although she hasn't got much more hair than Sinead ;-)

You know, I could never really fancy the Sinead comparrisons to the
Cranberries. Yes, they're both from Ireland. But Dolores sounds more
like a cross between Juliana Hatfield, Tanya Donnely (or Kristen Hirsch),
with a touch of Sarah McClachlan -- all of them Yanks save for Sarah
who's Canadian.

Personal choice, I guess. Or maybe I just confused them all when their
hits were big on the alternative charts...

Here's the Sinead content...

I've never been quite so devoted to Sinead to collect all her recordings.
Yet since a new Sinead album isn't near on the horizon, so to speak, I
was wondering which of her "one-off" projects are worth picking up.
That is, single tracks on those various artist compilations. What would
Sinead collectors recommend?

Was this new Jah Wobble album ever released? I haven't seen anything
of it in the USA. I called the record label and they said they released
a re-issue of some older stuff, but they didn't handle Jah anymore. Is
there a new Jah Wobble album out in the UK or have I been badly misinformed?

Single recommendations:

My Special Child - one of her best songs
Three Babies - two otherwise unreleased songs + a live version of Troy

Also Jah Wobble's last album 'Rising above Bedlam' is a good buy - not just
for the two Sinead tracks.

Hey All,

Okay here are the 2 Sinead biographies that I have...

_So Different_ by Dermott Hayes. This has a cool cover of Sinead
turning her head looking anywhere but at the camera. I ordered
this one, but I later found it at Tower Records in Paramus NJ.
I can find 2 places that sell it via mail order. If anybody
wants these addresses let me know & I shall post.

_Sinead: Her Life and Her Music_ (oder auf deutsch: _Sinead
O'Connor: Ihr Leben und Ihre Musik_) by Jimmy Gutterman. I
originally bought the german version while in Europe in '92.
This has a reddish cover. I ordered the english version thru
Encore books. They are nation wide & should be able to get it
for y'all. This was publushed by Goldmann. It has some good
photos, but I perfer the photos of _So Different_. _SD_ was
published by Omnibus Press.

On my radio show yesterday (only college radio) the
first song I played was thief of your heart. I bought a
promo sampler in NJ & it is intended for stores to play &
it has 8 tracks, but the Bono & Sinead songs are on the
CD twice to promote these singles.... ANYWAY.... I totally
plugged the CD/OST & the song. I even said she should be
Pope! A lady called me during the song & wanted more details.
That rarely happens. Also I read the review of this single
in the last Billboard mag of Mar. It was under single reviews
in the rock tracks catagory. They totally loved the song there!

Oh well, sorry this was so long.

I forgot to mention movies... during my break I
rented My Own Private Idaho (wieeeeeeeeeeerd!) with
Kenau Reeves, River Phoenix & Flea. Anyway, in the first
20 min, they mentioned Sinead playing a show in Seatle &
they referred to her as the "bald singer" or something.

Oh well.

Hang on its not as desperate as it sounds, it was reported yesterday
in a English newspaper that Sinead has recently been seen in the High
Court in London watching the proceedings of the case between George
Michael and Sony Music.

I wonder why.

Its a bit boring I know but I felt I had to write something.

I'm sickstuffed with Cranberries--Glee Club's a nice alternative. Favorite
S.O. guest track is with Jah Wobble, "JOSEY WALSH" (Ungodly Kingdom EP)
"DAMN YOUR EYES" (3 babies single) is also a favorite although not on
someone else's recording. Same for the Karen Finley duet for "JITR"
If you're really looking for "TROY"ish experimentality, check out a duo on
Kill Rock Stars in Seattle, they call themselves Tattle Tale. Well worth a
phone order. Simple, passionate music.
Marxman is going to be distributed (finally) in the U.S. btw on
A&M Records.
Also, if anybody's interested in trading video stuff, mail me, I've
got quite a lot myself.
Someone was asking about seeing shows at all... I went to the last
SNL. Wow! And nobody ever really answered about the St. Marks Place
incident post-Dylan tribute... I believe she and a friend were pelted with
eggs...

Hey Everybody!!

Sorry I didn't post those addresses yet, I think,
that they are at home, not at school. I will keep looking
for those 2 addresses for the 2 Sinead autobiographies!

Anyway...does anybody know if YMMTTOYH will be
released in the US? If so, on maxi-CD Single??

I have yet to see the video... BUT I will get
I will get it thru Rock Video Monthly- it's like columbia
house, but w/ music video samplers w/ 10 videos per tape.
It is on this month's alternative video tape.

