the night, a collective sound of dismay was expressed! Sinead reminded the
audience that the show had to end and that she had to go back to being a
mom in two days!) She was dressed quite casually in dull-colored clothes
and, as with other reports from earlier in the tour I have read off of the
internet, she did not move a great deal from one central spot on the stage.
Personally, I thought that the "loud" songs had something of a muddy,
boomy sound but, despite this, the musicians (especially the cellist and
the guitarist) played superbly throughout the show. The sound on the songs
with a sparse arrangement (or no band at all) was, however, more-or-less
perfect.

The highlights for me were the following songs: "Perfect Indian" (my
all-time favorite Sinead O'Connor song) was performed in absolutely
flawless fashion, a true vocal masterpiece; "John I Love You" was dedicated
to the band she said she would very much miss and was performed to
perfection as well; "Thank You For Hearing Me" was greeted with great
enthusiasm from the audience and was very good; "Tiny Grief Song" was as
flawless as "Perfect Indian" and the ensemble singing of the Screaming
Orphans worked perfectly here: everybody in the place was spellbound by
this performance; "Redemption Song" was sung beautifully; "Last Day of Our
Acquaintance" was both a crowd favorite as well as being a showcase for the
talents of both Sinead and her band.

All in all, the show expressed in its finest moments the incomparable
artistry of Sinead O'Connor and that, of course, is something to see.

kfa,
Toronto

I called my best friend this weekend to get his review of Sinead's show at
Harborlights in Boston last week, and he told me that she sang two songs
from "The Lion and the Cobra":

	"Just Call Me Joe"
	"Drink Before the War"

Having read the set list from all the shows this summer (that have been
posted here), I didn't really believe him and I thought he must have been
mistaken. But he does know Sinead's music very well, and he said that
"Drink Before the War" was the highlight in his opinion.

Can anyone corroborate this? Did anyone make it to the Boston show???

I was at the Boston show. "The Lion and the Cobra" is one of my
all-time favorite albums, and I'm the one who transcribed 95% of the
LatC lyrics for the Sinead archives.

She did not perform any song from that album at this concert.

for emi in the last few years couldn't have been very good. for columbia
to sign her when they haven't pushed other artists who don't have
massive recognition or whathave you, in the past is interesting to me.
i am confident sinead could gain a large u.s. following again. Time
does heal many wounds.
Time will tell, also, weather her new record co. will be more agressive
than her last

Hello everyone,

I'll try to keep it brief but I just wanted to add a couple of cents to
the first show I saw of Sinead.

First of all, I was most impressed with the audience. You could hear a
pin drop during her performance (in fact, during Perfect Indian, my friend
sneezed and I'm sure Sinead heard) however, as mentioned, the audience was
stunning after each song, a round of applause that had Sinead saying
thankyou several times over as well as a mini curtsee (ew sp??). She
seemed extremely relaxed and happy. She was enjoying her night making
jokes with the crew (where I was sitting I could see all the antics going
on off to the side of the stage).

Another note, she didn't play tiny grief song. The set list was exactly
the same except....He moved through the fair was changed to _She_ moved
through the fair as it was dedicated to Diana and, I will confess, I had
never thought too much of that song and i questioned why she put it on the
album as I though ON Raglan Road would have been a much better candidate,
however, her performance last night was...incredible - it was sung softly
and beautifully (with only one clearing of the throat near the end).

She made a lot of dedications throughout the show - she dedicated
"Thankyou for hearing me" to the audience, and changed one of the
"thankyou for loving me"s to a "thanks for hte bracelet you gave" or
something like that - it was cute :)

I loved the performance - I think it was one of the most special I have
seen in a while. It has given me a new impression of Sinead.

Another note - it seemed her voice was impeccable (hm, I think my spelling
is off this late night!) - as Fire on Babylon was the best I've ever heard
out of all the bootlegs I have with that song. I believe she forgot a
verse in This is the last day of our acquaintance, as she didn't sing her
"you were no life raft to me" verse and after singing (instead) this is
the last day... verse she put her hand to her mouth and looked surprised
at her band mates...I don't know maybe it was for another reason, as
musicians, they covered it up smoothly and the audience didn't have a
clue.

Okay so I managed to make this long...

