Hey All,

I hope Sinead doesnt ruin her voice, too bad I
cant say the same for MAriah Barely. Look at Sinead
when she sings... those veins popping out of her neck
aren't a good sign!! I cant wait to hear her rendition
of jAll Apologies.

Dave

Although I didn't hear it, I heard that WFNX in Boston has begun playing
a new Sinead song. I assume it's a song from the new album, but since
I heard this info second hand I can't say for sure. Has anyone heard
a new Sinead song recently? I know she's on a few new compilations too,
so it may also be from one of those.

Was something posted on this list about the "In Concert" show that will
have Sinead on with Van Morrison and Elvis Costello? If not, I'll dig
up the date. The show is on every Thursday night at 9:00 EST on A&E.

These are the lyrics to "All Babies" which looks as if it will be on the
new album. They might've changed a bit.
A Melody Maker review of the album follows.

All Babies
All babies are born the same in God's name,
over and over the same in God's name.
All babies are flown through the universe,
from there they are lifted by the hands of angels.
God gives them the stars to use as lanterns.
She gives their pulse. She is mother and fa ther.
All babies are born out of great pain,
over and over all born into great pain.
All babies are crying,
for no one remembers God's name.
(insert musical "oh"-ing here for two lines)

repeat once from beginning then

coda: There's only love
      there's only love
there's only love in this world.

As far as I know, all lyrics are Sinead's.
It's extremely simple, with one main melody and two chords. Just beautiful.

Excerpt of Melody Maker July 16, 1994
"Sinead O'Connor has become the first artist of note to record a Nirvana song
since the death of Kurt Cobain in April, The Maker's Eugene Masterson can
exclusivelyh reveal.
Sinead has recorded an acoustic version of "All Apologies" on her
explosive new album, "Universal Mother". The album also features cameo
appearances from pioneering feminist Germaine Greer and Sinead's own son, Jake.
It's not known whether Sinead recorded "All Apologies" before or after
Kurt Cobain's death. It appears as the fifth track on the LP.
The album will be released on September 15 -- The Day Of Atonement, a
religious date which recognises the reconciliation of man with God throught
the life, sufferings and sacrificial death of Christ. The album has religious,
family and feminist themes at its core.
Sinead refers to God as "She" in the song "All Babies". There is also a
track, "Famine", which deals with the Irish potato blight in 1847, during which
more than a million people died of starvation, and another million fled from
Ireland, mainly to America.
"Famine" features a refrain from the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby": "All the
lonely people/Where do they all come from?/All the lonely people/Where do they
all belong?"
The album is predominantly acoustic with many ballads, a hip hop number
and a slow dance track.
Her son, Jake, is credited with writing the song, "Am I Human?", which
he sings in a soft, child-like voice. The lyrics run: "Am I human?/It's very
good/Maybe I am/It's very nice/The feelings in me/And the fire/keeps me warm."
On other tracks on the album,, Sinead refers to the differences be-
tween paternity, maternity and fraternity, and how women should assert them-
selves more. "Fire On Babylon" is scheduled to be the first single from the
album. It's a slow ballad that deals with Sinead's turbulent upbringing. One
line runs: "I watched her torturing my child." The song starts off with a
trumpet while a thundering drum beat constantly shudders throughout. Sinead
almost cries as her voice dwells several times on the letters "F-I-R-E".
Another ballad on the album refers to her love for her husband and the
father of her child, John Reynolds. The lyrics read: "John I love you/I'm
ever so fond of you/Will you wait for me?/'Til I am heavenly/Oh there's so
much work to do/But I love you."
On the next song, "My Darling Child", Sinead is accompanied by just a
piano, joined towards the end by a violin.
The next track, "Red Football", deals Sinead's relationship with the
outside world, particularly the media. Some lyrics run: "I'm not no red foot-
ball to be kicked around the garden/No, no/I'm a red Christmas tree ball/And
I'm fragile/I'm not no animal/Though I am to you."
Co-producer Phil Coulter, the man who wrote "Congratulations" for
Cliff Richard, has penned a song, "Scorn not his simplicity", and he plays
piano on the track.
"Famine" is the most innovative song on the album, built around a slow
hip hop beat which brings to mind "Irish Ways And Irish Laws", her collabor-
ation with Marxman.
Sinead points out in the song that the Enlish Governor gave money to
Irish parents not to teach their children their native Gaelic tongue. She
then claims Ireland has the highest level of child abuse in Europe, and adds
that the Irish people are suffering from "post traumatic stress disorder."
The lyrics run: "Look at all our old men in the pubs/Look at all our young
people on drugs/We used to worship God as a mother/Now look what they're doing
to each other."
Three weeks ago, Sinead called the Maker to tell us the album was
"f***ing brilliant". She said that this time round she wanted the music to do
the talking. The controversial nature of much of the content of "Universal
Mother" does just that.
Full tracklisting for the album is: "Fire On Babylon", "John, I Love
You", "My Darling Child", "Am I Human?", "Red Football", "All Apologies", "A
Perfect Indian", "Scorn Not His Simplicity", "All Babies", "In This Heart",
"Tiny Grief Song", "Famine" and "Thank You For Hearing Me".
end quote

