Hello,

Found on the net;

Reproduced from Living Marxism issue 84, November 1995

                   Never forget the Famine

Mark Ryan ('Digging up Ireland's dead',
September) rightly slams the psychobabble of
Sinead O'Connor et al. But then he advocates
his own panacea - total oblivion. The Great
Famine was so horrible, he argues, that the best
way to deal with it is to forget it. How many
times have I heard this bland prescription from
                   the mouths of British pseudo-revolutionaries?
Forget the 800 years of imperialist aggression,
the mass evictions and the supervised
starvation of over a million Irish people in the
                   1840s.

Certain things are not best forgotten. In fact
nothing is best forgotten. Every event in history
should be analysed and put into perspective.
That is what makes human progress possible.
Surely the atomic-bombing of Hiroshima and
Nagasaki was also a horrific experience. I didn't
see Living Marxism suggesting to the Japanese
that the best thing would be to forget it.

The clearest analysis of the Famine was made
by James Connolly in Labour in Irish History.
Why did Irish people starve? Because vast
shiploads of wheat, barley and cattle were
exported to England in the rigid application of
                   laissez-faire economics, or, as Connolly
described it, 'the economic principles that lie at
the base of capitalist society'. Connolly was also
scathing about the Irish middle class leaders
who stood aside and watched their people
starve while forbidding them to seize the
cartloads of grain passing along the roads. The
rights of property and free competition were
paramount. We are still stuck with the iniquities
of the free market, the festishism of property
rights, and the perennial betrayal of our middle
class 'opposition' leaders. The lessons are
obvious. They should not be forgotten.

                   A reader Derby

Hello,

Found something else. (Made me smile :-))

MUSIC: The Long Black Veil by The Chieftains. A wonderful album, consisting
mainly of traditional Irish folk songs,
interpreted by guests ranging from Ry Cooder to Sting, Mick Jagger to Tom
Jones. The Chieftains have been bringing their
country's music to a worldwide audience for more than a quarter-century,
but they've never sounded fresher than here.
Cooder's guitar playing adds plenty, as do the guest vocals and the sheer
invigorating nature of the music. I'd give this a 9.5 out
of 10, only because they forgot to lock the door and nasty-ass Sinead
O'Connor somehow got in the studio.

I found this in Entertainment Weekly.

"U2 kicked off their new tour in New York yesterday, making a surprose
appearance at a downtown Kmart. Fellow Irish performer Sinead O'Connor
was also on hand, but she works there." --Norm MacDonald on SNL

just call me joe form bbc session

1990: the emperor new clothes
includes the emperor new clothes (remix hank shocklee)
the emperor new clothes (7" mix)
i'm stretched to your grave (apple brightness mix)

I have finally figured out how to put a petition on the web.
Please sign this petition to show your support regarding the; Mint Green Ribbon Campaign for the Awareness of Abuse.
I cannot thank you enough for helping put child abuse to an end and showing that we care about our children in this country and abroad.

Sincerely,
Godspeed,
Holli Marshall

Below is the list of SINEAD O'CONNOR items I have for sale. All are
from my own personal collection, and have been acquired over the past ten
years - I'll miss them. I am holding this sale because my daughter's sixth
birthday is coming up in one month and I want to get her some really nice
presents.  ;}

The grading system is based on that of _Record Collector_ magazine - I
will be more than happy to answer any specific questions concerning the
condition of items listed. Inquiries as to track listing, description, etc
are welcome as well.

Prices are in US dollars. First come, first served on all set sale
items. Bidding will end on March 22nd. All payments for items must be
received by March 29th unless otherwise negotiated with me. I will also
consider trades - either ask for my want list, or make an offer.
Everything is negotiable.

Postage within the US is included on any order over $20. Everywhere
else, postage is included for orders over $30.

Everything is guaranteed for full refund. Please contact me directly
with any questions at:

Hi all.

It came to my attention that Sinead probably recorded a song together with
a japanese percussionist called Joji Hiroto. The song is called 'everything
comes from you'.

Is there anybody who knows more about this song or actually has it.
I'd love to hear more about it.

