along the favorite record string...
i guess my opinion is that all of sinead's records are brilliant; and what
makes one or another more appealing to one person or another is each person's
sensibilities. for instance, my favorite is the lion and the cobra because
my life is really fucked up and hearing someone else just as hopelessly
disallusioned as i am scream about it just relates. for me, i do not want...
is so much about a healing process and coming out on th eother side. this
hasn't quite happened to me yet so i feel as if it's beyond me sometimes.
none of her albums really are the kind that you put on and have a few friends
over for a good time. whatever that means.
'i do not want what i have got' kc
'it's just the way i smile' you said'

Hmmmmmmmmmm. I like a lot of what you say and what this letter is going to
be is me thinking through why I don't agree with your conclusion.

I generally like music that takes "work" although on the other hand, music
MUST grab me at a level below thought in order for me to like it. I would,
for instance, trade the combined collected works of Philip Glass and John
Cage for a single solid James Brown groove. I guess that's part of it -- I
have a tremendous respect for (and susceptibility to :) a well-crafted
melody or a good hook, both of which WANT has in abundance.

You're right that speaking obliquely doesn't mean you're being less honest,
although it might (emphasis on MIGHT) mean that the artist is not given to
exposing him or herself, either because s/he's a private person or because
s/he's not ready to deal with the problems she's writing about herself yet.

I think Bob Dylan is an example of the former -- he has written intensely
personal songs that were usually too oblique for anyone to figure out what
real-life situation he meant (or even if there was a literal real-life
inspiration for the song). He wrote about his marriage for ten years and
only mentioned his wife's name in one song. None of it is "dishonest" and
much of it is frighteningly honest, because you're watching him confront
parts of himself he obviously doesn't like.

I think Sinead, in her early years, is an example of the latter, however. I
don't feel, lisening to L&C, that she's ready to confront some of the stuff
herself.

OTOH that doesn't, or shouldn't, affect the album, and ultimately I don't
think it's the abstraction of L&C that turns me off (BLONDE ON BLONDE is
one of my favorite albums in the entire world, and I don't think it's
possible to get more abstract than songs like "Obviously Five Believers"
without inventing your own language). I simply think that WANT exhibits
more mature songwriting and grabs me at a level that L&C doesn't,
emtionally and musically. Ultimately, the deciding factor is that the songs
on L&C continue to blur together for me, even after eight years of
listening to it frequently. Everything on WANT stands out.

>but she wrote it to appeal to a larger audience.

This is the one thing in your post I really don't agree with. Do you think
she was trying to have a hit? >Maybe< with NC2U, but I think the rest of
the album is too raw for radio in many ways. And if she were on a publicity
roll, she probably wouldn't have done what she did that year on SNL.

We're in the process of moving the list from one site to another
and converting to Majordomo. The request mail is in a queue and
I hope to process it after testing is done -- shouldn't be long.

To everyone else: stay tuned for an announcement on this shortly.

I remember a long time ago reading an article where Sinead seemed very
bitter and angry towards U2 and their power over the music scene in
ireland...something to the effect of sinead saying that she doesn't like
the way a band has to "kiss bono's ring" to get out of ireland. i
believe that this was in an old rolling stone (circa IDNWWHIHG) with her
on the cover. i was wondering if anyone remembers her attitude toward
them then or if anyone knows what caused her to chage her mind about
them. (i am assuming that she has changed her mind due to the recent
collaborations with members of U2 (in the name of the father...etc)).

Her lyrics have certainly matured and have become less oblique. Back in the
"Cobra" days, she said she would pretend to be other people when writing
her songs. (Musician, 1988.) Now, she's taking her own perspective.

Musically, her albums are too individual to foster much comparrison. Thus,
ranking quality in terms of progression would only give way to individual
tastes.

In short, I know what I like, but I won't say if it's better than anything
else.

