Peter Gabriel has returned after a 6 year hiatus, the end of his
marriage, and other sordid affairs. The new stuff looks like it
is going to be worth the wait.

Digging in the dirt is the first single from the forthcoming
album, Us (which features his usual band of Tony Levin, David
Rhodes, etc as well as guest backing vocals by Shithead O'Connor).
It captures the feel of Don't Break THis Rhythm and Red Rain.
Repetitive, strong rhythm, and dark lyrics. A worthy successor to
Passion and 'Security'.

The video, a hodgepodge of assorted images drawn from Sledgehammer
and Claymation techniques, along with a liberal dose of insects and
worms, is labeled as a 'breakthrough' by MTV. Probably because
there's nothing but the same old formula to compare it to, since the
video is a re-hash of old styles we've seen before.

It's nice to see Peter Gabriel back, looking better than before
(the pony tail and grey hair are gone) with some serious new music!
I encourage everyone sick of the same old stuff, as well as
die-hard PG fans, to grab the new album!

Under protest, of course, for O'Connor.

Scott

	Irish ways and Irish Laws
		by John Gibbs

Once upon a time there was
        Irish Ways and Irish Laws
        Villages of Irish blood
        Waking to the morning

Then the Vikings came around (4)
Turned us up and turned us down
        Started building boats and towns
They tried to change our living
They tried to change our living

Cromwell and his soldiers came (1)
        Started centuries of shame
But they would not make us turn (2)
        We are a river flowing
        We're a river flowing

        Again, again the soldiers came
Burnt our houses stole our grain
Shot the farmers in the fields
        Working for a living
        Working for a living

800 years we have been down (3)
The secrets of the water sound
Has kept the spirit of a man
        Above the pain descending
        Above the pain descending

        Today the struggle carries on
I wonder will I live so long
To see the gates being opened up (4)
To a people and their freedom
        A people and their freedom

Notes
  (1) Oliver Cromwell landed in Ireland in August 1649 at the
head of a huge army, by May 1650 he had crushed opposition
in all but the West. (By 1652 the Irish population had
	fallen to .7 m. In 1641 it had been 1.5 m. By 1660 .5 m
cattle were being exported annually to England.)

  (2) Both Cromwell's and subsequent colonisation campaigns used the
twin techniques of "planting" English and Scotish settlers and
forcing some locals to change or "Turn" their religion to the
Protestant faith. So here he uses the ambiguity of the term
"turn" to echo both the image of the unbowed Irish peasant and
a metaphor for Irish History flowing like a un-turnable river.

  (3) The first viking invasions were in the 1100's.

  (4) "Gates" here evokes both images of the be-sieged walled cities of
the 17th century and also of the present day prison camps in the
North of Ireland which at the time the song was being written
(in the late 1970's early 1980's) were the subject of much political
campaigning including Hunger Strikes by the inmates.

Well, I finally got to hear this song [it is getting NO MTV play or radio play
as far as I can tell] because I have a show at college radio station [WRPI, Troy]
and they were sent the CD single. It's not bad. I don't think very many people
are looking forward to the album, though.

NEWSWEEK referred to it as `` an unnecessary album of standards...''.

Well, it comes out next TUESDAY,, Sept 22 in the USA.

I *still* haven't heard this song. It's not that I couldn't buy it, but
spending $5 on a CD-single where the only non album cut is 'You do something
to me' didn't seem worth it. Did you know that there are 2 (TWO) Cd-singles
released in the UK? One is exactly the same as the first one here in the US,
and the other has Success... and 2 other tracks (whose names I forget) that
apparently will also be on the album, since there is no indication of the
contrary on the sleece. To get that package I would have to spend ~$20, which
again I didn't. If anybody knows more about these tracks, please let us know.

The album will do. Can't wait for the Peter Gabriel album that includes a
duet with Sinead, which Rolling Stone liked (they gave Us ***, which isn't
a lot).