Eduard

As a new member of the JITR mailing list, I'd just like to say that I'm
Sinead-sick and need a fix. Does anyone know when her new EP "Gospel Oak" is
scheduled for release?

thank you,

COMMON GROUND: VOICES OF MODERN IRISH MUSIC

ANNOUNCING A NEW WEB SITE

http://www.emi-premier.co.uk/commonground

EMI has created an interactive web site to compliment its praised
"Common Ground" release. With song clips, bios, photos, texts and
interviews, perhaps the site's most innovative element is its
"Musicians and Instruments" page.

This features written texts and photos on Irish music's more
distinctive instruments -- its pipes, fiddles, Irish bouzouki,
whistles, harp and accordion -- plus, a web first. Sound clips
of the instruments, isolated from the mixes themselves, are presented
in various combinations, from solo to duet before joining back in the
full ensemble. For the accordion, for instance, first we can hear the
accordion on its own, extracted from the mix of the "Cavan Potholes"
track. We can then hear the same segment paired with the fiddle and
finally, a third option: embedded back in the full mix of the "Cavan
Potholes" song. Similar presentations highlight each of the genre's
unique instruments.

The "Common Ground" site is informative: It features full artist bios
on its illustrious list of guest artists from both the pop and folk
fields; texts and maps on Ireland, the famine, emigration, even on the
sessions themselves.

It is entertaining: 30-second clips from each of the album's tracks
are featured.

It is educational: Interactive samples of the form's distinctive
instruments compliment interviews and texts on their origins.

It is visually attractive: fine, earthy graphics come on quick
downloads, as do photos of the artists and instruments.

HOW TO USE THE SITE

Listeners playing the excerpt of Tim and Neil Finn's "Mary of the
South Seas" might check the "Personal Journey" section to discover the
remarkable circumstances that led to the Finns' participation in the
project and how they wrote the song in a matter of hours the very day
of the session. They might then look into the artists' bio to see a
photo, discover the Finns' origins in Split Endz and Crowded House,
and learn that the song was written about the experience of their
mother leaving Ireland as a child. Curiosity aroused, listeners could
then consult the "Texts" section to read about emigration and its toll
on the Irish people and land.

Having heard the beautiful low whistle solo, listeners could access
the "Musicians and Instruments" page to see that it was the gifted
Davy Spillane playing it. His bio could be read and then listeners
could look into the whistle itself, read about its origin, see its
photo, and then enter the interactive feature that first highlights the
low whistle on its own, extracted from the "Common Ground" track,
"Whistling Low/Errigal," and then embedded back within the mix.

The same can be done with any and all songs on "Common Ground."

REVIEWS of COMMON GROUND, the CD:

"'Common Ground' is the most cohesive and unblemished of the
star-studded co-operative musical ventures which have become so
ubiquitous of late. And certainly, a strenuous contender for the
title of Irish album of the year." Hot Press, Ireland

"The album is proof that, in the Irish music renaissance, all paths
lead back to Donal Lunny. [Irish music is] relevant in a modern sense,
but it still has the umbilical cord to the well of tradition. Common
Ground is testament to this. While Bono movingly revisits 'Tomorrow'
from U2's October album, written after his mother's funeral, others
immerse themselves in great Irish ballads to revelatory effect." The
Observer, UK

"5 stars. Neither a reverent attempt at Celtic scholarship nor a
haphazard grab bag of shelf tracks, Common Ground is a cohesive cycle
of well-crafted pop songs that wear their shared influence clearly but
without cliche in a brew noteworthy for its reliance on gentle but
seductive mid-tempo renderings... A musically satisfying homage to
its musical source, and one that any fan of this sleeper genre will
want to here." Music Central, Microsoft Network

"Lunny either has the luck of the devil or is exceedingly silver-
tongued. However he recruits such stellar guests, he's also an expert
in coaxing inspiring performances out of them. Many of the songs
presented here are elegiac... This is no Emerald Isle nostalgia; this
is contemporary music rooted in Irish culture." Mojo, UK

"Combining stellar rockers with Ireland's best traditional players,
Common Ground [is] a sturdy collection of green soul." Entertainment
Weekly, USA

"Donal Lunny, revered as the Quincy Jones of Ireland, has pulled
together an impressive group of fellow countrymen for Common Ground, a
sort of spiritual tribute to his homeland." Entertainment Today