The JITR list has a new home, server.postmodern.com. It has also
become a Majordomo list -- Majordomo is a spiffy list server that
takes care of subscribe/unsubscribe requests, info about the list,
and archive requests. I've included the file that is returned when
you inquire about the list at the "jitr-request" address; it
explains how to use Majordomo.

The new list posting address is:

	jitr@server.postmodern.com

Routine list requests should be sent to

	majordomo@server.postmodern.com

according to the instructions below.

There *is* now a digest version, but I haven't fully debugged
it yet, so you probably don't want to subscribe to the digest yet;
I'll do some more testing and announce it.

The FTP archive will move over to postmodern.com, as soon as I can
coordinate with the admin of the old site. The current site on
net.bio.net should be around a few days at least, but I have a copy
and just need to get FTP set up here and integrate it with the Majordomo
archive stuff. I'll announce the new archive procedures when they're
available. We should be able to get the archive on the Web soon as
well.

Please let me know if there are any problems by sending mail to
jitr-approval@server.postmodern.com. I hope this will improve
responsiveness of the list (both postings and requests); I have
been very busy in the last few months working on a new magazine
to be launched in June (shameless plug: check out our home page at
http://www.postmodern.com/ ) and have consequently had less time

Enjoy--

One of these days I'll get into the habit of making timely replies...

> I often enjoy Sinead's covers -- my criticism of GIRL has nothing to do

> You" is one of the few Dylan covers I've ever LIKED. I usually hate to hear

Covers are such strange animals. The success of any cover depends on how
much of one artist's identity can be injected into another artist's work.
Don't know how you'd react to Bill Frisell's cover of "Just a Woman,"
but he does a great job with Aaron Copland's "Billy the Kid" and Madonna's
"Live to Tell."

Sorry for the off-topic...

> We simply have to disagree with the suitability of her voice for jazz

The big band didn't fit Sinead, but what if the songs were re-arranged some
way to suit her voice? The "Scarlet Letters" arrangement should have been
the direction for her to explore. In short, AINYG was a crossover attempt
in the wrong direction.

perhaps you should think of those like me who have been waiting for
years for her to come to indiana to preform her own material. Besides
seeing her preform with Peter Gabriel at Womad, she hasn't come around at
all, to my knowledge.

What ever happened to Sinead and Peter anyhow?

I hope I can beat the rush to answer this one.

The language is Irish Gaelic, and the text (from what I hear) is a trans-
lation of the Biblical text quoted on the back side of the LP cover.
(My first copy of "Lion" is on vinyl!)

The official line upe for Lollapalooza 95 came out and Sinead is going to
be part of the tour. I'd much rather have had her doing her own tour as
I'm not about to shell out big bucks to go to this farce.

i found a sinead song on the cd-rom of peter gabriel "xplora 1".

sinead does the vocals on this song called "everything comes from you".
the musicans are mostly from peter's own label "realworld".

does anyone know if this song is available on cd? the version on
"xplora 1" is just a short intro of it...

tnx

I just started subscribing to jitr yesterday and I'm not really sure
which address queries are supposed to be directed to; advance apologies
if this annoys someone. I just read in the newspaper that Sinead is on
the lollapalooza bill this year. I'm worried though because she wasn't
listed as a headliner which would probably mean that she's only playing
certain cities. Does anyone know details? I saw Sinead when she played
here in Vancouver, Canada in the summer of 1990 and my awe was confirmed
and surpassed. Thanks! jenny.

Someone reported a new Sinead single (Haunted) about a week ago, but did
not know if it was available as retail version. Well, it is. From ZTT
records, named _Shane MacGowan And Sinead O'Connor Haunted_ (UK cat.no.
ZANG65CD). It has four tracks, only the title track with Sinead :-(

Also, if anyone out there is interested, I found a compilation CD called
_Celtic Moods_ which has two tracks by Sinead (among many other tracks by
various artists of variable quality). The most interesting track is
_Heroine_ performed by Sinead and The Edge. I think this is a fairly rare
track? And the other track by Sinead is _Three Babies_. This CD is
available from Circa Records/Virgin (UK cat.no.VTCD45)

once again i must ask what has happened to the once-hostile attitude
sinead used to have toward U2? she seems to be quite chummy with them
recentlty.