On Much Music today it was mentioned that she did a live performance in
the "environment" on Sunday (damn having to work on that day!) and it will
be re-broadcasted (phew!) If anyone has any info on times could they
please let the list know? and I'll do my best in finding out as well :)

Thanks for hearing me folks,

Suzy

i had wondered what mandinka meant as well and now the song makes a lot
more sense to me...here's my interp, just shooting from the hip...(lyrics
off the mars-l sinead page)

I'm dancing the seven veils
Want you to pick up my scarf
See how the black moon fades
Soon I can give you my heart

-sounds like spell work to me...ritual dances, the depositing of an
object infused with the spellworker's energy in the path of the "spellee"
so he will pick it up, attention to the phases of the moon...definitely
love magic

I don't know no shame
I feel no pain
I can't see the flame

-don't know anything about this particular brand of magick, but i know a
lot of magick involves trance, which often render the worker impervious
to pain...candles and fire are very prominent in magick as well

But I do know Man-din-ka
I do know Man-din-ka
I do know Man-din-ka
I do

-perhaps "they" are practicing different form of magick, trying to
justify it as the correct way because it is the oldest & therefore purest
form...

They're throwing it all this way
Dragging it back to the start

-perhaps trying to prove this is the right path of magick by showing the
physical manifestations of its work -telekinesis...-

And they say, "See how the glass is raised?"

-that line has always sounded very threatening to me, kind of like do it
our way or we'll spill it on you.

I have refused to take part
I told them "drink something new"
Please let me pull something through

the pull something through part sounds like channelling or the practice
of being "ridden" by the spirits in voudoun/voodoo...

I do
Mandinka
Soon I can give you my heart
Soon I can give you my heart
Soon I can give you my heart

-i do magick to bring you to me so i can give you my heart? so that's my
humble interpretation...thanks for the info...i accidentally deleted the
posting with the definition of mandinka in it, so i forgot who sent it
in...

"whatever it may bring i will live by my own policies
i will sleep with a clear conscience, i will sleep in peace."

Hello.

As i mentioned here before i have a large list of sinead o'connor live
concerts on audio and video.
But when stroling through my music collection i found a lot of other
artists/groups (like genesis, alanis morisetta, tracy bonham, loreena
mckenneth, pink floyd, u2, bj=F6rk, tanita tikaram, suzanne vega, but then
much more) of wich i had either audio or video concerts.
I made a list of this but this jitr is not to right place to place it.
If you are intrested in live concerts other then those from sinead please
let me know and i mail you this list.
It might be worthwile to take a look at it and if your fav. artists (except
sinead ofcourse) is not there, simply delete it.
Take care...eduard

Found in a dutch music magazine this review on the folk-festival in
dranouter, belgium (i was not there myself)
On sinead's head is for a change hair growing (black) but further there are
not much changes. De Irish singer moves to tears with a very folky concert
with much songs from her latest gospel oak ep.
After this briljant show we get the not so great NOA whio was misplaced at
this concert

A short review i know but a positiv one from a music magazine [oor]

Re Last Day - Not sure why Sinead has taken to omitting the "you were no
life raft to me" section of this song, as this additional verse was what
made the song stand out in past live performances. But it has to be said
that she has taken to singing a softer version of what was once a "fuck
off" angry song, so maybe that's why this verse is now left out - so that
it fits in with the mellower mood.

Just a few points of interest:

     1. I totally agree with Claudia's assessment of
celebrity photographs. I much prefer studio shots
to those ugly flash-in-the-pan ones taken in the
         street.

     2. We all love you Mandy, but why in the hell do I
keep getting double messages from you??? When I
log on at work in the morning and I read that I
have 42 messages, I know it's really only 30 or
         so... Help!!!

     3. Any news on THE BUTCHER BOY?

     Thanks,

     jeffery

Hi

I know I've had a bad start on the jitr - what with blank messages and
everything appearing twice. With Michael Berch's and Marcel's help I was
able to rectify the blank message problem, however I have no idea why my
messages appear twice. I KNOW how annoying this is as I get repeated
messages too. Believe me, if I could solve this, then I would do so
immediately - the last thing I want to be is a pain in the arse!!
On another note, this will unfortunately be one of my last messages to the
list for a while, as it's a company email/internet package and I'm leaving
this job on Friday, so having no PC at home means no more access to jitr
for a while :-( I'll miss the regular updates, news, discussions - it's
been a brief but nonetheless enjoyable email exchange. As soon as I have
access to email I'll resubscribe, but for now it's farewell. Thanks to
everyone for their valued input - especially the recent US/Canadian concert
reviews.