"'Common Ground' is one of the most distinctive and long awaited
albums to emerge this year... a collection of gems from the great
well of Celtic music, overseen by one of its great exponents... It's
one of those albums that end up in the treasured possession department
where one's life would go with it." Rock'n'Reel

"'Common Ground' witnesses the outstanding influence of one individual
in the Irish arena and trounces all those mushy, 'Woman's Heart'
compilations of tunes from the old sod." NME, UK

"The Donal Lunny-curated 'Come Together' album has an appeal as
enduring at the charm of the Emerald Isle itself." Time Out, UK

"Not for nothing is Donal Lunny known as 'Ireland's Quincy Jones...'
On Common Ground Lunny collaborates with a stellar cast of vocalists."
Music Week, UK

"This is not only a predominantly stirring collection of music, it is
one that will have positive broad-ranging ramifications." Folk Roots,
UK

"Donal Lunny is a genius... [Common Ground is] a characteristically
forward-looking concept from a musical visionary whose work as part of
groups such as Planxty and Moving Hearts has deeply altered the nature
of Irish music." The Irish Times

"The album lives up to its hype, and its star-studded cast list.
Irish music is now seriously fashionable and Donal Lunny, one of the
greatest musicians and producers of Irish folk music over the last
twenty years, has assembled some of that country's greatest musical
egos and abilities to create an album that represents -- as the
subtitle says -- voices of Modern Irish Music... A finely crafted
album, another great product from the Lunny music factory." The
List, UK

"Nothing, it seems, can stop the rise and rise of Irish music... now
comes 'Common Ground',a classy compilation..." Sunday Life, Belfast

"A Beautiful collection... Such star power would be irrelevant if the
product didn't match the promise. But Common Ground honors its Celtic
origins with love and a wealth of lovely songs and performances. Like
much of Irish music, the collection if contemporary despite its deep
connection to tradition." Fun Magazine, USA

"Gorgeous." The Sentinel, USA

"A shimmering musical portrait of Ireland." Sunday, USA

Hi all you who are going to London on the 12th of April to see Sinead
perform live, it would be nice if we all could get together somewhere
before the concert to have a drink or something. It would be nice to meet
other Sinead fans and members of this list. If you are interested feel
free to mail me or the list. Looking foreward to hear from you (and
looking foreward to the consert too).

I was a long time since I wrote to the mailing list, so maybe it will be
nice if I'll give you the best 10 rock albums I listened to. I saw
something like that posted by others too lately.

Anyway, here it is:

1. The Lion and The Cobra - Sinead

2. The Queen is Dead - The Smiths
(pay attention that both of these great album are quite short - less than
40 mintues. So the length really doesn't count. )

3. The Joshua Tree - U2

4. Debut - Bjork

5. Boys For Pele - Tori Amos
(no doubt, Tori Amos is the most talented rock performer "in town". I had
no alternatives but to put all her three albums in my top ten list. )

6. I do not want what I haven't got - Sinead
(despite this fucking long name).

7. Little Earthquakes - Tori Amos

8. Under The Pink - Tori Amos

9. War - U2
(The second best album cover, after the cover of TLaTC of course)

10. No Need to Argue - The Cranberries.

BTW, I would also like to mention the album of the soundtrack of "Pulp
Fiction" which is an unbelievable great album but I can't consider it as
a rock album.

will be more than happy to answer any specific questions concerning the
condition of items listed. Inquiries as to track listing, description, etc
are welcome as well. Everything is guaranteed for full refund. Please
contact me directly with any questions at:

Hi,
Does anyone have the phone number for TicketMaster in NY? Also, does anybody know if this event will sell out (usually these big things don't)?
Where exactly is it taking place? And one more, does anybody know the lineup, I mean when exactly will Sinead be performing?
Thanks
D.

Okay, the concert in New York is the Guinness concert at
Randall's Island at Downing's Stadium. There are sixty
bands all together. Sinead is on the first day, June 14,
1997. I know that on that day, Van Morrison is also
playing, along with the Chieftains. The price is $37.00 for
just that day. The tickets are all general admission.
Tickets go on sale Saturday March 15, 1997 at 10:00 and the
phone number for ticketmaster is 212-307-7171.