They also mention "No Prima Donna -- The Songs of Van Morrison" which
is supposed to be out Aug 1 in GBR.

Hey All,

In US Magazine from 9/94, there is an article about
Fall releases. They have a little write up about Sinead... so
here it is... (The cover has 12+ celebs on it)

"SINEAD O'CONNOR, her Pope picutre-ripping days
apparently behind her, explores the joys and sorrows of
raising kids on UNIVERSAL MOTHER. "People have a perception
of Sinead as being full of anger," says Phil Coulter, one
of the producers. "The album shows a gentler, tender side."
(So it's no coincidence that she performs an acoustic version
of Kurt Cobains "All Apologies.")(September)

Enjoy!!

Hi,

I bought an Europe release (Ensign Records, London) of
the first Sinead album "Lion and the cobra" and I noticed
that the cover is different from the US release. In the
Europe release, Sinead is photographed singing loud, her
face turned to the left (in contrast to US version).

  Just my 2 cents.

In reference to Sundara's post, I bought a copy of TLATC in Australia with the

cover she described, though I see her more as yelling

                                                     than singing. Probably the

First of all, I wanted to let folks know that there are four (!) new
pictures of Sinead in the archive on net.bio.net (anonymous FTP;
directory misc/jitr). They are both JPEG format. The first two are
courtesy of Tim Brannan of Southern Illinois University, and the second
two are courtesy of Frank Hollis of SB Pharm in the UK. Thanks, Tim
and Frank!

File name Size Description
--------- ----- -----------
sinead-peter-sting.jpg	44015 Sinead, Peter Gabriel, and Sting, 1992
sinead-sings.jpg	20404 Sinead in concert, Netherlands

sinead1q.jpg 39702 Sinead in Q Magazine, UK, 8/94
sinead2q.jpg 46644 Sinead in Q Magazine, UK, 8/94

Secondly, I wanted to advise people that the list will probably be
moving off presto.ig.com in the very near future, to my own domain
(postmodern.com). At that time it will probably become a Majordomo
list. This is good news and bad news; the good news is that the
machine will be under my control and problems can be fixed really
quickly (I used to manage the department that administered
presto.ig.com, but left the company about 8 months ago). The bad news
is that the net connection will be slower-speed and possibly less
stable. Hopefully this will not be a problem. And Majordomo will
make list requests much less painful, and also filter out those
annoying "unsubscribe" messages that get sent to the list.

The archives may or may not move. More on all of this later.

One last thing -- presto.ig.com itself is supposed to be upgraded this
weekend, meaning JITR may be off the air for a day or two if there are
any problems.

Cheers,

It b-sides I believe in you from Very Special Xmas 2. The
song is called Fire on Babylon (or smth like that). It mentions
family situations in it & on the back is the art-work cover
of universal mother!! I found it at Tower Records in Paramus, NJ
for $6!! Good luck finding it!!