Heroine is from the soundtrack to the movie The Captive.
I think the soundtrack is hard to find, but I think it may have
just been re-released.
I am still trying to cope with Sinead playing on the Lolapolooza tour.
I don't know if I'd really want to go and see her in that kind of
environment and with the kind of people that now are attracked to that tour.

Unfortunately, the FTP archives are currently not available, but will
be in the next few weeks. I needed to remove them from the old site
(net.bio.net) when the list moved, but the new site
(ftp.postmodern.com) is not ready yet. (I have the archives, but anon
FTP isn't yet configured). Plus there's the added complication that
we are changing the IP addresses of all the postmodern.com hosts
sometime in the next couple weeks, so y'all might want to hang in
there for a while. I'll announce the new archive location and
procedure when it's available.

I think it's great Sinead is involved with this summer's Lollapolooza tour -
I think she needs to get out and be in the mainstream again, which she
really hasn't been doing lately...I think she's largely perceived as sort of
a fringe artist by the public at large these days, which is sort of silly,
as she's sold zillions of albums - I think this is a cool step for her to
take, and honestly, I'd go see her in just about any circumstance (except
maybe with some bogus VH1-type crowd at some lame tribute)...As far as the
Heroine soundtrack is concerned, it's a nice song, but you have to be more
of an Edge fan to appreciate the soundtrack as a whole, as it's him doing
the music...

why let your prejudice and snobbishness get in your way of enjoying what
will be a rare chance to see Sinead in the US? it's true that i am not
looking forward to having to deal with a crowd there because they probably
won't be as interested in her perfomance as i will be, in fact i am expecting
that they will be quite rude and not pay much attention at all. however,i am
a long way away from even thinking about complaining about getting a
chance to see her live, especially if it is only going to be an hour away
from my home.

Well, Lollapolooza sure won't help her be seen as mainstream! That's
a pretty far out tour, always has been. She'll be perceived like most
of the LPZA bands: grunge, teen, way-out, extreme fringe.

Where did that come from? "Prejudice" is prejudging people without any
reason to do so. I think there's ample evidence to show that a Lollapalooza
crowd is probably going to be loud, rude, ugly and stupid. And if it's
"snobbish" to want to avoid drunken fraternity morons throwing up on your
shoes and screaming idiocies so you can't even enjoy the music, then I'm a
snob too.

So Michelle is prejudiced and you are... ? I hate to say this, but not
wanting to spend your time with assholes isn't prejudice, it's simple
intelligence.

Hello Robert C and any other readers:
Robert Conder expressed bewilderment and annoyance
with Sinead O'Connor's collaborations with members
of U2. I assume that he is aware that she not only
worked with The Edge on "Heroine," which is not a
new track, but also with Bono on "You Made Me the Thief
of Your Heart," (which could once have been Courtney Love's
life soundtrack -- just kidding) from the film In The
Name of The Father. The "Heroine" tune apparently was
a few years ago on a 12 inch single because when
I learned about it back then it was already out of
print, so a record store friend who owned a copy taped
it for me back then so I could air it on community radio,
which I did several times.  Now I can buy a copy, hooray;
and I only know about it because I joined this silly list
a week or so ago!

	I have no problem with her working with her peers;
it's not our business to make her live in a pigeonholed
existence based on past thoughts that only represented what
she was thinking that day. I hate it when people do that to
me and I'm certainly not going to do that to her -- that is
force her to live the rest of her life a slave to each sentence
that comes out of her mouth. Everybody changes and grows each
day, and apparently she knows that and so do members of U2,
who are apparently rather mature people who care more about
being supportive to great talent than to bearing grudges based
on a sentence uttered by a young person who had no real personal
beef with them....lisa m.