I have been playing YMMTTOYH on my college rock
radio show every time. I don't care if anybody is getting
sick of it or not!!!

BTW, does anybody have the CD single of this
song & if so, how are the remixes? I saw it somewhere,
but I didn't get it.

I also heard that Captive won't be released until
5/94, it's not out now- I searched for it today!

	Thanks.

Subject: stretched on your grave
Status: OR

hi everyone!!

I was reading a Celtic poetry book for my Celtic Myths class and I stumbled
upon this poem. Read it and see if it sounds familiar.

I am stretched on your grave, and you'll find me there
always; if i has the bounty of you arms I should never
leave you. Little apple, my beloved, it is time for me to lie
with you; there is the cold smell of the clay on me, the tan
of the sun and the wind.

There's a lock on my heart, which is filled with love for
you, and melancholy beneath it as black as the soles. If
anything happens to me, and death overthrows me, I shall
become a fairy wind-gust down on the meadows before you.

When my family thinks that I am in my bed, it is on your
grave that I am stretched from night until morning, telling my
distress and lamenting bitterly for my quiet lovely girl who
was betrothed to me as a child.

Do you remember the night when you and I were under
the blackthorn tree, and the night freezing? A hundred
praises to Jesus that we did nothing harmful, and that your
crown of maidenhood is a tree of light before you!

The priests and the monks every day are angry with me for
being in love with you, young girl, when you are dead.
I would be a shelter from the wind for you and protection
from the rain for you; and oh, keen sorrow to my heart
that you are under the earth!

I remember reading a while ago that Sinead wrote I Am Stretched On Your Grave
after reading a poem. I guess this is the poem. I was so excited when I
stumbled upon it and I hope you all share in my excitement!

The lyrics to I Am Stretched On Your Grave are actually credited on IDNWWIHNG to
Frank O'Connor the poet. What I'm trying to say is that Sinead wasn't inspired
by the poem to write the lyrics, she just used the poem for the lyrics.

Hmm, I think that Sinead only arranged and adapted what probably is an
old folk song. I am saying this because Dead can dance performed
'I am stretched on your grave' last fall as part of their set, and
I doubt they would do Sinead O' Connor covers. But maybe I am wrong.

The title is "The Unquiet Grave".
The author is unknown, it just says traditional folk song.

The book I found this in is called "The Celtic Miscellany".
It is number 213 and on page 260.

The translator of "The Celtic Miscellany" is Kenneth Hurlstone Jackson.

The book is published by Penguin classics.

Is that all you wanted John?

In my excitement of finding such a treasure I forgot to write down
this information. Sorry!!

Hey Everybody!

I have been listening to Lion & the Cobra & to my sampler
of In Name of the Father almost non-stop lately!!! I can't believe
what great songs "Jackie", "Drink before the War", & "YMMTTOYH" are!!

Anyway... I got the address from the place where I ordered
_So Different_. Do you want it? Here it is...

	Last Grasp
	777 Florida St.
	San Fransisco, CA 94110

fax (415)-824-1836

telephone (415)-824-6636

The book costs $15.95 and the 4th class book rate if $2.50 per book. I
know they have a faster service for like $6.00, but you'd have to call
them to get more details- sorry! Enjoy, this book is really great- it
has amazing art work & photos. There is one picture of Sinead where
she looks like a bounty hunter- she has T2 sunglasses on & a tank top.
I was unable to blink for like 20 minutes after seeing that photo!!
Enjoy1

I gave Chrysalis a ring yesterday...

Sinead has been in a *proper* studio for the last couple of weeks. She has
basically finished recording the new album and will record some additional
stuff next week.
However, Chrysalis said it's not going to be released before September
because it needs to be mixed etc. (what the hell is taking so long?).

Can't wait,

Matthias.

Hey All,

I want to "spark" this up a bit... so here's my review of
my favorite Sinead CD "The Lion & THe Cobra"....

These songs are compared to the avg. song on the radio.

Jackie 5* Great intro. Her voice roars at the end & it's a wierd
love story as well. People refer this to Jackie Onasis & JFK.

Madninka 4.5* Awesome guitar riffs! Her voice is so confusing & one
is never quite sure of what she is really saying. Great song.

Jerusalem 4* Another great track, with funky guitars, keyboards, &
a mysterious meaning. I like how her voice barks towards the end
especially!

Just like U said it would B 2* Too corny. I really don't like how
she sings "You can be my mama" or whatever, other parts are good,
but not good enough. Some refer this to works of the Beatles' during
their days with the album featuring Lady Madonna. (Sorry- the title
of the album slipped my mind!).

