I posted the discography details here about the single a while ago.
It's not actually too bad - Willie "talks" rather than "sings" the song
while Sinead provides her usual ethereal background vocals. I wouldn't pay
import prices for it, unless you like country music as well as Ms O'Connor.

No ... some of us have jobs to do, and contribute to a number of
diverse mailing lists, which is why we *HATE* people who post inane
messages along the lines of "I can't think of anything to say"!!

I know this doesn't have any direct connection to Sinead, but I just came
across an excellent double CD of Peter Gabriel live from Stockholm in
April of '93. The only reason that I'm mentioning it is cause I'm hoping
to make a tape swap with a Sinead live boot. If there are any takers,
please respond.

Thanx!

I agree! I liked them since I've first heard of them- for some reason, I
liked the name. Then when I heard the vocals I realized that their album
had join my collection of favorites. Another group worth checking out is
Belly, with the former Throwing Muses' lead singer.

I would volunteer to forward any "happy birthday" wishes to her.

I agree with you. What I didn't like while they Did get airplay was that
only a few select songs were constantly repeated while others lay
neglected. (a common radio syndrome). Three Babies and Last Day of our
Aquaintance are two of my favorites.

I suspect the main reason Sinead isn't played is because of her actions on SNL.
I know it sounds stupid, but radio (particularly adult-oriented light rock,
which is unfortunately where much of Sinead's stuff was pigeon-holed by the
masses) doesn't want to offend its listeners, and Sinead, right or wrong,
pissed a lot of people off with her actions.

I agree, however, that it's too bad that she is never heard on the radio. Does
anyone know if she is planning to release anything soon (except her backup
stuff, which has appeared on everything from Peter Gabriel's _Us_ to _Peace
Now_, a collection of music by irish or irish-affiliated musicians).

Incidently, stay away from _Peace Now_ if you haven't gotten it yet and you are
getting it for Sinead's involvement. Her voice is buried in the back of the
mix, and while her name gets big play on the cover, I was really disappointed
on her lack of substantive work on the album. Not to say that the album isn't
good -- while some of the tracks are too...sonic, yeah, I think that's
right...for my taste, others are pretty good.

On an unrelated note, how many people are on this list? I think I have only
gotten 1-2 posts since I joined a couple weeks ago. Is it really that dead? Is
there anyone out there?

thanks for the insight!

I don't know how many people are on the list either. I joined about a
month ago and the only posts I received from this lists were signoffs.
I had the same questions. Someone replied something like, she isn't doing
much and that's probally why we aren't either, since there's currently not
much to say about her (they said this much more eloquently than my blunt
version).

I'm unsure of the rules of this list, whether we're limited to Sinead
material or what, but I'd like to see more action here. I've met some
very friendly people already. One thing you don't want to post is- "I
don't know what to say." Someone earlier said that and was what I
consider, harshly reprimanded for his/her (I can't remember) innocent action.

Anyways, if you have any topics you'd like to bring up, I think there are
people who have been waiting for you!

This is my first post to this list, but I have been on for a few
weeks now, wondering the same thing: How many people ARE on this list?
Admittedly, though, it has seemed to pick today (meaning that I have
received more messages today than in the previous two weeks).
I recently heard (though I can't seem to remember exactly where)
that Sinead is at work on another album, but don't quote me on this.
Both the Cranberries and Belly are deserving of the high praise
that they have received. In terms of pure feminine voices, though, I
think that Enya ranks up there with Sinead. Just my opinion....

She is played rarely on 99X in Atlanta. Only stuff from The Lion and the
Cobra though. I think the main problem is she hasn't released anything
that is playable on most stations since 1990. I'm sure the controversy
hasn't helped a whole lot. She also gets played occasionally on one of the
college radio stations here also (Album 88).

I don't think there are all that many people on this list, as I have seen
so many unsubscribes in the last year. There has been very little activity
since the reports of her mental illness, and the cessation of her solo work.