Michelle Ryan informs us that "Heroine" is from the
movie "The Captive," so I am apparently mistaken in thinking
it may have been on a 12 inch single at one time. Maybe
that soundtrack is what a record store friend used as
a source for me to have an airplay copy...all I know
is I've had a copy for several years taped from something
that was already out of print by the time I learned of it

and I'm glad because my stooopid tape had sort of a glitch
on it anyway...lisa mcg--

It seems like everybody wants to make some comment on their
opinion of Sinead's choices in who to work with and where to perform.
I find this rather childish. But I do appreciate all the information
on records and the news about where and when she's performing. In
my opinion, news that Sinead O'Connor is going to be on Lollapalooza
is the first bit of information that has ever caused me interest
enough to attend the shebang. And I DO find all the comments in various
postings aboutwhat "kind" of people are attending, as well as all the
comments on Sinead's choices in every move she makes to be very judgmental.
But then nobody on this list is any more judgmental than the
rest of the human race, 99.9% of which seems to be caught up in
that sort of thing...

Hello everyone,

In response to Lisa (MLMCGXXXXXX@MSUVX1.MEMPHIS.EDU) who wrote aboute
Heroine and Captive:

A twelve inch single exists - I have it. On side A there is the "7''
Version" and Side B is called "Heroine (Mix II)" Both sound identical.
There is a credit that reads "Side A remixed by Steve Lillywhite"
eventhough it is side B that contains the "mix".
The single is dated 1986 and on the back are great pictures of Sinead and
The Edge. On the front there is a (side view) picture of a clip from the
movie, of the lead actress looking out a window. The single is nice to have
as a novelty item but I paid far, far too much for one great song - twice.
You can also purchace the whole soundtrack on CD, but again, you have to
really appreciate The Edge to get your money's worth.

Kevin

i think she patched up things with them. she has gotten rather
chummy with them lately hasn't she?

by the way the heroine song was released way back before the lion
and the cobra was released. it is off of a soundtrack by the edge for
the movie "the captive" great soundtrack. sinead only sings on the
theme song though (heroine) the rest is instrumental. it has been
rereleased so it should be pretty easy to find or order....

no you weren't mistaken. it is on the soundtrack, but there was
a 12" vinyl single that was released way back when. I do believe it even
predates sinead's work with world party, so it is sinead's first musical
work to be pressed.

i may be wrong about that though.

it is listed as "THE EDGE with sinead o'connor" on the front. i
don't remember what wsa on the bside was though, perhaps an instrumental
song from the soundtrack. i know it wasn't as sinead song.

and the CD of the captive was rereleased last summer.

There *is* such a list in the archive (which is currently
unavailable). It's presumably slightly out of date though.

I think Sinead may work with who ever she wants to work with. And so may
anyone else. And what comes to the Lollapalooza, I can only wait for a
miracle that one day Sinead would come to Finland...

