Subject: Sinead article in Boston Phoenix B.A.D. Oct. 30 1992 p.17
Sent-Via: jitr@presto.ig.com
Status: OR

There is a pro-Sinead article in the Boston Phoenix B.A.D. of Oct. 30 1992
on p. 17.

Title: Sinead of Arc
Subtitle: Taking arms against Joe Pesci and the cult of domination
Author: Lynne Layton

Notable quotes:

  ...
The SNL audience the following week cheered when Joe Pesci allied
himself with the pope and said he'd have smacked O'Connor had she done
it on *his* show (thus proving her point).
  ...
Sporting a sweatshirt that says "Recovering Catholic," O'Connor, in an
interview in this month's "Rolling Stone", says that though "it's my
belief in God that's got me through," the Catholic Church so scarred her
parents that it is responsible for her own and others' child abuse. For
Sinead, the Church is where we learn to humiliate others, to feel badly
about ourselves---where we learn no love and mutual respect but
  domination and submission.
  ...
To us, it may seem odd that O'Connor lays all the blame on the Church,
but in her country, Church and State are more clearly one.
  ...

Anyway, a good article.

=/= Absolutely proving her point.

=/= Alas, her comments about Givens and Tyson completely
undermine her point. She expounds on this at length in
a very unfortunate interview in this Sunday's _San_Francisco_
_Chronicle_, sounding eerily like a Camille Paglia Wannabe.

=/= She also thinks _Iron_John_ is a good book. *Shudder*.

=/= Sinead gets the Homer Simpson Award for Mental Acuity
this week. Make that the Dan Quayle Award . . .

I thought this might interest the subscribers to
this mailing list.
Yes, the latest TIME issue ( Nov9, 1992 ) with
the cover `Can GM survive in today's world' has a
2-page interview with Sinead O'Connor and this
interview was taken after the SNL controversy.

I heard on Radio 1 this morning that Sinead has been refused a US visa to
attend the election celebrations. It's claimed that it's censorship, and
that she intended to rip up a picture of George Bush.

Here are some quotes from last weeks interview in NME:

Let's get rid of the cause of all our problems, which is money.

We're at the end now. This is the end of the world as we know it,
 right?

Ninety-five per cent of the world's wealth is owned by five per cent
of the world's population. That's the whole problem - some have and
some haven't.

There is no time to sit around writing songs or bedding in for peace.
It's time to fight.

As far as I'm concerned, what I learnt on Friday night (BD Tribute) is
that there is no longer any point in trying to use music as a means
of communicating with people. I will not do that until this fight is
finished. I'm doing this to create the circumstances under which we
can communicate with each other musically. They have taken control
of the music business. We don't get our records played. They play
MC Hammer but the won't play Ice Cube. They play Belinda Carlisle
but they won't play Sinead O'Connor. That's the way it goes. There's
no point trying to do it that way. And also, if a kid is sitting here
being raped, I'm not gonna sit around writing a song about it, am I?
I'm doing this to create the circumstances under which we can have
the freedom to express ourselves, but until this happens, I'm not
writing any more fucking songs and I'm not singing any more fucking
songs. Because this has to happen soon. In weeks, not month. In
weeks, right?

Is it just me, or has this list been unusually quiet? I hope that
it's not because of the lack of attention (mainly negative) the media has
given Sinead lately. Hopefully, we have more to discuss than what
celebrity has been the latest to bash Sinead (personally as well as
politically). Myself, I tend to ignore what others (particularly in the
news media) think. There has ALWAYS been a firestorm of controversy
surrounding Ms. O'Connor, and there always will be, so long as she
continues speaking her mind without feeling the need to defend her
thoughts, or wrap them up in innocuous pseudo-scandalous lyrics and videos
(a la Madonna). Hers is not the "Iron fist in the velvet glove". She
makes no bones about what she believes and this disturbs most people.
After all, if one person is like that, shouldn't we ALL be like that,
refusing to compromise our beliefs? Nobody likes to feel guilty. I think
she threatens people because she makes them take a look at their own
lives..mostly ignoring what they think and feel in order to "get along".