Best wishes
Mandy

I meant to type "In This Heart" but made a mistake...I thank Suzy for
correcting me here. Therefore the statement in my original message should
read as follows:

"Tiny Grief Song" was as flawless as "Perfect Indian" and the ensemble
singing of the Screaming Orphans worked perfectly here: everybody in the

I'm sure Suzy will agree with me about the performance, though!

Mandinka is indeed a tribe in West Africa, and their language is
also called "Mandinka" - so one who knows the language would
"know Mandinka". Not necessarily what Sinead meant by the song,
though.

I don't know anything about the tribe so I can't speak to the
magical considerations, but one can probably assume there was
something akin to shaminism in the tribe. There are some percussion
recordings available of Mandinka artists; a web search would bring
some up.

Dear Friends,
The word "Mandinka" is an African word, but more than just a
word, its a People, a tribe, a tribe found in The Ancient Villages of Mali,
near Gambia....Anyway 2 the'point..The Mandinka are especially known for
their "music" they are traditional historians, praise singers, master
musicians. Well, I dont know if this helps any, but at least we know the
true meaning of the "word" Mandinka :- )
I just wanted to add, I was at the Los Angeles Concert, and it
was my "first time" seeing Sinead *live, in person*.....I have only waited
all my life to see her
:- ), Well, the concert was beyond greatness, and it definately etched in my
soul a permanent memory.....I was very near the stage 11th row, I wanted to
jump up and scream "I love you" or something, but I sat there silent and
still listening to the most beautiful sound I've ever heard....well, just had
to get that out, 2 someone that might understand how I be feelin :- ) *Jeff

In response to Richard A. Holmes, I had a couple of things I wanted to
mention. I hope you are all not getting terribly sick of this stuff.

Richard, you are correct. Drug use is not adverse to capitalism.
Much like a tennis tournament (I'm watching the US Open right now), or
any competition, it "needs," losers. You can't have winners without
losers. And capitalism is a competitive system which puts production
(work) far ahead of any other aspect of life. We are becoming a very
strange species.

So no, drug use is not adverse to capitalism. It may actually be
integral. In the '60s the famous people who were turning on and
tuning out spoke of "getting real," and "expanding their minds." It
may be that drug use does aid in the expanding of one's mind. It may
be more conducive to *real* learning than sobriety. But, it wouldn't
seem to encourage the automaton mentality so prevalent in today's work
force. It makes people lazy and apathetic. Perhaps what it really
does is make them feel completely stultified by the impotence of the
individual. In either case, Baudelaire once wrote that we should pray
for a man like Edgar Allen Poe who sought solace in the debauchery of
wine because "he saw, and he knew." I think what he was saying was
that when you "see and know," you are removed from the state of
blissful ignorance. Drug use isn't a contract with knowledge by any
means but it certainly doesn't seem to be akin to production.

That's it. Thanks for your input Richard. I think you "see and
know."

Michael

Just a note to say that when I was sitting in a restaurant on the Oregon
coast two weeks ago, I heard "This is to Mother You" on their music
satellite. My jaw dropped. I don't really listen to the radio, so I don't
know know if it's being played, but my husband listens to several stations
and he's never heard it. Is it getting airtime? It's on a satellite station
somewhere.

Um, I hadn't read the review before I mailed the URL - suffice it to say
that, now that I have read the piece, the only good thing about it is the
accompanying photo of Sinead (taken presumably whilst singing "Fire On
Bablyon" from the look on her face ;))...Mr Ross obviously isn't a fan, but
at least the photo's cool :-)

Hello,

Surfing the net I found a great Japanese 3-inch (flip-pack) cd-single
containing a sleeve picture I've never seen before on another cd-single or
vinyl single.
The cd costs just $9 so that isn't expensive, though postage costs $8 which
makes it to expensive for me (knowing I already do have those songs)
If you are interested or just wanna see the sleeve check;

http://www.mediawars.or.jp/~mundo/collect/file/s-oconnor.html

BTW; the bootlegs CD's (incl. the live ones) are still available.

It will be airing on PBS on Oct. 11. Check you local listings for more info.

Sheryl Crow, MeShell N'degeocello, Beck, Shawn Colvin and many many more will
also have their own PBS special.

For more info. check out www.sessionsatwest54th.com
