This is from Reuters, 7/13/93 (without comment):

DUBLIN -- Irish rock star [sic] Sinead O'Connor has pulled out of her
planned stage debut in Dublin at the last moment, complaining of
emotional exhaustion.

The 27-year-old singer was to have opened Thursday (7/15) in "Hamlet's
Nightmare" in which she was to have played the part of Death.

A brief statement from the Project Arts Center said: "Due to emotional
exhaustion and in consultation with producer Mary Breen Farrelly,
Sinead O'Connor apologizes for withdrawing from the forthcoming
production of 'Hamlet's Nightmare.'"

O'Connor pulled out of an Irish peace concert last month at the last
moment and then too a full-page advertisement in an Irish newspaper
asking people to leave her alone to get on with her life.

I've just joined this list last week. Nothing much has happened. Of course
there has been little public news of Sinead for a long while. Hence this
posting. The last I heard Sinead was going to take time off to relax,
recover, and study opera. Has any one heard ANYTHING? She's living back in
Ireland right? I also heard that she either has or will be on a compelation
album which has a focus of "end the violence in Northern Ireland." Is this
true? Is it released? Does she contribute a new song? If this has already
been discussed in earlier postings can some one please fill me in?
Otherwise what's happened to Sinead?

She was seen at the album launch party of the Peace Together Project last Monday
here in London. She told the reporters a very long fairytale about and Irish King,
a princess, their children.
She's mentally ill. Very ill. And it will take time, probably years, possibly
forever until she'll be able to act as a "normal" human being. So please don't
judge her by her actions. And don't question anything what she says about her
abuse. DON'T question anything. That's the worst thing you can do. Don't be
annoyed if she doesn't show up at concerts, doesn't produce a new album etc. You
can be dissappointed, but don't be angry with her. Her only goal is recovery.
She tries to avoid anything which threatens this goal. And sometimes it is just
a matter of hours during which it becomes apparent that something might threaten
her recovery. She needs help and support. But she isn't a "normal" person. She's
sick. "normal" support and help are very likely to damage her instead of doing
her any good. I'm glad she's seeing a therapist. He/She might have the insight to
help her. But even this is not certain.
Oh well. I'm afraid nobody will understand this stuff I've just written. Never
mind. Just forget it then.

To get back to the question: The only certain thing one can say is that recovery
is her primary goal. Everything else is less important.

Matthias.
PS: I'm not sure whether I should send this. But I do it anyway. No flames,
please. I'm not in the position to discuss about this.
