It seems that this scanned Sinead pic was never meant to
be!!! Now the scanner is down in our lab here at school,
it should be up within a couple of days so I will scan it
as soon as they fix the scanner. For those of you who mailed
me with requests for the pic I was going to send you individual
TIFFS of the pic, but I have someone who will convert it for
me, then she will mail it to the administrator and you can FTP
it. Sorry about the delay...

Did anyone else on this list see the article Sinead wrote in the latest issue
of _Ms._ magazine? I thought it was very enlightening, and Sinead reveals a
lot about her personal life.

The article was excerpted from a book, _Leading Lives: Irish Women in Britain_.
I will try to transcribe it when I get a chance, but I'm in the process of
moving. It is a good issue of _Ms._--perhaps some of you men could seize this
opportunity to buy it and learn more about feminism....later, Kim.
P.S. It is Volume II, number 6, with a red cover that says "Feminism and Real
 Life" in large black letters

Well, first off, I'm new to the group (probably been on about
two weeks). Second, I got the message about posting the correct
lyrics for the lion and the cobra. It'll be awhile, but I'm
sure that Michael saw it as well, and I know Jason Boardman did,
so maybe someone who has access to the ftp server can just
make the corrections that need to be made.

Also, I was just reading through some of the archive files
for JITR, and it was really strange reading all the concert
reviews. Doesn't that seem like ages ago? Actually, I saw
Sinead twice that year (both times in Atlanta and both times
for free). Next time she comes around, all of you should
seriously consider volunteering to usher for the show. That's
how I saw her for free at the Fox and at Chastain Park. And
plus, when you're an usher, you're pretty much free to roam
the place, and you're not confined to any particular section.
At the Fox, I sat on the 10th row from the stage. At Chastain
Park, I was standing right next to the stage (I could have
jumped up and touched her if I'd wanted to-- that's how close
it was) Also at Chastain, another friend and I got backstage
and saw her wandering around. I could've gotten her autograph
but I thought that would've been too cheesy. I did say hello
to her before she got in her van to leave, and she said hi back
and waved at my friend and I as the van was pulling away. It
was pretty cool to be that close to her. She was a lot smaller
than I thought she was. And she was still packing the Marlboros.
I would've thought that after singing for about 1.2 hours, her
throat would've been too sore to smoke (I used to smoke, and I
know how it feels). Anyhow, perhaps not interesting to y'all,
but I thought I'd share.

Furthermore, is there anyone on this mailing list that lives in
Europe that could maybe swing buying a few imports for me? I'd
pay full price of course. Also, does anyone have a videotape
copy of any of her videos besides JITR and Nothing compares 2 u?
I've seen the red hot and blue one as well as Mandinka and I want
your (hands on me). I've never seen Troy or Three babies or even
the old JITR that someone was talking about. If anyone had her
videos on tape, I'd gladly trade something or pay for it. Let's
get this thing going again! (And, no, I haven't read the article
in _Ms._ magazine. Maybe later since my roommate is an ardent
feminist and she gets it every once in a while)

It's nice to see that people are still interested in Sinead.

Dana asked about Sinead videos. I have several scattered over several
video tapes (since I cannot manage to have one cued up :) ).

I have the following:

Sinead VH1 live performance
Sinead Arsenio Hall performance and interview I (R H & B)
Sinead Arsenio Hall performance and interview II (Irish ways)
SInead at MTV awards
Sinead at SNL
Sinead at MTV Unplugged
Lifetime Special (The year of the horse- partial because of Gulf War)
Kurd Aid
My special child
Emperor's new clothes
Nothing compares 2 U
Mandinka
You do something to me
Sacrifice (part from ABC Two Rooms special)

I know she has videos for 'Troy', 'JITR' and 'Three babies' because I have
seen them but haven't reached for the remote fast enough.

How is my list? Any volunteers with an extra VCR willing to go through my
disorganized Videotapes and make the definitive Sinead collection?