Anyway, this has turned into a tangent, which I didn't mean it to be.
I just basically wanted to say that I hope we don't turn this list into a
"reaction" of what OTHERS think or say about Sinead O' Connor. Let's fill
it with our OWN thoughts about the woman and her work, and what it means in
a world that is too often sapping us of our individuality.

                                  Ericka

Yesterday Evening, London, Subterania, A Concert with Jah Wobble and The
Invaders of the heart.
I stand amongst the crowd (the concert hasn't started yet). Suddenly I see a
small person, dressed in something like a suit, walking into the backstage area.
A couple of minutes later this person (a bald-headed woman) goes to the bar.
I follow her. Some people talk to her. She smiles. I stand next to her at the
bar. She wears a sticker '100% Irish'. She orders a drink and pays. I say: "hello Sinead!", She answers (with a smile on her face): "Hello". We shake hands. Then I tell her, that she has a strong influence on people with her music. She answers "Thank you!" and smiles again. "Is it really true, that you want to quit music business and don't make records anymore?". "No, it isn't!". "So it was just a rumour?", "Yes". "OK, see you later!" "Bye!". Somebody offers her a Marlboro. Meanwhile the concert has started. Sinead is standing amongst the audience, 1 armlenght in front of me. She apparently enjoys the music. Later on she enters the stage, welcomed buy a cheering crowd, and sings the backup-vocals to "Vision of You". The audience join her in singing the refrain. At the end of the song the audience howl and cheer. She says something ("Thank you for upbringing me!" - but I'm not sure) and leaves the stage. But she comes back later to sing the main vocals together (in a duet) with one of the Invaders. Her voice

echos and is very clear. She shouts and wispers...it's fantastic. I'm on the verge of tears. A couple of minutes later she leaves the
club. I smile to her and give her a sign, that a really enjoyed it. She smiles
back.
That's it. You can imagine, that I couldn't sleep last night. I'd never seen her
live before! It will take some time until I realize what happend.

Which made me think. Does Sinead know about this list? If not, we should
try to somehow let her know about it. Does anybody out there have the address
of Pure (her management company)? They have offices in LA according to the
liner notes of AINYG and therefore could be in the LA phonebook (worth looking
anyway). If you find it, please post it, because I would be interested in
contacting them to see how we could voice our support to Sinead.

In other news, Rolling Stone had an article on the Dylan tribute, where a lot
was said about the Sinead incident. Apparently there were some participants
who were on her side. Lou Reed also made a statement supporting Sinead. I knew
Lou was cool! :) But then RS goes and gives AINYG ** 1/2. Not bad, but not
too good either.

Angelos

I will probably go to her record company next week (only 20min walk
from here). I expressed my support when I met her but I didn't told
her about the list. So maybe I can do this then when I meet the right
people at Ensign.

My personal favorite is the "I am Stretched on Your Grave" remix that
features the guitar riff from the Smiths' "How Soon is Now?" I think this
is fairly obscure...I worked at a record store when it came out, and
grabbed up the first (cassette) copy we got of it. I don't remember ever
seeing anymore of them. Sinead is wearing a gorgeous red dress and posing
against green leaves...one of the most striking pictures of her EVER. Also
includes remixes of "The Emperor's New Clothes"...

BTW, while we're on the subject, a friend of mine insists he has heard
a remix of "Nothing Compares 2 U"...really fast and almost hardcore. Yet
no record store I've ever been in knows anything about it. Is it an
import? Does it even exist? If you know anything about it, please let me
know.Thanx

As I was heading out to the pub on Saturday night, I glanced at the
TV listings and saw that they were showing Saturday Night Live on
BBC2 at 00:45, with guests including Sinead O'Connor!!

