Hmm. Well, I read -- and like -- Pulse because they aren't afraid to
pan musicians that are usually flame retardant. Not only that, they're
rather good at covering a lot of genres.

I agree that the Sinead review is obviously biased, but it's one reviewer's
opinion against many.

The Rolling Stone review is much more positive, but the same criticisms
that appear in Schinder's review (the politics, the self-pity) show up
there as well. Still, RS gave the album 3 1/2 stars (or was it 4?) and
said that the album works well because of its inconsistencies. (I buy
RS on an issue-by-issue basis and am paraphrasing the RS review by
memory. Maybe a regular RS reader should transcribe the article for
better reference.)

                            SINAD O'CONNOR
                           Universal Mother
                              Virgin/EMI

                                  by
                              PERRY STERN

Sinad O'Connor possesses a prodigious talent. Her voice and ability
to make it soar heavenward with apparent ease then let it flutter
back to earth, without the slightest diminution of emotional impact,
is hardly less than a miracle. Any opportunity to enjoy that talent --
particularly in a live context -- should be seized, then marvelled
over, because no one can wrench more power out of a song than she.
On Universal Mother, O'Connor displays her singing and songwriting
abilities perhaps better than on any of her previous three albums.
She also makes her audience work more for its pleasure.

In the liner notes, O'Connor suggests that the album "can be best
appreciated" when listened to in its entirety and on headphones.
She's absolutely right. As a set piece the album is almost an opera
about a woman -- a mother -- in Ireland who wrangles with her role
in a society rife with evil but littered with an abundance of love.
She loves her child ("My Darling Child"), loves the father of her child
("John I Love You"), loves the god that made the child ("All Babies"),
but hates that god's church ("Fire In Babylon") and fears the world
that church has made. On "Famine," O'Connor offers nothing less than
a spoken history lesson/therapy session on the state of Ireland's
health.

This is most definitely not an album to throw on while doing
housework or hosting dinner parties. Nor will it offer up singles
(other than the atypically martial pomp of "Fire In Babylon") for
radio fodder. It really is best listened to tethered to the stereo,
perhaps even in a dark room, where you can spend 50 uninterrupted
minutes listening to O'Connor's lovely voice and thinking about what
she's singing about. But for the previously mentioned exception,
Universal Mother is an exceedingly personal and quiet album. Mostly
arranged for voice and piano/keyboards, the songs are eerie in their
openness.

Of course some will regard this record as the worst kind of navel-
gazing, all wrapped up in one 27-year-old's obsession with analyzing
her all-too-eventful life. But listen to her adamant declaration of
independence on "Red Football" followed by the morose resignation
of Nirvana's "All Apologies" and once again you find yourself allied
with her, regardless of how many injudicious statements she makes
to the press or how many pictures of the Pope she rips up. Universal
Mother is not a pop record that you can recommend simply for pure
musical enjoyment, but it is the kind that sounds awfully damn good,
while, more importantly, making you think and feel. -- PERRY STERN

The October 8, 1994 issue shows UNIVERSAL MOTHER:

#19 (up from 22) on the 1-Oct "Hits of the UK/Hits of the World"
#19 (NEW) on the Canadian Album chart
#47 (up from 36) in its 2nd week on the Billboard 200 Albums

Plus Friday morning, I did wake up to a song from the album playing on
WXRT here in Chicago. Tho I call them 'mainstream alternative', that's
encouraging.

P.S. Rat - thanx for that review!

If you wouldn't mind Ziad could you post the "article"? Since I moved
up to Buffalo I haven't seen a Tower Records in a while. I guess I
should introduce myself (since I'm a newbee here) Hello all!!!

My name is Eric, I'm going to school up at Buffalo State, but I'm
from Long Island. I'm also (what a shock) a HUUGGGEEE lover of Sinead.
I'm looking to trade item's and so forth with others. I have the Lion
and the Cage (a bootleg of a live concert somewhere in Europe), two books
writen about her, all her video tapes, and quite a few magazine articles.
I'm looking for Sinead's acting debut on TV "Hush a bye baby" I think it
was called, it was an English after school special kinda thing. If
anyone has any information where I can get a copy or wants to find out
more about my stuff my E-Mail is: GRUTTE09@SNYBUFAA.CS.SNYBUF.EDU

I don't know what was talked about so far so forgive me if I repeat
something that was writen before but did anyone read the article in Q
I think it was last months, They had a nice long article/interview
talking about her folks and her suicide attempt. There is also
a couple of picture with her wearing an Irish Princess shirt.

Thanks alot folks, hope to be hearing from ya soon!