Angelos

Hi !!
For the past couple of weeks, my local station (Live 105) has been playing
a song by some group with Sinead doing backup vocals. What do you all know
about this? What's the name of the group, and does she do anything on the
rest of the album? Also, what else has she been up to? Has she withdrawn
from the music business after her taste of stardom?
Hope somebody out there can bring me up to date. Thanks !!

Cris posted not too long ago about hearing a new song with Sinead
singing backup. My only guess is that it's Jah Wobble's Invaders
of the Heart(?) "Visions of You" single. I know she sings on
another song on their album "Rising Above Bedlam" but for the life
of me, I can't remember what it was. I saw the album here in
Atlanta as an import and they wanted $16 for it -- a ripoff in my
opinion considering she only sings on 2 songs, and I'm not real
fond of "Visions of You" to begin with. BTW, have any of you
noticed that Jah plays bass on "last day of our acquaintance"?

Regarding Angelo's post, I have some of the videotaped items you
posted. I, for one, never saw the Arsenio interview. Was it
pretty interesting? I heard that she was flirting with Arsenio
the entire interview. I only saw "you do something to me" once,
and that was when it was on ABC a while back; I know they sell
the videotape around here, but I didn't particularly care to shell
out $20 or so for the one video I wanted. Same goes for the
MTV 120 minutes video. I've NEVER seen My special child video.
How does it go? I've never seen Troy or 3 Babies either. My
boyfriend said he saw Troy a long time ago, and that it was pretty
good (dark, candles burning, etc.) And yes, Angelo, I am STILL
interested in Sinead's music. I've liked her since I was a junior
in high school (1987). Which brings to mind, how many of the
readers here have liked Sinead from the beginning, and how many
started liking her after "IDNWWIHG"? Inquiring minds want to know...

Dana asks:

hmm, i can't say i knew about Sinead from the very beginning, but i
was interested before the first album was released here in the US --
both from having heard the "The Captive" song she did with the Edge,
and from discussion on rec.music.gaffa... i can't remember the exact
dates, but i remember searching MTV and Much Music (which my friend
Roy got via satellite) for the "Troy" video...

when i caught it, i was a bit put off -- i can't quite understand why,
now, but i bafflingly decided i wasn't interested...

however. Roy, who had patiently assisted my in scanning the airwaves,
was hooked, and kept humming it (he would sing "you should have kept
the light on" of "off" to his little nephew, who would run over and
flick the light in the opposite direction -- made a sort of remote
control, like the Clapper (tm) ;) ANYway, after a week, i broke down
and bought the album -- and loved it.

A sad note: a few years later, Roy passed away after a difficult
illness. Troy remains one of my favorite songs of Ms. O'Connors, and
a fond reminder of my friend :)

footah!

The first tune I ever heard by her was Never get old off The Lion and the Cobra.
I was simply blown away by it. I became a die hard fan instantly. I still
believe it's one of the best pop records I've ever heard. I immediately bought
IDNWWIHG as soon as it was released and instantly stopped being a die hard
fan.

I'd agree that her song writing has improved but I don't like how she uses
her voice. On TLATC the power of her voice is simply incredible. Listening
to Never Get Old, Troy, etc still raises the hair on the nape of my
neck and sends shivers down my spine. There isn't a single track on IDNWWIHG
which comes close. And given her more recent efforts (the Jah Wabbles work
as well as the Cole Porter tune), I expect she'll never return to her earlier
style.

At least I can still listen to TLATC.

Following Greg's example, I will take this opportunity to talk about how I
got into Sinead's music.

On my way to Boston from Athens, Greece, in August 1987, I had a stopover in
Zurich. I bought either Melody Maker or New Musical Express to check out the
new music in the UK, figuring that this would be my last chance to inform
myself musically before Grad school. On the cover was this skinhead girl/woman
called Sinead. I immediately discarded her as being some neo-nazi/skinhead/punk
chick heading some Bow wow wow-type band. I didn't even read the article.