Thinking that this was a chance to see the pope/picture event, I
dusted off the video, read the instruction manual again (as you
might guess, I don't use the TV or video very often!) and set it on
Record.

On arrival home, I watched SNL (first time even, and I was totally
unimpressed with it as a TV show!) until Sinead came on, sang _Am I
not your girl_ and that was it :-(

So: how old is this SNL? How many weeks before the pope
controversy? Who else was on that show (the listings here only
mention the 2 main guests)? And will the BBC show that one (I'll
keep an eye on the listings for the next few weeks)???????

That was the same episode: they obviously censored "War", which was
her second song (all musical guests get at least two songs - special
ones get three [which has only happened twice that I know of]).

Here's what Roger Waters once said about Sinead....
--------------------------------------

: (Ms O'Connor appeared at Waters's 1990 performance of The Wall in Berlin, in
:aid of Leonard Cheshire's Memorial Fund For Disaster Relief.)
: "It was very, very hard work organising that Wall concert but everyone was
:fabulous to work with - Bryan Adams, Van Morrison, Cyndi Lauper, bloody
:brilliant. All brilliant. Except for Sinead O'Connor. Oh, God! I have never
:ever met anybody who is so self-involved and unprofessional and big-headed and
:unpleasant. She is so far up her own bum it's scary. With The Wall, she was so
:worried that there weren't any other (_adopts Irish "brogue"_) 'young people on
:the show'. I and everybody else were old farts in her opinion so she was
:worried that she was doing something that wasn't 'street' enough. And because
:it wasn't 'street' enough, she came up with this brilliant idea: she said that
:I should employ Ice-T or one of those people to re-work one of my songs as a
:rap number! I am not joking! And neither was she fucking joking! That's the sad
:thing - she was serious! And then a couple of months after the show, when the
:record was out, she did an interview on American television, millions of
:viewers, and she rubbished the whole thing, said the Wall concert was a load of
:wank. I don't give a fuck what she though about it but she should have kept her
:fucking mouth shut because it could only hurt the charity, the memorial fund
:and everything that Leonard (Cheshire) had done. She doesn't understand
:anything. She's just a silly little girl. You can't just lie in the corner and
:shave your bloody head and stick up your arse and occasionally pull it out to
:go (_"brogue"_) 'Oh, I tink this is wrong and dat is wrong' and burst into
:tears."

In response to Philip Katz:

Sorry to break it to you, but the SNL on which Sinead sang "Am I Not Your
Girl?" was indeed the show on which she tore up the picture. Apparently, the
BBC decided to edit out her second song ("War"). To be certain you saw the
correct show, was Tim Robbins the host?

You know, it might not have been the BBC. Maybe anyone who plays this show
after its original air date will have the version without Sinead's second song.
Did anyone else see a later version and run into the same problem?

While reading the lyrics to PG's _Us_ I discovered that that these
lyrics as well could be from Sinead! The whole style, the topics
etc.--it looked very familiar to me. They really seem to have many
things in common. One could imagine Sinead singing all these stuff
and everybody would believe it was written by her.

And there is another thing: Sinead mentioned the movie
_The_Last_Temptation_Of_Christ_ in one of the recent interviews (I
think it was the one in the NME) and Peter Gabriel wrote the music
to this film!

A spokesman of Sinead said in the Melody Maker that she's not going
to quit, although she meant it very serious when she said it. But he
met her a couple of days later when she obviously had changed her
mind again. He also stated that she DID a live performance during
the Jah-Wobble Concert in London's Subterania (which you already
know about -M.R.) AFTER her statement, which apparently proves the
opposite of the retirement-announcement.

So I think, we can be quite certain (as it has been confirmed by
herself and her spokesman) that she's not thinking about quitting -
at least at the moment.

Furthermore, MM writes, that _Argentina_ will be released as a 2 disc
single (as they already did it with _Success_). The first CD will
again include only album tracks (as far as I can remember) and the
second will have _Ave_Maria_ as a bonus track. The release date is
30th November.