Never Gets Old 4* I like the intro, the guitars & how her voice
sails with those howls. It also has great imagery.

Troy 5* A triumphant autobographical song!! It is so delicate
(like when she says "God I love you") and then it's so hoarse
(like during "I'd kill a dragon for you & die!") I hate listening
to this when others are around, because it is so personal!! I think
people don't understand how much emotion & pain she had to conjure
to write this song. I think it is about her mother. I read that
she went by her mother's plave before she died & loked into her
window. Thus the lines... "You should have left the light on". Simply
brilliant.

Hands on Me 3* It's kinda kinky, but the dance beats have been
severly outdated. Her voice is also very good here.

Drink before the War 5* I think this is such an amazing song.
The instruments, her voice, the lyrics... I esp. like "Why
don't you go out there & do something useful!" I feel like
saying that to more people than one would ever know. I play
this one on my radio show pretty often (this & Jackie & YMMTTOYH),
however it was the b-side of Mandinka.

Just Call Me Joe 4.5* Great feed back, weird lyrics & spoken words,
great chorus. What inspired Mr. Mooney to write this one? I liked
it also on the video of Value of Ignrance. The ending lines are
baffling to say the least.

Overall CD... 4.5* This is my fave Sinead CD, tender, rocking,
& memarizing (and that is just Troy!). Highly recommended. Although
she was yound when she wrote most of the material, it is still
great.

Please enjoy & write out your own critiques of her CDs.

WARNING: AFTER KEYING THIS IN I REALIZED IT ONLY REMOTELY CONNECTED TO SINEAD'S
MUSIC -- THIS IS NOT ESSENTIAL READING :)

I'm sitting here drooling, waiting for Sinead's release, and I looked at Dave's
review of _The Lion and The Cobra_. While I'm not a reviewer, it did remind me
of the music (God it's been a while since I listened to that one), so I'd
figure I'd do a little "spark"ing of my own.

Troy -- Really, you think it is about her mother? Wow, I never even thought of
that. I always thought it was a song to a lover who had jilted her. But of
course, I have my own spin on that song...(here comes Paul's spark!!!)

Troy is an important song to me because of an experience I had my freshman year
in college. My roommate was dating a woman when they first got to school, but
they broke up soon after that -- one of those "I'm free, it's a whole new
world" type of things.

We were all music majors, so we hung out together, and I became enamored with
her. But because she had dated my roommate she was forbidden fruit (it's a guy
"code" thing, I guess).

The night before first semester finals we were studying for our music theory
test in her room...it was late...she invited me to sleep in her roommate's bed
rather than walk back to my dorm...we went to bed with a light on...I got out
of bed to turn off the light...she looked gorgeous...and as I turned the light
off, I leaned down and kissed her.

A rather romantic beginning, but unfortunately, the roommate thing got in the
way, and eventually she and I "officially" broke up because of his constant
haranguing, but continued to go out in secret.

At the end of that year I transferred to a bigger school for a lot of reasons
which I don't particularly remember now, but I do remember that she
passionately hated me because after I had made the first move and (eventually)
pledged my love to her, I was leaving forever. The lyrics to "Troy" fit
perfectly with the situation, and I used to drive around for hours, rewinding,
listening to the song, rewinding, listening, etc. ad nauseum, just thinking of
my lost love.

Lost, that is, until I transferred back after my sophomore year, and and now, 7
1/2 years after that first kiss, we are engaged to be married in October.

<goofy smile> "Thanks, Sinead!"

- Paul the lovestruck

P.S. I forgot, the other song on TLaTC that influenced me was when I used part
of "Drink Before the War" in an editorial in my school newspaper during the
Gulf War and just about got strung up by the facist Young Republicans on our
campus for being unpatriotic. But that's another story... :)

I remember reading that TROY is about Sinead's relasionship with a married
black man. Their relasionship was so intense that she had to break it off
because he was married or was he a minister. I think I read this in one of her biographies, but
that was so long ago I don't remember the details. Anyone else remember
reading such a thing? I too have strong emotions when I listen to TROY.

Anyone ever hear of STILL LISTENING the song on the b-side of TROY isn't
that a great song.

JACKIE-O I believe is about a play she saw or a play that she knows about.
I forgot. It does remind me of JFK and JO though.

JUST LIKE YOU SAID IT WOULD BE is like one of the best songs by her.
The whole frame of mind it puts me into is undescribeable.

NEVER GET OLD is awesome because ENYA speaks on it.