In late 1987 I discovered that radio in the US wasn't exclusively filled with
guitarz and top 40 pap, and started listening to WFNX. And they played the
song 'Jackie' at 1 am one night. I called the station, and found out that
the singer was Sinead O'Connor. And so the next day I went to the MIT Coop and
bought 'The Lion and The Cobra'. Needless to say I was instantly hooked.
'Troy', 'Just like u said it would b' and 'Jackie' are my favorite songs
from that album.

I bought 'IDNWWIHG' the day of its release and was once again impressed.
(OK, not as much as with TLATC). Songs like 'last day of our acquaintance',
and 'stretched on your grave' were amazing. Seeing her live also increased the
effect. Of course, I have been following her work ever since, and I still
haven't been disappointed.

If only she would start writing songs again...

Hm, I haven't been on the list in a while, but since this was sent to me too,
i thought i'd add my little comment :)

I guess i first heard of Sinead on gaffa, when the lion and the cobra
came out. I don't remember the time frame of such things too well, that was a
while ago! I can't remember how i first heard the album, most likely I
borrowed it from Dave Steiner (dunno if he's on this list.. hm) but i know
i immediately bought it for myself.. I loved every bit of it from the
beginning. It's still a favorite album.

It took me about a week to get into IDNWWIHG, but once i did I really liked
it too, they are very different, but both good for different moods and
feelings.

What's this subject "NEW SINEAD"?? something new? something in the works!?
Hm, maybe I better get back on this list..

Well, the "sinead familiarization" stories have all been
interesting. I myself cannot remember exactly how I came
to love Sinead O'Connor's music. I know I was still in
high school and I used to always listen to the Georgia State
radio station, Album 88. I remember driving back from
school and I heard "Will you be my lovvv-errrr...and will you
be my... mama!" And I thought, "Who in the hell is THAT?"
The DJ said it was Sinead, and I remember going up to a
used record store here in Atlanta (BTW, if you're in Atlanta,
make sure you check out Wax n Facts in Little Five Points),and
I found the LP (I was too young and too poor to own a CD
player). It was a promotional copy, and it was only $4. I've
cherished that album ever since. I have it on CD now, but
that has to be the best $4 I ever spent musically. IMHO,
I think "IDNWWIHG" blows compared to the LATC. I mean, it's
good in that quiet, pensive, folksy sort of way, but I really
liked the howlin' Sinead on Lion. This is kinda stupid, but
you know what I've always wondered? How many pairs of Doc
Martens does this woman own? I've got one pair and it cost
me about $90. I know they're cheaper in London, but I wonder
by how much. She's gotta own about 20 pairs. Just a thought.

The first song I ever heard was Mandinka. I remember being totally
blown away by that voice. Later on I saw the video to it, which
didn't really impress me. It was a weak video, bad lip synching,
sometimes she'd be playing lead on that guitar then magically
switch to rhythm guitar! But of course one thing saved the whole
video was her appearance! I couldn't believe how beautiful she was!
(is!) I think I had to be one of the first people in Tennessee to
like her, at least in my little hick town she got bashed left and
right whenever mentioned. I guess we are all in agreement that
TLATC is better than IDNWWIHG, but I really like both of them. I
think her next album (whenever that may be) will have a good mix
of the two after hearing The Value of Ignorance which seems to have
more of that Lion&Cobra-esque sound.

Just my $.02 worth..

I remembered hearing that "people in the (music making) business
listen to Sinead O'Connor, and she's finally released an album so
everyone can hear why she's so fabulous" (I have no memory where that
idea came from - I think I read something like that somewhere).
"Hands" was getting a lot of airplay, and I was in a used record store
here in Boston, and decided to pick it up since it looked to be worth
it. I have not regretted it since. :)

I beleive my first experience of Sinead O'Connor goes back
to the summer of 1988. A friend gave me a tape of "The Lion
and the Cobra" to listen to, saying "this stuff is great!"

It was love at first sight (or at least, at first hearing).

It's only much later that that friend showed me the album's
cover. My reaction: "Wew! She's bald and looks like a freak!"
But I loved her for her music and her singing, so it didn't
matter how she looked.

Then came "I do not Want what I Haven't Got", and the charm
endured.