As best as I remember, my Cranberries CD cost just as stinking much as any
Sinead CD I've bought!

Come on. The industry has a lot of very talented musicians in it. To say
that one group or singer isn't valid as themself because they emulate the
styles or ideals of another group or singer- is pretty closed minded and
just lame. In case you haven't been around most of the outside world, I
would even dare say the majority of people in listening distance of music
as a generality would not support much validity on the part of pretty much
anything Sinead has ever done.

Grow up a little here. If another band is supporting what styles or ideals
you already appreciate and is doing it in a non-plagiarizing and quality
way, isn't that pretty cool in itself just for the sake of variety at least
by name in your collection?

I believe this is where the disagreement lies. I wouldn't exactly say that
the Cranberries are 'non-plagiarizing'. Besides the obvious copycat look,
the vocals are nothing short of Sinead imitations.

Take the Cranberries new single (please!) "Zombie". The very last part of
the song where Delores blatantly rips off "Troy". It's hard to describe
which part since it's not actually words being sung, but it's a definite
Sinead-like moan, if you will.

Before I'm labeled as being one of those 'Sinead is all that matters' types,
think again. I do not use Sinead as the yardstick for all other artists.
If that artist is blatantly using the same sound and look however, I feel
like I can use that comparison.

And yes, I have plenty of variety in my collection without the Cranberries.
If you want 'non-plagiarizing and quality' then I recommend Sarah McLachlan.

I agree with Andrew in that the phrase "poor man's Sinead" is a totally
lame statement. I've heard it on this list a few times, and it pisses me
off. So, what would Sinead be, then...a poor man's Maria Callas? Do we
boycott everything coming out of Ireland that isn't Sinead? (Not that
Maria Callas is Irish.) Must we be so quickly derogatory? Does an artist
necessarily have to become engaged with the political environment
surrounding him/her? I found the music of the Cranberries to be
successfully enriching without their political opinions thrust into the
heart of it.

Hmm. Didn't know I signed on to a Cranberries Flame list...

I think this entire Sinead vs. Cranberries argument is pointless. The
music industry masturbates on a trend til it's no longer
profitable. This so-called "alternative music" - which, unfortunately,
Sinead is considered to be apart of since she didn't fit into the cookie-
cutter girl groups of the late 80's - is one such trend. The Cranberries,
IMO, sound like the Sundays who sound like the Cocteau Twins who
sound like...

If history repeats itself, the music industry is nothing more than a
scratched record playing at 78 RPM. Anybody remember Stone Temple Pilots
(Pearl Jam)? Chuck Berry (Louis Jordan)? Blanesceau Quartet (Kronos
Quartet)?

#Take the Cranberries new single (please!) "Zombie". The very last part of
#the song where Delores blatantly rips off "Troy". It's hard to describe
#which part since it's not actually words being sung, but it's a definite
  #Sinead-like moan, if you will.

I think the Cranberries sound much more like the Sundays, if you're
going to pigeonhole them... But this whole vilification of the
Cranberries for the mortal sin of copying Sinead is really stupid.
Music is all about taking what you like from someone else's style and
integrating it into your own. I'm sure if we looked hard enough we
could find some of Sinead's inspirations, and where she borrowed
material or technique from them. If you don't like the Cranberries,
fine. Just stop with this "oh my god it's a blatant ripoff!" Even if
it is, just acknowledge the fact that the Cranberries are "heavily
influenced" by the music of Sinead, and get over it.

The Glory Of Gershwin has _finally_ been released in the US.

For those who don't know, this is a compilation by various artists in
tribute of Larry Adler's 80th birthday (they all cover Gershwin songs).
The cd was released on Mercury (314 526 091-2).

Peter Gabriel contributes "Summertime".
Sting contributes "Nice Work If You Can Get It."
Sinead O'Connor contributes "My Man's Gone Now."

Being fairly new to the list, don't know if this was passed along before ...

The new Dara compilation of women Irish artistes, "A Woman's Heart 2"
(a.k.a. A Woman's Heart - the sequel) adds Sinead O'Connor, Mary
Coughlan, Maighread Ni Dhomhnaill and Sinead Lohan to 5 of the 6 women
from the first compilation. Sinead O'C is represented by "Three Babies"
from "I Do Not Want What I Have Not Got"

Sinead's new album shows up in several charts in BILLBOARD
this week (cover date 15-October):

Canada/Albums: at #13, up from #19
Ireland/Albums: even at #5
UK/Albums: down to #28 from #19

But - the most interesting was the appearance of "Fire on Babylon"
at #25 on a Japanese TOKIO Hits! singles chart