I would like to second the motion of the Cranberries as a band for Sinead
fans. I have been suprised at the number of musicians who seem to have
been influenced by Sinead. Of note are The Cranberries, Sarah MacLachlan,
Bjork, a few others I can't think of. Would anybody like to follow up on
this?

Someone recently mentioned Sinead's Birthday coming up (as well as
mine). I would like to promote us doing something as a group for
this occasion (Sinead's B-day, that is). I am on a list called ECTO,
which is dedicated to singer-songwriter Happy Rhodes (most excellent
recommendations), and every year they do a Happy birthday project
for her, as well as a Christmas project. We could certainly do
something like this for Sinead.

For Happy we each send one song and a greeting to one person, who then
compiles them all on one or two tapes, and sends them off to her. In
addition sometimes we send a gift. One gift was a custom made kite with
an album cover on it. These are just ideas, but I think we should do
something for her.

Hello everybody,

While we are on the topic of singers.... I liked to put my vote in for
Tori Amos. If you haven't head of her your missing out.

She has the same emotional intensity that Sinead has.

She also has Sineads creativity and originallity.

Both singers have _outstanding_ voices.
They can both hit the notes in heaven and then descend to grind their
voices
in hell. The mark in my opion (and only mine) of an outstanding music
maker.

Oh well.

What the heck, I'll post something to this list.... :)

I've been a fan of sinead's since "The Lion and the Cobra" first came out.
Once I owned the album on cd, I became a still bigger fan... :)

Admittedly, I only have her studio albums, a couple of singles, and
other albums that feature her work. (Peter Gabriel's US, Willie Nelson's
latest album, the Peace Together compilation, Stay Awake, etc....)....

Sadly, I've never seen her in concert. Nor do I have any posters or t-shirts
or such things. I'm not usually into those kins of things anyway, but
somehow I think a sinead t-shirt would be really cool. (any ideas on
if any are still out there to be found?)

What else? I'm woefully behind on sinead news, I guess... 'cuz i keep
thinking, in response to various posts here, "what mental illness?"...

About myself.... I'm a 22 year old English major at Augustana College
inSioux Falls, South dakota. Though I'm from Mound, MN.. a suburb of
Minneapolis, MN... on Lake Minnetonka.... I'm a music, tv, movie buff.
Also heavily involved in Science Fiction and Fantasy fandom.. (read it
a lot, attend plenty of conventions, work at a number of them, etc.)
and yeah, I'm a geeky Star Trek fan, too. Musically, my tastes range
from folk to jazz to blues to rock to alternative to worldbeat to irish
traditional.... um... and all sorts of other things. My biggest faves
are probably Peter Gabriel and Richard Thompson.

As far as female vocalists go, if you like Sinead, I would recommend:
Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, HappyRhodes, Kate Bush, the Sundays, the
Cranberries, the sugarcubes/bjork, The Innocence Mission, Cocteau Twins,
This Mortal Coil, Sam Phillips, June Tabor, Kirsty McCall, and lotsa other
folks. Their all ambient or similar, with female vocals.... some more
ambient than others... also, Belly..... etc.
The closes to Sinead emotion and feel would probbly be Tori and Sarah.
(gjeez, I left out Jane Siberry and Heidi Berry and and and...)

Oh well. Enough babbling from this quarter... see ya on tis list if
  not others... :)

i don't know why i am still subscribe to this list. but, since i am, i might
as well contribute something.

the thing that appeals to me most about sinead is her emotional intensity.
although i only saw her once on the idwwihg tour, i wish i saw her on the
lion and the cobra tour. I was way too far away to enjoy any emotional
feedback. the value of igornance is great for those of who miss her on
lion tour.

the reason i am bringing this up is i want to recommend red house painters
in terms of emotional intensity. when i saw rhp, i was in heaven.
although, he puts alot of emotions in the studio versions, seeing him live
is totally a different story. as far other bands that a sinead fan might
enjoy, Laurel did a fine listing. but i think cocteau twins is better then
sinead = ) although liz is not as emotional, her voice simply makes me
smile ; )

i have FOUR sinead t-shirts, but i don't them too often now. I used to be
in love with sinead, but now i love eliz. anyway, i haven't seen any
t-shirts of sinead since i went to college. oh, well, listen to your local
college radio station and there might be a chance that sinead will get any
air play.