I really liked SINEAD'S duet or trio or whatever you call it on PEACE
TOGETHER. I know the first song PEACE IS NOW (I think it's called) is with
PETER GABRIEL and the second version is with ELIZABETH FRAZIER. I like the
second one with ELIZABETH better because both of their voices are beautiful.

I agree with all the comments about Troy. It is, perhaps, the most moving song
I've ever heard. I brings me to tears every time I hear it. I've never heard a
song with more dynamics than that. From whispering to screaming at the top of
her lungs. It's raw, pure, heartfelt soul!! I hope the new album returns to
that kind of rawness. It was an amazing album.

mark.

Paul (the lovestruck) wrote a lovely story about what "Troy" means to him,
concluding with:

>The lyrics to "Troy" fit perfectly with the situation, and I used to drive
>around for hours, rewinding, listening to the song, rewinding, listening, etc.
>ad nauseum, just thinking of my lost love.

>Lost, that is, until I transferred back after my sophomore year, and and now, 7
>1/2 years after that first kiss, we are engaged to be married in October.

I just about had to take out a handkerchief after that one! Thanks for sharing
that, it was very nice to read about your happy ending! Congratulations. Are
you going to play Troy at the reception (I know, it's a little inappropriate,
but since it has special meaning...)?

My Troy story is much less dramatic. When I first heard the song, I was kind
of bored by it. See, I *need* to have a lyric sheet enclosed with an album.
When I can't read the lyrics, I almost always tire of the record easily, since I
find it so incredibly difficult to understand what most artists are saying.
Sinead was certainly no exception (although either her diction has cleared, or
her songs have become less cryptic), and I found myself drawn to the songs I
could choreograph ("Mandinka," "Just Like U Said It Would B," "Jerusalem") and
basically left the rest of them alone.

Well, eventually I joined this list, and someone (several someones, I believe)
was (were) so very kind to work on transcribing the lyrics, and making them
available. So I took the lyrics home, and listened straight through. NOW I
was truly moved! "Troy" and ""Jackie" became instant classics!

Ah, the importance of understanding!

-Sam

Here are some thoughts.

What "The Lion and The Cobra" means to me.
During my Sophomore year of college I was introduced to this
wonderfull album by a friend of mine. I listening to it
a couple of times and thought "Hey this is pretty good."
So I introduced it to my best friend Natalie.

Over the next five or so months it was all we would listen to.
We would hang out together and one of us would always say,
"Hey, put in Sinead!". We both wore out our copies of it on
tape in no time.

When "IDNWWIHNG" came out I remember skipping Trig class to go to
the record store to pick up a copy; I had already wore out a copy of
"NC2U" cassette single. It was good, but it did not MOVE Nat and I
in the same way that "TLaTC" had.

Natalie called the album raw and full of emotion. I just thought it
sounded good.

Well here it is now 5 years later. Nat and I have gone from best friends
to lovers to now were we will be married soon, and we consider "TLaTC"
"our" album (arrogant I know!).

We still listen, only not as much (we found Enya as well!) but it
always reminds of the times we spent together!

Just my .02$

BTW

Our favorite songs are "Troy" and Drink before the War".

Has somebody already posted about this????

According to this week's People magazine, Sinead has recorded a song
for a compilation entitled, _The Glory of Gershwin_, which, as its
name indicates is a collection of Gershwin material. Other artists
mentioned in the blurb were Sting, Elton John, Cher, Elvis Costello
and Meatloaf. It is scheduled for U.S. release in September. Larry
Adler plays harmonica on every track.

That's it.

Hey All,

	I read that Sinead 1. Dated a minister and 2. a black
man. If I remember correctly, the minister was the single (non-
married) of the two. What great stories everybody has about Troy!!

Hi,

this is my first message on this list.
Just want to say that I was talking with Gavin Friday
two weeks ago. he had told me earlier that he had
recorded three duets with Sinead, one of them was
called 'The Bond of Love'. This time I asked him
what had become of those songs and he told me that
it was 'rather heavy' but after 'In the name of the
father' Sinead had found new confidence in herself,
and had wiped all his vocals from the tracks & had
also told Jah Wobble to wipe her vocals from his
upcoming album.
Gavin didn't seen particularly disturbed by this
all, but Jah Wobble was heartbroken.
We both agreed that it was a good thing for
Sinead to regain her confidence.

cheers,

I've just returned from Ireland where I was visiting my family and
heard that Sinead is currenlty recording some material in an old
church just outside of Dublin. The material is said to be very old
traditional Celtic music with ancient Irish poetry. I can't actually
remember the name of the producer but he is reported to have said
that everyone on the project was emotionally moved by the material,
but that it won't be released till later in the year.

