Warning - this is not totally Sinead related, but hopefully of interest
to some people out there...

Last night I saw Katell Keineg in L.A. (at Luna Park). Her music is a
little Sinead-like, with rising crescendos in the vocals and all, but
more guitar-folk based. She is also Irish, and was really fantastic. I
ended up meeting her after the show, and her manager, and they were
super nice people - if you're in L.A. she will be at Luna Park tonight
and at the Whisky (opening for David Gray and the Dave Matthews Band) on
Wednesday. Check her out!

but does anyone know why? Also are their plans for a new tour? One more
question, has anyone read or seen any recent interviews with her?

This has actually been out for a few weeks. The CD single release of "Thank You
For Hearing Me" is in two parts. Part 1 has the album versionn of "TYFHM," and
the 13 minnute remix of "Fire On Babylon." (This remix is HIGHLY recommended, I
think it's outstanding!) Part 2 has "Thank You For Hearing Me" and the three
songs she put on the American single for "Fire..." ("Streets of London," "I
Believe In You," and "The House Of The Rising Sun")

I would imagine this must be the original CD single released in the states.
Since there are four songs on it, it may well be considered an EP by some.

The Fire on Babylon remix is SO COOL!!!! I'ts on the CD single of
"Thank You For Hearing Me" (availlable only as an import here in the
USA) and is indeed 13 transcendent minutes long. It features an
Indian-style vocal, a really cool string line (not in the original) and
Sinead saying "I love you" at various intervals. This song is, like,
really, REALLY scary but for some sick, twisted reason I really dig it.

The remix of "Thief of Your Heart" is really cool too. It features
pounding percussion, lots of contrabass clarinet, and a scary rap like
only Sinead can do. These are two of her best songs in years.

I was listening to her third album again today (Am I Not Your Girl?) I
think "Don't Cry For Me, Argentina" is one of her finest moments. Move
over, Patti LuPone! It's too bad the critics weren't in to her very
'90s take on these songs. I think it's great to update these classic
songs, but it's definitely not for purists.

This is my first posting to this list and I think it's great. Let's get
some discussion going here! Surely Sinead fans must have loads of
controversial opinions.

This is from a review of the new Pearl Jam album in Rolling Stone magazine
that I thought had an interesting reference to Sinead:

It'a a sad paradox of these times that the artists who most successfully
express our fears and anxieties are the ones who are least able to cope
with the burdens of fame. Whether it's Sinead O'Conner, who masochistically
invites humiliation with public displays of emotional nakedness, or Kurt
Cobain, who finally just gave up, it's sometimes tempting to say what Frank
Sinatra once told George Michael - that is, "Stop complaining and enjoy
the ride."

*************************************************************************

Well, I don't think any artist 'invites humiliation', masochistically or
otherwise, but to offer to the public art which is on such a deeply personal
level, as Sinead certainly does, is certainly taking a risk. And I think an
artist must just hope that those who *get it* outnumber those who don't. And
for those who don't, well, they can follow Frank Sinatra's sage advice [gag!].

I think the way Sinead "invites humilition" is a wonderful example of
someone who isn't afraid to introduce the world to her immense and
terrifically strong emotions. Yeah it may be a risk, but she's lived a
complex life, full of struggles and emotional anguish. Women cry so do
men, every human being should be so self-assured to stand out in front of
their peers and display their most inner thoughts and emotions. I think
her critics should be pleased with her openess to admit her true
feelings.

"Masochistic" is such a negative word, it implies certain types of
pysical indangerment. I don't accuse Sinead of this, she simply has tried
to involve the public inside her anguish. I think other words would allow
people to better the true meaning behind Sinead's dramatics.

"Masochistic" is such a negative word, it implies certain types of
	pysical indangerment.

Technical note: I think of masochism as a more general thing:
inviting pain. Vis-a-vis the physical aspect, people into S&M
(classical masochists?) have 'safe words' so that in a sense
there is no real danger (modulo the level of trust). As a general
rule, I think the invitation is designed to avoid feeling some
more inner pain.

I don't accuse Sinead of this, she simply has tried
to involve the public inside her anguish. I think other
	words would allow
people to better the true meaning behind Sinead's dramatics.

My impression of Sinead is that she has invited pain by
exposing more than is necessary to embody her wonderful
talent, and the big issue is how she goes on from here.
I saw her 2nd song on (I assume a rerun) of the late night
show she was on recently, and was intrigued by how she has
evolved, returning to her intrinsic strengths as an artist
to demonstrate why she has a claim on our attention in the
first place. Physically she was so low-key in a matronly
sort of way that I felt I might be seeing the beginnings
of a grown-up person who will be able to deliver increasingly
facinating messages for a lifetime, without further public
scarrings and the resulting fear that she'll self-destruct.

Today's Boston Globe reports that Sinead will be doing a short tour in
early 1995. Nothing has been officially announced, but Boston is going
to be one of the stops (thanks Santa!).

She's expected to be in Boston in February.

Sinead also does vocals on two tracks for the Chieftans new album, due out
in January.