Subject: ADMINISTRIVIA -- list changes

Since there seems to be a recent flurry of activity on the list, I
wanted to let everyone know what's coming up, and explain the delay on
some administrative stuff like address changes and deletions. I have
left IntelliGenetics (ig.com) but am still reading mail here. While
some logistical details are finalized, I probably won't be able to
process list requests, but this should only be a day or two. So if
you are trying to get off the list, change your address, or have
a friend who wants to join, please be patient for a little while
longer.

Secondly, the list will likely move to a different host in the next
week or two, or even a shorter time. The likely new home will be
net.bio.net, where the JITR archives live, but this is not finalized
-- so don't send any requests there. I hope to put the list under
some more automated control (the Majordomo list server) to make
request processing quicker, but that may take some time as well.

More on this as it develops.

One last item -- someone asked how many people were on the list. I
don't have the file in front of me, but I believe the current total is
about 150. I'll post a Internet-demographic breakdown when I get a
chance. (To a first approximation, most members of the list are at
U.S. and Canadian university sites, with fair number of subscribers
from the UK and Ireland, and some other Europeans. Our first Russian
subscriber will be added this week.)

Well, not really a topic, but I was wondering if anyone out
there has a video copy of her SNL-Pope show that I could copy?
I have her first SNL appearance on VHS tape that i could trade...
as well as some other appearance (i think at the grammys when she
has the baby clothes hanging out)

Also, I'd like to get a copy of a song she did with the Edge
called Heroin(e) or something or other. Where can I get a good but
inexpensive copy of this, anyone know?

thanks,
sam :)

p.s. poor pope..how did he break his shoulder? why do bad things
happen to good people? is it punishment for a sin or just a test
of faith?

I have her disc too! I think her background music helps create the mood
to compliment her voice. I like all that romantic synthesized stuff.
Even though they played that one song of hers to death on the radio, I
still am captivated every time I hear it.

and find lots of mail to wade through each day. But when I first came to
this list, it seemed like there were people on the list who were afraid to
speak up and all they needed was to get the ball rolling. I felt your
response chased them back into the silence.

Now the list is chattering and bringing up alot of artists that can
appease us Sinead lovers while she is in her production gap.(hopefully not
permanent). (in response to your statement-
Surely if Sinead is doing nothing (and there is nothing to discuss),
then it is better if things are quiet on the list?)

I appreciate you contacting me. At that time, on one of my other lists,
there was a big argument about censorship and what is or is not
appropriate to post. I guess I was fed up with reprimands as to what to
write. I understand your point of view on this and respect it.

tracy

(Philip, I can't mail directly to you so I had to post this to the list-
Sorry to list members)

I would in no way claim that Happy Rhodes "matches" sinead, but I
would seriously recommend that you check out Happy if you haven't
already. If you have, i'm interested in hearing what you think.

The way the tape project works is that everybody sends a song (usually NOT a
song by the artist concerned) to one person on a tape. Then that person makes
a cassette copy that is a compilation of all the songs sent, and sends it off
to the artist whose birthday it is. All contributors also get copies of the
compilation if they submitted a tape.

Does anyone remember when Sinead's birthday is? I was deleting rather quickly
the day (Matthias?) posted it. It may be too late to do a project like this
this year. But we could at least send a card or something. I have the

facilities to make a large format card if someone else has the ideas to put
on it. Anybody? Anybody? Anybody?

The Birthday project:

As a reminder: Sinead's Bday is on the 8 Dec 1966.

To be honest, I got the idea for the Bday project from the ecto mailing list
(hi Jessica, Angelos and all the others). I think for producing a tape it's too
late. I would have the facilities to do this but I simply haven't got the time.
So my proposal is that I collect your e-mail Bday wishes for her. I would then
print out all of them (in a decent layout of course), attach a Bday card and send
it to her.