====
HOT PRESS (5 October) has a half-page review of the album by Bill Graham.
Quite even-handed, and positive on the whole. Too long to type in here
(er, too long for my abyssmal data entry), but a few parts of the opening
& closings

"One could easily give Universal Mother another title. Not "Boy" but
"Girl" - as performed by Yoko Ono and the Plastic Ono Band, and doubtless
on the Mother label! It's definitely the record of an artist determined
to restart, with a totally new set of basic principles?

he recaps the diverse opinions of Andy Gill in the "Independent"
(negative/critical) and Caroline Sullivan in "The Guardian" (topping 9
others as best for the week).

he generally praises the spare style, lack of pretense, and consistency of
the album.

closing comments:

"Universal Mother" is totally Irish in its refusal to fiddle around with
the dictates of fashion and take the easy ironic route out of its dilemma
& contradictions, for Sinead O'Connor remains an artistic Romantic,
utterly incapable of being playful with her confusions. Sometimes a lack
of craft handicaps her and the intensity of her singing breaks the banks
of the frailer songs but there is also an art in her artlessness; her
instincts do reach the emotional nerves others can't touch.

... But at 27, she's still desparately determined to have the answers; she
isn't yet content to live with just the questions.

====
Last night when I had my latest 'spending accident' at Tower, I picked up
the EP for "Fire On Babylon". I liked the covers of the 'oldies' I
remember from folk guitar class - but was kinda annoyed at the low level
of sound she starts out with on "Streets of London" - it seemed to be
inconsistent with the volume of the preceding songs. Course, this was on
headphones at work, and I imagine it's a lot better on the 'real stereo'.
But - I can't remember - are "House of the Rising Sun" or "Streets of
London" on one of her albums? (other than "Lion & Cobra" or "I Do Not Want
...")

This review was of Universal Mother appears in the Oct.1994 issue of
Masemoiselle. I was relieved to finally find a somewhat positive published
review. I think it's true that so many people discredit her music and talent because of
because of her personal life. I know that life is reflected in art but
sometimes we must forget our personal predjudices and look at the art apart
from the lifestyles, actions, beliefs, and values of the artist.

Anyway, here is the review:
If only she'd never torn up that picture of the pope.
Maybe then Sinead wouldn't have filled her fourth
release with so many songs about feeling hurt and
misunderstood. But being thinskinned must inspire
beautiful music: Her love songs and lullabies-
including a poignant cover of Nirvana's "All Apologies"-
are genuinely moving, delivered with just piano and
her pure voice. Only a grouch could hold a grudge
against someone who asks for understanding with such sweet sounds."

Kimberly,
Chicago.

Oh by the way..."thinskinned"???????????????????????????????????????????

Hello, people in jitr!

Some time ago I received the following message from JITR:

>Just out of curiosity:
>
>How many people on this list a) want to be in a band or b) are in a
>band? (In any band, not necessarily a band formed from the members of
>the jitr mailing group...)
>

Well, I am sorry for the delay, but I would like you to know:
I am in a band.
Or... better, I was in a band; I don't actually know if I am now, as
we are not playing since we lost our drummer, some months ago.
We played some sort of 'fusion', but not so near to jazz, and none of
the members is in the jitr (no-one but me, of course).
The band was:
- acoustic, electric and processed guitar
- MIDI guitar/synthesizer and electric guitar
- all basses (that's me)
- drums, percussion and noises
We are not real professional, I mean we have a job and then we play
if we have some time left; all the same, we were able to perform
several shows, and some good ones too.
Now I am trying to put them together once more, find a new drummer
and start playing again; meanwhile, I am setting up my little home
studio in order to be able to produce some recorded music, alone or
with the band.
I don't know if there is something interested in it, as it has almost
nothing to do with the jitr mailing list, but if someone asks,
I answer, so...
my name is Paolo, and I live in Genova, Italy.
I think it's enough for now. but should anyone reply ...

see you all soon on jitr.
Bye.

			Paolo

Did anybody else see Sinead on the Danny Baker Show on BBC1 Saturday
night?

She did two songs - 'House of the Rising Sun' and 'Thank You for
Hearing Me' which was quite a surprise, normally TV performances are of
the single only. She looked ever so pleased at the reception she got -
with that slightly surprised "Oh God, they like me" little smile.

Sinead is scheduled to make two (count 'em, two!) TV appearances in the US
next week. On Monday (10/31) she will appear on the Late Show with David
Letterman and on Thursday (11/3) she will be on the Jon Stewart Show.
She will most likely only be performing. Letterman rarely interviews
musical guests. I don't know about Jon Stewart. Get them VCR's ready!