30th November is also the new UK release date for the
_A_Very_Special_Christmas_II_ CD featuring Sinead with Bob Dylan's
_I_Believe_In_You.

At HMV I saw a Sinead poster today. But I didn't buy it for two
reasons:
1. it was from 1989 or so
2. it was 6 Pounds!

However, it's been the first poster of her I saw (not counting the
advert. posters of course).

They also had two books (So_Different and another one). So_Different
seems to be quite good but unfortunatly it was finished in 1990 so
it doesn't include the more recent events. But the pictures of her
are really interesting. For instance she still had her hair when she
was 19 (looked a bit punk-alike during her teens - she also was the
singer of a punk band I think). And there are some really nice

For any of you that are on the Sinead mailing list, I have a huge
favor to ask you...

I'm presently in a Philosophy class, and for our final "project," we
have to come up with a case study of a situation, song, etc. and then
provide an analysis of the situation based on a particular theory
presented in class. My question to all of you is:

Does anyone still have the full account of what happened to Sinead
on Saturday Night Live? What I mean is, could anyone provide an
objective account of the words of the song "War" she sang and all
the things she said as she was ripping up the Pope's picture. I
know that this is all old news to you, but you people are the only
reliable source it seems to getting out news on Sinead. I saw that
particular SNL myself, but it's been so long, and I don't know the
words to War. So if anyone could repost it or mail me directly,
I'd be forever indebted! Thank you.

I will be out of town until 6 December and the JITR list will be running on
autopilot, meaning that there will be no additions/deletions/requests/etc.
serviced, and that minor mailer problems, if any, will probably go unsolved
until then. If anything really major blows up, please notify

as usual.

All addition/deletion requests sent to jitr-request up until 15:00
PST (California time) today (20 November 1992) have been processed.

It is really still on the same machine -- we just changed its name
>from turbo.bio.net to net.bio.net, and moved the jitr archive into a
subdirectory called "misc" off the root of the anonymous FTP account
since the FTP archive area is now shared by some other projects.

In brief:

	ftp net.bio.net [134.172.2.69]
	login: anonymous
	password: guest [or whatever]
	cd misc/jitr
ls -l [for a listing of files]

Well, i get MusiquePlus, not MuchMusic. Some people in Quebec that
are on the CF cable network do get it tough. I'll check it out at
a friends house. I think he has CF cable. Around here (south shore of
Montreal) we only have Videotron cable.

They say half hour, but you can count the long intro and extro plus some
stupid comments, and that leaves time for 4 clips (maybe 5 if they are
really nice), one of them beeing an interview of somesort with Sinead if
they have one.

Ciao,

After Sinead had appeared at the Jah Wobble Concert in the
Subterania earlier this month she went on stage at another concert
last week (can't remember the name of the band - it's written in the
latest issue of the NME - so if somebody who has this issue would
please post the name).
Sinead will also appear at the AI tribute next Sunday (29th) at the
Royal Festival Hall. I haven't got a TV program for this weekend so
I don't know whether it'll be broadcasted on TV.

Apparently she wants to confirm her decision to continue with making
music. A spokesman of her said that she was probably very angry at
the moment when she said she'd quit and that she really meant it but
later she changed her mind again.

So we can really be quite happy these days. She doesn't quit, the
second of the _Argentina_ singles will be released next week and
Chrysalis might still want to set up a tour for her (this info I got
from Jason - thank you).

During my weekly visit to the local record stores I discovered that
there is a single from a group called "MARXMAN". And, what a
surprise, the track features Sinead singing the backing vocals of
"Ship Ahoi". Sinead joined MARXMAN live on stage two weeks ago
when the group wa opening act for another band. I've heard that
there also exist a video of this song featuring Sinead as well.

The _Argentina_ single includes a live version of _Scarlett_Ribbons_.
The cover shows Sinead's face this time.

_A_Very_Special_Christmas_2_ has been released in the UK this week.