I'm not sure where Sinead is at the moment or where she will be on her Bday.
So I'll probably not send the stuff to her home address but rather to her
management (or I pop into their office and deliver it personally). However it's
not ensured that Sinead is ever going to get it then. It might end up in the
wastebasket of Pure Management (now you know what I think of her management).

Anyway. If you want to send Sinead Bday wishes then e-mail them to me at

	mr3@doc.ic.ac.uk

You should include your real name and address.

Let's get this going.

Matthias
(I must be mad to do this)

post address. I thought it would be good if Sinead sees where the messages
come from. I don't want to bother her with e-mail addresses :-).

You don't have to append your full address. Just the country/state/city.

Recently the questions was raised whether this space (e.g. the JITR mailing list)
should be used to discuss the works of other artists.
My opinion to this is: NO
I consider it a major advantage that this list focusses on Sinead exclusively. If
I wanted to discuss the music of other female singer/songwriters I could subscribe
to the ecto mailing list.
This doesn't mean that no other artists should be mentioned. A note "check out X"
is ok. I just want to avoid discussions about X on this list.

Just my opinion.

Matthias.

Ahh, yet another discussion of proper use of a list.
Well some time ago, i posted a querry as to a soundtrack that Sinead was
working on, it has either been released very recently or will be
released very soon. No one replied.

I go in on the Cranberries, generate a conversation and i am told that
isn't proper material for the list. Puhhlease... lighten up folx.

As for radio play, maybe i can shed some light on the subject.
I work at my universities college radio station, but it is no ordinary
radio station, it is a commercial alternative music radio station.

I am referring to 95-5 WBRU for those of you in the Southern New England
area... a radio station that works under a format.

Well, songs that are most likey to get played are those released on single.
In fact, just today i heard Jerusalem... it was great, its been a while..
i need to dig out my cobra cassette.

As a DJ during Radio Free Providence i do not have to pick songs from
a card file, rather i can play whatever i want (esp if its not in rotation)
so i usually play something off of AINYG... just for kicks.

I mentioned the rotation earlier... the songs we play are the songs we get
requests for, so don't blame the station, call in and beg for Sinead cuts.

If my station is at all indicative of others, which i am sure it is...
all songs are broken into categories, even the old ones are ranked by
popularity, some classics like COme On Eileen are set up to only be played
Once every few months. It's your job to beg the DJ's to write your
requests down, bring back the old songs... maybe you can even find a station
with the remixes from I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got... you say you like
Emperor's new clothes now... the remixes are fabulous and they get played
on my radio station's dance show... occasionally. Of course if i ever got a
request, maybe i'd play it without drawing its card first...

Don't blame the stations, they aren't your memory's archive, although they
rely on requests to let them know what should be played. I don't know
of a station that doens't have an all request show. Call!!!
say, i want my Sinead, or belly or breeders or cranberries or tori amos or sara
h mclachlan or indigo girls or sun60 or whatever....

send flames personally, i am not sure to read the list... it has sucked lately
and the only things i will rerad will have suggestions in the header
for other bands that i should listen to...

Kinda funny how the suggestion/request thing works.

Actually, I'd really like to see e-mail addresses listed (not
exclusively, in addition to snail mail addresses). I think it's
important for artists to know about the net, to know they have
fans who communicate via the net and who can and do use the net
to spread word about artists. I don't know what sinead knows about
the net, but if she doesn't knwo about it already, she ought to
find out. If she does already know, she will certainly be pleased
to see the addresses. If not she'll wonder and then she'll find out.

Tribe is on the net, Happy Rhodes and Tori Amos know about and
appreciate the net (to name just a few, i know there are actually many
more artists who are on or know about the net).

That's what I intented to do.

Agreed. BUT. It's not easy to explain to someone the net. It's even
harder in the case of her management I suppose. They've *never* showed
any interest in our (JITR) activities.

Unless someone else told her Sinead knows nothing about the net. I
mentioned it to her but I couldn't possibly *explain* it in the few
minutes I had.

If anyone wants to write something explaining JITR / the net, I'll
include it in my mail to Sinead. *I* haven't got the time to do it
and it should really be done properly.