Well, with the year almost a memory, I thought I'd share my top 10 list
(especially considering Sinead came in at number 4).

10 Under the Pink Tori Amos
 9 Dream Corrosion Gary Numan
8 The Downward Spiral Nine Inch Nails
7 The Groove Won't Bite	Uncanny Alliance
 6 Bedtime Stories Madonna
5 The Cross of Changes Enigma
 4 Universal Mother Sinead O'Connor
 3 The Crow Soundtrack

Anybody got a top 10 list they want to share with the gang? It's great fun to
read them on another mailing list (ecto) I'm on.

Hi folks,

Well, it turns out that after much argument with myself _Universal_Mother_
came out at number six, pretty good if you consider the amount of CDs that I
waste my money on.

And now, with out further babbling, my Top 10 of 1994:

10. Dead Can Dance Toward the Within
 9. Nirvana Unplugged in New York
 8. Pearl Jam Vitalogy
 7. Peter Gabriel Secret World Live
 6. Sinead O'Connor Universal Mother
 5. Live Throwing Copper
 4. Concrete Blonde Still In Hollywood
 3. They Might Be Giants John Henry
 2. Nine Inch Nails The Downward Spiral

and finally, my number one is *by far*....

 1. Sarah McLachlan Fumbling Towards Ecstacy

Okay, okay....that last one was released officially in (late) 1993....but
it's still my number one. If the Sisters of Mercy had released anything in
'94 it would be #1 by definition, but no such luck. Now that I think about
it, four of those are compilations or live albums...go figure...

=o= I'll eschew the tired, overly-hyped descending Letterman Top
Ten format in favor of the tired, overly-hyped ascending Desert
Island Disk Top Ten format.

 1. Beck -- Mellow Gold
 2. Beastie Boys -- Ill Communication (and remix CD singles)
 3. Sinead O'Connor -- Universal Mother (and remix CD singles)
 4. Weezer
 5. Tori Amos
 6. Nirvana -- Unplugged in New York
 7. Beatles -- The BBC Tapes
 8. Jello Biafra and Mojo Nixon -- Prairie Home Invasion
 9. Sisters of Mercys -- Greatest Hits!!!!!!!
10. Soundgarden

=o= And here's my bottom ten for the year:

 1. Counting Crows -- Not an original riff or even note on the album.
 2. Eagles -- Puhleezeee!
 3. Rolling Stones -- Give us a break!
 4. Aerosmith -- Videos top-heavy with models don't update the rehashes.
 5. Green Day -- These guys would have been original a decade ago.
 6. Nine Inch Nails -- Boring as hell without Adrian Sherwood.
 7. Barenaked Ladies -- They were *geniuses* just a year ago?!?!?!?
 8. Deee-Lite -- They were *geniuses* just two albums ago?!?!?!?
 9. Snoop Doggy Dogg -- Sold 37 tickets at his last show. Good.
10. All "Gangsta" Rap -- It was way tired back when it started.

=o= This is the first year in aeons in which a hiphop album
hasn't appeared on the top ten. :-(

Something has been surprising me on the lists: a few o' my
countrypeople have been showing up!

Lee, from Cleveland mentioned Loreena McKennitt, who just happens to
live down the road from my home town - I thought she was a local phenomenon!?
And, shock of shocks, even Ziad from _San Jose_ has Sarah McLachlan as his
#1: her Fumbling CD is an excellent release which I recommend to all on this
list.... For something newer from this Canadian, look for her album of
re-releases, which came out either November or December this year.

Well Sam, you get to read my list twice. I guess it's not as off-topic as I
deluded myself into thinking.

I think this time I'll follow the DID format as well...

 1. Talitha MacKenzie, "Solas"
-- traditional Scottish mouth music set to pop music
 2. Freedy Johnston, "This Perfect World"
-- singer/songwriter ala Elvis Costello, Bob Dylan
 3. Harry Connick, Jr., "She"
    -- New Orleans rock from a Sinatra-wannabe :-)
 4. Kronos Quartet, "Night Prayers"
-- The most intense 78 minutes you'll ever experience on disc
 5. Guided by Voices, "Bee Thousand"
-- Rock 'n' roll, short and simple
 6. killer kiwis, "The Right Hat Is No Hat"
-- Check out their page on the IUMA (http://iuma.com/)
 7. Sinead O'Connor, "Universal Mother"
 8. Soundgarden, "Superunknown"
 9. Naked City, "Absinthe"
-- Ambient electronic music ala Edgar Varese and Milton Babbitt
10. Anonymous 4, "Love's Illusion"
-- Vocal music from 13th Century Montpellier codex

Honorable mention:

Richard Shindell, "Sparrow's Point"
-- a 1992 album I didn't discover til this year.
Mouth Music, "Mouth Music"
-- Talitha MacKenzie's starting point
Wolfstone, "Year of the Dog"
-- Celtic music + arena rock ala Journey doesn't sound too bad...
Bill Frisell, "This Land"
Pigpen, "Halfrack"
Frank Zappa, "The Yellow Shark"
Sting, "The Best of Sting"