First of all, I wanted to let folks know that there are four (!) new
pictures of Sinead in the archive on net.bio.net (anonymous FTP;
directory misc/jitr).

Cheers,
--

For anyone who didn't hear the single yet, I transcribed the lyrics last night.
Brackets ([]) around phrases indicate that I'm not certain I have the phrase
correct.

Fire On Babylon

She took my father from life, oh
Took my sister and brothers, oh oh oh
I watched her torturing my child
[Even I was there but now I'm gone]
Fire on Babylon
Oh yes, a change has come
Fire on Babylon
Fire Fire Fire

She's taken everything I liked
She's taken every lover, oh oh oh
And all along she gave me lies
Just to make me think I loved her
Fire on Babylon
Oh yes, a change has come
Look what she did to her son
Fire Fire Fire on

Life's backwards, life's backwards
People turn around
The house is burnt, the house is burnt
The children are gone
Fire Fire
Fire on Babylon
Oh yes, a change has come
Fire on Babylon
Fire Fire Fire

Fire on Babylon
Oh yes, a change has come
Look what she did to her son
Look what she did to her son
Fire Fire

Fire Fire Fire
Fire on Babylon
Fire on Babylon

The Melody Maker article had referred to this song as a "ballad."
Well, I don't think so. It's got kind of a mild dance groove. And it's pretty
biting and angry, so I'd describe it as something more uptempo. My first
impression was good, but after I listened to it three times I loved it! Part
of it reminds me a bit of moments from _The Lion And The Cobra_ (not anything
specific, just a general emotional thing), and the music just before the
"life's backwards" section made me think of something from side one of _I Do
Not Want What I Haven't Got_ (embarrassingly, I've forgotten the name of the
song). Does anyone in the UK know of any mixes that are (or will be) available?

The other three songs are more along the lines of what I call
"ballads." In "The House Of The Rising Sun," she chooses to begin the song
very softly (almost inaudibly, depending on what level you have the sound at),
and then gradually increases volume. "I Believe In You" is terrific, as is
"The Streets Of London" (which was my favorite of the B-sides).

Well, that's my opinion, anyway. She's still the greatest!

-Sam

Hi,

well, I got it too yesterday, and I think it's excellent. Is it me, or has
her voice improved dramatically? FOB is haunting, and its groove is really
hypnotic. The B-sides are also very good.

I also picked up the September issue of Q, which features Sinead's 'FINAL'
interview, and a faxed letter where she explains why she won't be giving
more interviews. Check it out.

Hey guys.

i'm new hear so thanks for signing me up and letting me join the circle.

I heard Fire on Babylon two nights ago for the first time. I was completely
impressed and once again her voice and lyrics are beautifully haunting.

The new full length CD will be out on Sept. 15....for me, that's the day
after payday so i will be running directly to the record store.

I saw a few import e.p.s at a small record store nearby, hopefully i can go
check those out too...i'll keep you posted as to what i find...as soon as i
get my hands on them. (by nearby i mean Chicago, that is where i am).

kimberly.

I heard Sinead's version of "All Apologies" last night and I have to say
that I was really disappointed. It lacked the emotion that I was expecting
it to have. We all know what she can do when she puts her heart into
something. It just seemed like a token gesture to Kurt Cobain to
record it. Perhaps it'll grow on me, but I still prefer the original.
I can't wait to hear her version of "House of the Rising Sun" though!

THe new single is also going to take some time to grow on me. I assume it
will, but as of right now it doesn't strike me. The entire second album
struck me the same way though. It took a long time for the album to
really strike a chord with me, but when it did I couldn't believe what
I was hearing. Perhaps this will be the case this time too. I hope so.

I was trying to fill out my Sinead collection this weekend, so I got _Peace
Together_ and Jah Wobble's _Rising Above Bedlam_. The Jah Wobble album is
terrific! I really like his stuff. I'm wondering now, does anyone here have
the latest album (_Becoming God_?), and if so, how does it compare to _Rising
Above Bedlam_?