I just got the first of the two UK discs. It says disc 2 (avialable next week), but
they've had it two weeks at the store. It's typical UK (slightly higher than US) quaility
but probably not worth $10. I rabid about these things, though. I haven't listened to
the songs yet, because I'm absorbing the new Suzanne Vega single and disc.

I have seen the video twice on MTV, both times on "120 Minutes", along
with a short sound-bite-type interview with Sinead, who sat on a park
bench and explained that what she wanted to do was an album full of
her old favourite songs from growing up, including the show tunes she
would sing at Talent Nights. (Hence "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina",
which I am *greatly* looking forward to. I hope it is released as a
single.) I don't know if MTV will play the video other than on 120
Minutes, though. MTV has always seemed to think highly of Sinead,
presumably since she attracts media attention; I know that Dave Kendall
(host of 120 Minutes) is a legitimate Sinead fan, though.

As for radio play, I have heard "Success" once on Live 105 (KITS-FM, San
Francisco).

The (U.S.) CD single is sort of nice, actually, though it only has 3
songs. The cover is of the face of a child killed by death squads in
Guatemala (details on the back of the jewel box), which sort of
confirms my feelings about the video for "Success" and gives it a very
political reading.

Subject: Am I not your Girl
Status: OR

My friend Kevin bought *Am I Not Your Girl* as soon as it went
on sale in Canada yesterday morning. (Sept. 15)

The album is dedicated to the homeless of New York and to
"the angel Peter Gabriel".

Kevin writes: (he doesn't have access to e-mail yet).

Also included is a poem/statement on the leaf of the CD and cassette which
is less than uplifting. However, in it she dicusses child abuse, rape,
murder, addiction, death, self-esteem, fear, starvation and love. Just
about everything!

Further, Sinead writes on the album: "These are the songs I grew up
listening to. They are the songs that made me want to be a singer. That's
the 'why'".

Here are the tracks in order:
Why Don't You Do Right
Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered
Secret Love
Black Coffee
Success Has Made A Failure of Our Home
Don't Cry For Me Argentina
I Want To Be Loved By You
Gloomy Sunday
Love Letters
How Insensitive
Scarlet Ribbons
Dont Cry For Me Argentina (inst)

Plus (not writen up as an actual track) there is a 70 second statement by
Sinead right after the last track where she says she is not angry and she
is not a liar but the liars hate her. She continues to speak about God and
those who assasinated Jesus and she says that the biggest liars are those
"in the collars"( i.e. priests) and "The Holy Roman Empire"! She also talks
about death and how we all die anyways. It's really deep.

If you like old  jazz tunes of the 30s and 40s you'll like the album;
Sinead has not lost her voice. However it is a big change fron her other
stuff. And she is (as usual) quite open with her opinions.
I like it but I am a die hard Sinead worshipper!

Kevin

wears in the liner pictures on her new disc, "99.9 farheneit degrees".

Many thanks to Kevin for sharing all that info about the new album. But may I
just register a brief statement on my general sense of ire:

Why is the release date in Canada a full WEEK before the U.S. release? Last I
heard, the album would be out here on the 22nd. Has the date been moved up or
does she like them better than us? Well, that's prejudice, eh?

P.S. You guys should try not to judge a person by his/her shoes. Some people
were born with bad taste and can't help themselves.

:) For those of you in the US who are *really* curious about her shoes, check
out the ad for 'Am i not your girl?' that is featured in the latest Rolling
Stone, the one with U2 on the cover. I wouldn't call it bad taste, she's
apparently been hanging out with Lady Miss Kier lately :) Great photo!!

On the 16 October Bob Dylan celebrates the 30th anniversary of his first
record release. There will be a big concert in the NY Madison Square Garden
that will be broadcasted worldwide. Among the special guests are Eric Clapton
and (yes, that's why I post this) Sinead O'Connor.

"Newsweek" calls Sinead's album "unnecessary". Unnecessary for whom, I may ask?
Certainly not for Sinead.

I wonder if Sinead will go on tour with her new album. In my imagination it
would sound very strange if she sings the new songs AND the old ones (Troy,
Mandinka, Three Babies etc.) in a concert. But can you think of a Sinead
concert that does NOT include Troy!? But I hope she will manage it somehow and
we'll see her on stage very soon.