I'm fairly new to the Net and this list. I've been browsing through the

Does anybody know how I can get my mitts on the bootlegs listed in the
Discography and which are the best to go for (although the presence of
Troy on Beautiful Vision is a strong point in its favour).

So far I've only received 8 replies. I'm wondering whether the whole thing is a
good idea anyway. I'm a bit concerned about how it might affect Sinead. Hence I'm
asking all the survivors amongst the jitr subscribers what they think. Please
tell me if you think the project is more likely to harm Sinead than doing her
any good. Sinead seems to be in a rather stable mental state at the moment, but
this might be a wrong impression and I know it probably doesn't take much and
she would plunge into a crisis again.

Hi, Matthias and all in the JITR!

I think your Bday project is a sheer great idea and I want to join it:

My full name's Vladislav D. Nebolsin, I'm Russian, live in Moscow, Russia.
I was born 15 Dec, 1974 (by the way, it's very close to Sinead!).

Let me to tell my wishes for Sinead to Russian:

"Lubimaya Sinied, ghelaiyu tebe lubit` bez oglyadki i ne otchaivat`sya,
nikogda ne otchaivat`sya! S dnem rogdeniya! Tvoi Vlad."

I'll try translate it to English:
"Darling Sinied, I wish you to love recklessly and don't being in despair,
never not being in despair! Happy birthday! Your Vlad."

That's all.

I doubt that receiving a birthday card would upset Sinead. As long as we did
not have lots of comments about bad music, depression, etc. Maybe you

I have not sent any birthday wishes because as far as I can tell, one of
the few consistent things Sinead has been saying for the last two years or
so is that she wants to be left the fuck alone, and I frankly don't
understand why people feel that any other course of action would be
appreciated.

Don't mean to offend anyone, just calling it as I see it. You asked.

It's a very serious point you're bringing up there. I'm aware of the
things Sinead said. I know that she said she wants to be left alone.
However, I've also heard other statements, like that she feels lonely,
that she dislikes having to keep people at arm's length distance etc.
I'm quite convinced that if everyone had left her alone she would be
dead by now!
I remember that she once said how nice it was when Irish women gave
her flowers on the street in Dublin or when they just smiled at her.
There is a difference between bothering her because you want
something *from* her and trying to help and support her, e.g. wanting
something *for* her. Even in the latter case one has to be careful.
For instance I'm very reluctant to send the Bday wishes to her
home address.

Thanks again to Ken for bringing up this issue.
Further comments are appreciated.

I have interpreted being "left the fuck alone" as Sinead being really
tired of 1) people demanding to know when she will record/tour/speak/appear
again; 2) people demanding to know the state of her
health/emotions/relationships ; 3) people wanting to debate
politics/the pope/child abuse/whatever; 4) people with well-meant but
unsolicited personal/professional advice; 5) people wanting to turn
her into a pop idol/sex symbol/cultural icon/whatever and so forth.

I don't think a simple, tasteful birthday card "signed" by a number of
people who admire her music and courage would fall into the above category.

Well, it's just that Occam's Razor forces me to assume that when someone
says "Leave me alone," they mean "leave me alone," as opposed to "leave me
alone unless you think maybe you have something NICE to say and then go
ahead and bother me."

I mean, it's one thing if someone you love or care about says that, because
chances are they mean something different, but however we might like her
music, we don't know her at all and she sure as hell doesn't know us.
Support from strangers is often neither helpful nor welcome.

The only reason I said anything was because Matthias asked for our thoughts
on the subject. I shared mine. I am not telling anyone else what to do or
not to do, merely explaining why I've chosen not to do anything.

>For instance I'm very reluctant to send the Bday wishes to her

There's a faint hint of stalking around this entire list sometimes, and I
really think that sending them to her management or record company would be
a MUCH better idea. I have no idea why anyone here would have any reason to
send anything to the home of a complete stranger. When in doubt, back off.
I doubt you'll be wrong.

Matthias posted his query about whether the birthday project was a good idea
after I expressed concern about possible effects on Sinead's state of mind.