It occurs to me that in explaining to "Matthias" in Europe what
Lollapalooza is about that I have ignored something important in
my pontifications about judgmentalness re: the people attending
Lollalalalala. The fact is that at shows attended by the teenage
to early 20s set (re: so-called "alternative" music acts) the
attendees do often behave in a rough, rude, self-obsessed manner
that makes it difficult for someone who grew up like I did -- sitting
down and listening to the performers -- to enjoy a concert without
feeling they are sitting on the floor of a bumper car ring about
to get bashed and battered. I don't know if Lollyla la is like this
but I do know from a tour bus driver that Woodstock revisited was like
that. Women were slung around like rag dolls into the mud there and
some didn't get back up.... The passing around of people like
volleyballs by audience members who lift people up above everyone's heads at
some "alternative" shows these days just shows how the current idea is to
ignore the performer and point at oneself in the audience ("I've just got to
participate too -- I can't just sit down and listen or dance along --
I have to be the show and draw attention to myself!!"). And the audience
likes to throw things at the performers -- at woodstock, it was mud balls,
elsewhere it's cans and the like...
The Hole show (Hole is also supposedly on Lolly's performance list)
here in Memphis was a good example of a bunch of self obsessed brats
watching a self obsessed brat who spent the wHole show whining about how
she could care less about being up there despite the sell-out crowd (so
why did you do the show, lady? go play where you prefer to and leave
my town alone) -- the audience members also threw ice and cups at the stage
as tho that's how to show appreciation...and C. Love spent the night
engaging in an immature psychodrama wrestling match with the audience.
So, perhaps Lollapalooza is like those kinds of shows, where you
feel like your blood pressure's going to rise from trying to avoid getting
hit by a falling human beach ball -- I don't know because I haven't been
to one. Given the things I've witnessed at other shows and heard about,
I can see why someone would have to think twice about going, so I guess
it's not so "judgmental" to have a negative view -- so long as that
view is not just based on uninformed prejudices against young people in
general....I can understand wishing for a more serene, spiritual
concert setting...instead of a combat zone..
If someone has been to a Lollapalooza show maybe you could tell
me what you saw....lisa

On second, third or fourth thought --
Lollapalooza is the kind of thing that probably will
come near where I live or in my city! I certainly would risk
being a human bumper car in a sea of pseudo-punks to get to
see Sinead here! I hope she does it, because I doubt she'll do
some solo tour that takes her here, tho I wish she would...

Well, in reply to lisa's post, i totally have to agree with her
even if she didn't go to lollopalooza. I went several years back and
although it wasn't as crazy or mainstream as it is now, the scene was
pretty much the same. In Chicago, lolly takes place at world music
theatre which has lawn seats in addition to normal seating. Although the
pavillion part isn't so bad, looking back at the lawn looked like one
big mud wrestling match. It was pathetic. People go around buying
everything with their mommy's credit card and looking out for chicks or
guys. All it is one big paty with people you don't know and don't want
to know. I do admit that i did go to one lolly but as long as i don't
take part in their pitiful joyride, it doesn't bother me much except for
the overpriced shitty food and drink and the long line for the bathroom
on usually a very sunny day.

I have considered to going again this year just because of miss
O'connor but seeing her at WOMAD was such a wonderful surprise that i may
be able to miss this crazy gala, better known as lollapaloza, and be ok
with it. As devastated as i am to know that ms. O'connor is taking part
in this overpriced, self absorbed, yuppie, mainstream festival, i can't
blame anyone for contributing to it because i did. So folks think twice
before you want to waste your hard earned money on this money market but
i guess we can't do anything about it. Perry Farrell needs to calm down
and come back to earth, he's only seeing $$-signs and not caring about
the authenticity of the very first Lollapalooza......

	.......just my opinion......Julie:)

I beg to differ! LPZA is the heart (IMHO) of the 'new' mainstream.
Someone is makeing big $$$ (which rules 'fringe' right out). In
N. american culture 'teen' is the center of the universe. Grunge (at
least where I live) is what LOTS of people are into. A huge crowd is
far from 'way-out'. I'd qualify the solar-powered show by rythm activism
I saw last summer on an anarchist squat as 'way-out'. But not a crowd of
10000.
But in a sens, loo-la-pelouza isn't as mainstream as lionel richie, but
I don't think Sinead needs to be THAT mainstream.

You know all this talk about whether or not lollapolossa is good
or not just strikes me as a waste of time.

As someone once said:

There is only two types of music. Good music and Bad music.

The quality of music is not inversly proportion
to how many people are listing to it at any one moment.

I like the conclusion of this statement, but the first part may
give Zen practitioners real shivers!

I really don't care about Lollapolooza myself...I know they can't
bring it to Hawaii...