I really shouldn't be replying to this for I haven't seen
Sinead's nor Tori's shoes... But.... as a collector of weird
shoes (about 75 pairs of sneakers and 40-50 pairs of shoes)
I'm sure they are beautiful! And, I wouldn't be surprised to
see them as the "fashion statement" in a couple of years.

You see, I had DR. Martins shoes about 5 years ago
when I went to Germany. When I came back to the states, I
got laughed at... "What are those things on your feet?"
Anyway, needless to say, they seem to be the rage now.

Tori wears them big ol UGLY horse hoof shoes in the video for
"Silent All These Years"...and BOY are they UGLY...Sinead wears them
(same style) on the cover of the new album...AND BOY ARE THEY UGLY...
These shoes are NO doctor Martins...They have about a 4 inch heel, and
it flares out at the bottom in a BIG way...AND BOY ARE THEY UGLY...
As for Doctor Martins-> They are Ugly too..But NOT..I repeat.. NOT..as
UGLY as these...Doc's have been around FOREVER...so if you got laughed
at five years ago...Is no different than getting laughed at for them,
today...I think the same people are wearing those shoes...but the
Sub-Culture has become Mall culture...and therefor widened it's appeal.
Perry's Dream has come true....Doc martins are everywhere.

Well, our rad local music store Newbury Comics stayed
open 'til midnight last night to release "Am I Not.." and the
new Nine Inch Nails ep. I must say that, although I knew what
to expect, I was disappointed with Sinead's latest musical
excursion. I actually like "Success has made..." - she uses
her voice quite well on that, and the backup music isn't too
annoying; it's kind of like "Feel so different" rather than
the typical 30's stuff. Unfortunately, the rest of the album
doesn't quite live up to this, even. Her voice remains quite
calm ... none of the emotion I love from her. I had expected that
even if the backup music was lame, I would still appreciate
her voice - but I guess it wasn't meant to be.
I'm not giving up on Sinead, though. This album was probably
good for her ... it got rid of her Top 40 "Nothing COmpares" crowd,
it will remove her from the "rock-star" spotlight that really bugged
her, and it's a chance for her to do some music that she wanted to.
And like Wayne says "Led Zeppelin didn't write music everyone would
like - they left that for the BeeGees."
However, this is a disturbing trend. I felt "I DoNot Want..."
was a step in the wrong direction from "Lion & the Cobra", and now
she's continuing her descent into mellowness. Is she going to end up
touring with Frank SInatra or what?Is this what happens to people when
they start getting old?
The cover is great, though, if you can ignore the shoes. From
the ankles up, it's a really good picture of her ... just looking at
her makes me want to forgive the music inside the case.
Well, just my opinion. What do you all think?
				Cris

P.S. The new Nine Inch Nails is great! Too bad Sinead had to be
outdone by Trent Reznor. I thought I'd never see the day...

Both the Boston Phoenix and Q magazine really blast the new Sinead album.
And they both point out that she doesn't sing, but mostly whispers. I think
I can see the reason. It's a trend. She's been hanging around with Peter
Gabriel, and if you listen to *his* song Quiet Steam from the Digging in the
dirt CD-single, you can also hear him whisper. To my ears, that sounded
good. But then I still haven't heard the new Sinead.

'til later
(when i have given the album about 5 listens and decided if i like it or not)

Hi,

Errrr, I really don't understand what all the fuss is about. I really don't
understand why the reviewers blast Sinead's vocal performance along with her
choice of songs. Sinead chose to sing her faves, and she does a damn good job.
It's her 'Pin-ups'. I like the album a lot. [But then I ran out and bought
original versions of the Cole Porter songs featured in Red, Hot & Blue :) ]

I would *love* to see Sinead do a tour for this one! 'Troy' and 'Jackie'
performed by a big band!!! *THAT* would be rebellion!