I was wondering if anyone had any more information on the Randall's Island
show. What day will Sinead be performing? How do I get tickets? Is she
performing with someone else?

According to the Voice ad, tickets go on sale tomorrow (Saturday) morning
at 10 am, and cost $37 + $3 parking fee for each day. Limited number of
2-day tickets for $64 + $6 parking fee. And there's a special package for
Amex Gold and Platinum cardholders - you can call 212-307-GOLD. Everyone
else can go to Ticketmaster or call them at 212-307-7171. The shows are
Saturday June 14th and Sunday June 15th from 11 AM-11 PM.

The lineups (it says many more artists to be announced and on the side
says 60 bands, 3 stages):

Saturday
Van Morrison
Sinead O'Connor
Christy Moore
The Chieftains

Black 47
Frances Black
Paul Brady
Shane MacGowan
Tommy Makem
Maura O'Connell
John Prine

Blink
Cherish The Ladies
The Devlins
Jimmie Dale Gilmore
Katell Deineg
The Mahones
Ashley MacIsaac
Susan McKeown
Pierce Turner

Sunday
Van Morrison
Natalie Merchant
The Chieftains

Mary Black
Billy Bragg
Paula Cole
Freedy Johnston
Richard Thompson
Suzanne Vega
Wilco

Big Geraniums
Great Big Sea
John Wesley harding
Ben Lee
Sinead Lohan
Makem Bros.
Moxy Fruvous
Mundy

Where I separated them is where the ad did, so 3 stages, it says
continuous music, so I really hope Natalie and Paula don't overlap,
because then what will I do??

Rachel :)

Hi I am from Ontario and Me and my friends want to fly to NY to see
Sinead but I need some more info. How can I get tickets, it is not on
the web pag for ticket master U.S. So is it even a ticket master show or
do I need to call a different number and what is it. What day will she
be preforming and how easy or accesable is it from the airport. And any
other important info that you might want to share.

Thanks
Rob

Does anyone know if Sinead just happened to be in Seattle this past week?
The 12th actually....I REALLY SERIOUSLY think I saw her at the Sea-Tac
airport getting into a van that was labeled "O'Connor".....Of course I was
in shock and doubted that it could have been her so I just stood there in
awe- BUT this woman was SO strikingly like Sinead, very very short dark
hair and slender.....I Really do think I saw her....Anyone know
anything!!???

Hello,

If you know any coming live-dates of Sinead please mail them to me so I can
put then on the homepage.
Till yet I know of these;

1) Randall's Island show: Guinness Fleadh '97 June 14th and 15th 11AM to
11PM
each day. (SINEAD ONLY ON FIRST DAY)
2) Irish Music and Arts festival at the Barbican Centre in London. It takes
place from 4-12 April; for further information and a free festival guide
call the Barbican Box Office 0171 638 8891. (SINEAD ONLY ON LAST DAY)
3) Sinead might also appear on the Lilith Fair tour this summer. I think
it's
an american festival-tour with female artists, and you can read about it
on
<http://aye.net/~mikewhy/toriamos.html>, a page about Tori Amos. Other
artists on this tour are Sarah MacLachlan, Jewel and the Cardigans.

If you know more dates or details about that last one, please lemme know.

BTW: FOR THE ONES WHO WHERE INTERESTED IN THE JAPANESE AINYG, please send
me you adress again, I seem to have lost it. Till yet the japanese guy
haven't found any below the $40, but he would look last weekend. And will
update me today !

Hi,
Info regarding Lilith Fair can be found under http:\\www.lilithfair.com.
I just checked, and they don't have any dates posted as of yet. The whole
festival will start in the beginning of July and finish up at the end of August.
Sorry, but it looks like they are only planning on playing in the States and
Canada. Sarah McLachlan and her management came up with the idea of having
a festival consisting of only female performers (great idea if you ask me!).
Anyhow, much more info regarding confirmed performers (unfortunately Sinead
isn't one of them yet - but I'm still hoping) can be found on the website.
(Hallo Antje - das war aber ein netter Brief))
D.