Hey All,

Just realized that this song I have been enjoying by a new band called
Wild Colonials is about our beloved Sinead. The song is entitled "Mission"
and I have included the lyrics here without permission:

"If only she smiled and tried to explain
the fire she carries is all of our pain
None of them eager to jump to your side
They know what you mean,
But get swept by the tide
--
Your Eyes touched my heart
As I watched you get spurned
You stood there alone
Like a child being burned
No political tricks are caught up your sleeve
Your is the passion of Adam and Eve

-- Chorus --
ONe day they'll hear the tears that you cry
A child with a mission to fight every lie
One day they'll hear your cry comes with love
You're not denying there's help from above

--
Sometimes you seem so misdirected
you scream of the children
the world has neglected
I know what you're saying
But it's not getting through
You tore down their icon
And watched them all boo
--
I don't think you're wrong,
But your anger's too much
To keep them inspired,
You need more to touch
Go for the heart
Not for the head,
Say it with love,
Awake all the dead!

-- Chorus --

Repeat last verse
Your passion is tearful,
Your power is immense
Use it with caution,
Words that make sense,
Your quivering voice
couldn't take anymore
As you all stood together,
Knock Knockin', Knock Knockin', on heavens door.
--
One day they'll hear the
Tears that you cry
A child with a mission
To fight every lie
One day they'll hear your
Cry comes with love
Your not denying there's help from above
One day they'll hear the tears of Sinead
A child with a mission,
Defiant, defiant and brave."

There it is!

By the way, the Wild Colonials are great! They're style is kinda folky,
rocky, bluegrassy, ummm....rocky at times. The lead singer's voice sounds
like Melissa Etheridge, Amy Ray of Indigo Girls, and Maria McKee all
in one. She's pretty amazing.

Check them out if you get the chance.

  ^^^^^
That first "rocky" should be Irishy (???) or some similar adjective. It
says on the back of the Wild Colonials CD case that "...We played every week
between 9 and 10 down at the Beckett and old Irish Den..." I figure
that many of you would appreciate an Irish tinge to the music you listen
  to.

Lots of violin, cool percussion (etc.), all with a twist on this CD...
Once again, it is entitled "Fruit of Life".

Does anyone know if Sinead's new album has stuff written by her? I loved
Am I Not Your Girl (I love anything Sinead sings), but I prefer her own
original songs. I am hoping it will be more like the Lion and the Cobra.

Also, I wanted to get a hold of her bootlegs. I live in Arizona, does
anyone know where I could get them?

OK, people, I'm lookin' for some stuff, specifically copies (not originals, I'm
poor) of the following songs:

Still Listening
JITR (with Karen Finley)
Damn Your Eyes
The Value of Ignorance
My Special Child
My Heart Belongs to Daddy
Someone to Watch Over Me
Ave Maria
What Do You Want?
---
Heroine (on Captive stk)
Kingdom of Rain (The The)
Mother (From the Wall: Live in Berlin)
Hawaiian Island World (World Party)
Sweet Soul Dream (World Party)
Josey Walsh (Jah Wobble)
Take My Hand (In Tua Nua)
anything by Ton Ton Macoute
---
Smith's Song (from Live at the Paradise bootleg)
Black is the Color of My True Lover's Hair (from Lion/Cage bootleg)

I have the Silent Night cassette single, which I don't want anymore and am
willing to trade, but aside from that all I can offer is providing money for
blank tapes and postage. I would prefer copies from vinyl and CD whenever
possible, as they're more clear, but I'll take what I can get. Be nice to me?

email me in private in response, as that's more polite to the list,
thanks,
skye

The name of the producer is Phil Coulter, who is
otherwise known as a very middle of the road kind of
bloke.

: In answer to two things on the list.
Sinead wiped Gavin's vocals of three tracks off her new
album. Whether she will use the tracks at all, I don't know.
Unfortunately we didn't talk about her too long
as he had other things to tell me concerning his
own various projects.

The producer of her album is called Phil Coulter.

According to the information I have it is original (i.e. her) material.
Some poster reported that Sinead is recording traditional songs in a
church in Ireland. I suspect that this is not for the new album - which is
definetly being recorded in a studio - but for either another album (what
about two Sinead albums this year ;-)) or for someone else's album or for
some TV series or just for fun or for God knows what. In any case, don't
you think that our lady is doing pretty well these days? It seems she's
found new strength/courage/confidence. Great!

Matthias.