Angelos
PS. I haven't paid attention to her ranting at the end of the CD, but what's
in the booklet is Sinead's theory of the world, as we know it from the old Spin
interview, condensed into a page.

The files are available in the archive as of yesterday evening.
(host: turbo.bio.net login: anonymous password: guest
directory: jitr) Thanks again to Jason.

Some notes on the image files -- I have decided to keep both
GIF and JPEG versions of the image scans, but not keep the
uuencoded versions. If you can use FTP, you should be able to
download an 8-bit binary file. (Remember to set your FTP client for
"binary" or "I" files when downloading .gif or .jpg files.)

Note that the JPEG format offers much better compression than GIF.
(But don't ask me about viewing programs; I am pretty much ignorant,
but there is information on Usenet in the newsgroup
alt.binaries.pictures.utilities.)

Also, the JITR archive host will be changing names (to "net.bio.net")

I got the album, and I feel really proud to add it to my collection. I sort of
hope she hasn't abandoned songs like Jerusalem and Mandinka. But I'm very glad
to see her branching out into other areas. I don't agree with all the critics
who find this album so strange. The strangest thing about it, IMHO, is that
the arrangements are so BIG (i.e. loud), and her voice is so small. No, I
don't think she's whispering. I can hear her. But it seems unbalanced. And it
seems very odd indeed that this woman with the strong voice chose to play
underneath the arrangements. I can't imagine that she felt intimidated. Not
Sinead!

So anyway, I think the high moments are: Why Don't You Do Right, Black Coffee,
I Want To Be Loved By You (which is actually where her voice is at its
stongest), Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered and Gloomy Sunday. Success Has
Made... failed to reach me in a meaningful way (except for the end, when she
repeats painfully "am I not your girl").

All in all I like it, I'm glad she did it, and I can't wait to see what she'll
do next.

P.S. That monologue at the end is pretty weird, following, as it does, that
jazzy arrangement of "Don't Cry For Me...". Yeah, she is angry. Now who was
it who said she was full of hate? Who provoked this anyway?

I made a comment earlier this week about Sinead's shoes.
And although I hadn't seen the picture, I figured they couldn't
be that bad, could they? Well, I just got her new album and
can now give a just opinion on her shoes...... I LIKE them.
I mean, they are not the type of shoes I would wear to a night
club in downtown Providence, but I think I would wear them.
If you haven't noticed, Platform shoes are coming back into
style. And In a few months, perhaps, you will see someone
walking down the street and your going to say, "Hey, she
has Sinead shoes on" If you think about it, Sinead was the
first female (that I know of anyway) to shave her head.
Now, everywhere you go, that's the remarks you hear, "Hey,
it's Sinead"

Well, enough of her shoes...... I can't wait to hear this thing...

=ana ;-)

HI,

I just saw the second CD single of Success. It has two tracks *not* on the
album:
_My heart belongs to daddy_ and _Someone to watch over me_.

Just for the completeness of the upcoming updated discography.

And btw, her backing vocals for PG's 'come talk to me' are pretty good!!

	 Stations fading into the unknown...'

Hi,

The latest issue of Time, features a mini-review of 'Am I not your GIrl?'
which is the first favourable review I have seen! She repeats AINYG 26 times
in 'Success'!! I never bothered to count, but apparently the reviewer there
did! :) She is also featured in the 'Year 2000' special issue of Time,
where she talks about how the future can be improved. Not surprisingly
she puts forth her theory that child abuse is to blame for everything.
But it is interesting that she is the *only* musician featured (if I remember
correctly). Is Ensign records a subsidiary of Time-Warner or something? ;)

In other Sinead related news, she will be the guest at this weeks Saturday
night live, so set your VCR's. According to the list of musicians TV
appearances on talk shows, a recording session of hers will be featured
in next week's 'In Concert', so that should be interesting too!

She can also distinctly be heard in the tracks 'Come talk to me', and 'Blood of
Eden' in the new PG album.

AND, AINYG has climbed from #7 to #6 in the UK charts this week. It will be
interesting to see how she will do stateside.

Has anybody heard any tour plans?

Angelos