Also, does anyone out there have the CD single for "Ungodly Kingdom?" Sinead
sings lead vocals for a song called "Josey Walsh." If anyone is willing to
part with this (CD only, please), Email me. Thanks.

Jah Wobble's new album is terrific too. It's much in the same style as
'Rising above Bedlam', without Sinead though. It's a very well engineered
album, lots of things are going on. The songs are brilliant, both music and
lyrics.
Don't miss to see him live if you have the opportunity.
The 'Ungodly Kingdom' CD single is worth buying, not just for Sinead's
contribution but for all the songs on it. I have got it but don't want to
give it away.

Matthias.
PS: 'House of the Rising Sun' is terrific. Finally Sinead got round to cover
2 of my favourite classics.

Hey, since i'm new at this i don't know what information you all already have
but i don't want you to miss anything. This is a very old release and you've
all probably heard it but for those who haven't, you MUST check out the album
*Mind Bomb* by The The. Sinead sings along on "Kingdom of Rain". I cried
the first time i heard this emotion filled "conversation" between man and
woman...husband and wife...as they come to terms with the fact that they do
not love each other anymore.

this song sounds best on a good stereo system, in the dark...or on a walkman.
the storm in the intro moves around you, engulfs you, and you can actually
loose touch with the reality around you for the duration of the song. The
song becomes reality.

I heard the new cover on our local alternative-mega-station 99X about two
weeks ago. The DJ said it was sent to them directly from Ireland.

My impression was that it was quite similar in style to Frente! although I
did not like it as much as I like Frente! themselves. Coincidentally I
then heard about 20 minutes later on our college radio station (GA State)
a Frente! single (I don't remember which one) which was good for
comparison. Then about ten minutes later, they played a newly released
version of All Apologies from Nirvana itself. I love all the Nirvana versions
I have heard so far. The Sinead version is okay, but I did not think the
treatment really added much in the experience of hearing it for me.

The new single is available at Tower here, but I have not bought it or
heard it yet on the radio. I'm very excited about the new album, it will
be bought ASAP, although I do not have anything to play it on right now
since my recent move left me receiver-less.

Happy listening!

Jeremy

I forgot to mention this last week, but I was wondering if anyone else
has heard this news. WFNX in Boston reported that Sinead checked in to
a rehab center in London last week. It was unknown whether it was drug
or alcohol (or both) related. Has anyone else heard this?

It wouldn't actually surprise me considering the things she's gone through.
If it is true, at least she's doing something about it.

Subject: Acoustic Version
Status: OR

Hello!

I read in "Feel So Different" that Sinead sang an acoustic version of
"Troy" at some concerts. Has anyone heard it? I've only heard her
once in concert, and she didn't sing it at all.

Thanks,

Amy

These came from today's BOSTON GLOBE.

Names and Faces:

Sinead O'Connor is in a London rehab facility known for getting
celebrities to shake drug and alcohol additions. Apparently the Irish
singer entered the $500-a-day Priory Hospital after deciding that
constant marijuana use was sapping her creativity. O'Connor, 27,
disclosed she had two abortions within 18 months following affairs
with married men, and last year she was saved by Peter Gabriel, who
found her comatose after a suicide attempt using pills and alcohol.

Literary Life:

With a fourth album on the way, Sinead O'Connor is back in the media
loop with torrid tales of her own private Troubles. Unable to censor
herself, the fragile banshee on rock'n'roll twists up a joint and does
the very bitter bard thing with England's sharp "Q" magazine. "Child
abuse is the source of all our problems" and "Ireland is like a child
that's been battered", she says, regaling writer Phil Sutcliffe with
details of her own bruised youth: "One thing [my mother] did regularly
was make me take off all my clothes and force me to lie on the floor
and she would stamp on my abdomen with the intention of bursting my
womb. That's what she said, 'I'm going to burst you'."

Thanks for the post to eliz! She talked about using marijuana in the Q
interview, so the Globe article sounds right.

BTW, the Q article is really great. Check it out!

Angelos
PS. Let's hope that after the rehab she will decide to tour to promote
Universal Mother.