After discovering that Sinead is walking around in public, my concern has
pretty much dropped to zero. A "happy birthday!" is certainly going to be a lot
less bothersome than what she would suffer on a daily basis.

So why bother her at all?

I owe Sinead quite a lot for significant changes in my life, and I would at
least like to make it possible for her to know this if she was interested. Many
musicians have said that if their music has helped someone, somewhere, then it
has all been worthwhile.

Perhaps Sinead feels this way, perhaps not. This is my one and possibly only
fan letter that I will ever write. If she wants to read the birthday greetings,
she can. If she doesn't want to, she can throw the piece of paper to one side,
having wasted .003 nanoseconds of her time.

A further factor in my consideration is that "Leave me alone" would be a
stereotypical command. I, myself, have quite often snarled this comment at
various groups of people - yet I do not mean it to apply universally. The
reason that Sinead would say this so much is that she would have a larger
number of undesirable pain in the arses bugging her.

I have been amazed to read of famous people commenting that their mailbox
consists almost solely of demands and abuse. It appears that greed and anger
are higher motivating forces than gratitude.

So, in summary:

If she wants to be left alone, she can dispose of the piece of paper in .003
nanoseconds with no thought to it.

Given a significant chance, as far as I can analyze, that the birthday project
will give her at least a warm feeling, I feel that it is a worthwhile gesture
to make.

Nevertheless, I will not be expecting Sinead to read the greetings. I am not
expecting nor wanting anything.

PS. This message is written to explain how I see it, not to try and convince
you that you are wrong. I do feel that you are most likely correct.

I have been planning on buying one of her albums. I've heard some of her
songs and have been impressed. Question for ya- How many albums does she
have and if more than one, which do you suggest to buy first? (I usually
don't buy several albums from one artist because I like to adventure and
buy new and different albums- unless I find that I love the album so much,
I have to buy the others)

Hi All,

I'm fairly new to the Net and this list. I've been browsing through the
ftp site looking at the pics at archives and I've got a question.

Does anybody know how I can get my mitts on the bootlegs listed in the
Discography and which are the best to go for (although the presence of
Troy on Beautiful Vision is a strong point in its favour).

Two people have asked about Tori Amos albums, with no responses that I
have seen. So I will respond. Tori has had only two albums so far. The
first is Y Kant Tori Read. It was released on an independant label,
and is extremely rare. The CD version costs something like US$200. Her
only major label album release so far is Little Earthquakes. She has released
several EP's, many of which have some otherwise unavailable tracks that are
really worth having (esp. Crucify). But if you are looking to start listening
to Tori, go ahead and buy Little Earthquakes.

this is my first time responding to anything on this mailing list.
after reading numerous letters about other artists, i decided to put
my 2 cents in also. i love the cranberries (as many other people
have mentioned before). i was playing i for someone and she asked if
sinead was singing on the album. i also listen to kate bush, this
mortal coil, tori amos (of course), the cocteau twins, dead can
dance, and 10,000 maniacs. all having beautiful voices. i'm not
saying they match up to sinead, but each has a unique style that may
help in "tiding you over" until sinead's next release.

i also have a question, and i am sorry if i am offending anyone by
discussing other artists under this board. i am new to the net and
am interested in any other "alternative" (if i must call it that)
boards that are in existence. i subscribed to this along with
several other lists such as kate bush and concrete blond, but in the
last two months i have not received any mail from any list other
than this one. if anyone has any suggestions i would be very happy
to hear them.

my address is "mcole@uwlax.edu" or just simply through this board.

p.s. yes, i am from wisconsin, but i don't live on a farm. i like
cheese, though.

Has anyone heard of Melissa Ferrick? I caught a song of hers on a radio station
in Va Beach last weekend and I can't get it out of my head; something like "once
in my life". I'm trying to find the album it's from....

The truth is, i don't know how many tracks there will be.
There are three artists being hyped up, Bono and Sinead being 2 of
them... i am not sure who the third is...

It would seem the soundtrack will be a US release as it seems the
film is a US release...

That's all i know folks.
Ungrateful miscreants =)