Then I saw the video for "The Emperor's New Clothes". It was
the first time I ever her moving (all I had seen previously
were album covers). My reaction: "Wew! What a WEIRD way to
dance!" But I loved her for her music and her singing, so it
didn't matter how she danced.

Then came all the stuff of Spring 91 (short shows, controverses,
etc...). My reaction: "Wew! What a WEIRD way to handle a
tour! I only hope I can get a whole concert!" But I loved her
for her music and her singing, so it didn't matter how she behaved.
And I DID get the whole show!

That's how it is for me. Now I only live with the hope that
she'll make another album sooner or later. And I look forward
to seeing those movies she's supposed to play in...

Well, for the record, last time I checked I was definately
a female (regarding Jean's "his/her" in his/her message).
If I stumble across any new evidence that I'm not, I'll be
sure to let you all know.

BTW, has anybody actually seen this "Ghost of Oxford Street"
or "Hush a bye Baby" stuff? That's great that Sinead's going
to be playing Joan of Arc. Actually (totally unrelated) I
just saw Alien 3 on the release date, and to me, that movie
was loaded with Joan of Arc references. Anybody who's seen
it noticed this? And of course, you gotta love that haircut.
Hmmmmm, I wonder where they got THAT idea.

Dana was asking about "Still Listening". I hae it on two singles, one a
CD and the other vinyl.
The vinyl is on a Troy single with "Still Listening" on the B-side. Catalog
number ENYX 610.
The CD is on a Mandinka single with 3 other songs, one is "Still Listening".
Catalog number 659712.

Both records are on Chrysalis.

I paid $6.79 for Troy and $9.98 for Mandinka. Interestingly, I bought
the CD before the vinyl (May and July 1988 respectively).

Still Listening is quite a good song.

Now, since everyone else is doing it, I'll relate my Sinead Discovery Story.

I was returning home from my summer job late one night when I heard this
really GREAT song (It was Mandinka or Jerusalem, I forget which) on the
radio. I thought it was a new Siouxie song. The KROQ DJ, Louis I think,
said many callers also thought it was Siouxie but was actually this new
person Shenaid O'Connor. He only said the name once and not being real
current on my Irish spelling, I badly mangled it in my notebook of "Songs
I Need To Get". This was summer 1987, it was not until 6 or 8 months later
that I finally found out who it really was when I bought "The Lion And
The Cobra". That was by far, the best record I bought that year, and still
one of my favorites. Since then I buy all Sinead O'Connor (Much better
spelling now) music on sight and she was immediatly lofted into my list
of "The Four Greatest Bands On The Planet".

I too wish she would put out some new stuff.

Just read the article in Ms. magazine the other day. Interesting,
but short. It was nice to actually read something that was about
her AND by her, not some unauthorized biographer. I remember in
one part though, she mentioned that her relationships with females
have improved primarily due to a "very physical" encounter she had
with another female. What does this mean? (Let me make myself
clear: I don't care if Sinead is gay, straight, bi, whatever. . .
I'll still like her music. I was just wondering if anyone else
could shed any light on her comment.)

The revised lyrics are almost finished. Only a few questions
left:
1. In Jerusalem the original lyrics said:
"Came down and the lady said it"
I don't think it's "Came down" does anyone else have any ideas?
2. Also in Jerusalem the original lyrics said:
"probably next time aughta be the last time"
I have trouble hearing "probably" any other ideas?

I am going to have to transcribe Just Call Me Joe on my own,
if anyone out there can offer any ideas on what she is saying
please send them to me.

When I am finished with this I will need some people to do
a final proofread and make sure we all pretty much agree.
If you would be interested in doing this, mail me and I will
send you a copy when finished. The final copy that I send
to the moderator for the FTP site will be in 2 formats, one
in ASCII and one in a nice Post Script format for all you
who wish to print/laserprint a nice copy.

KaTemas???

yep :)

i suspect a fair percentage of y'all read r.m.gaffa/LoveHounds, but
just in case, i am announcing the:

1992 Northeast North American KaTemas Party

to be held in cambridge (next to boston), massachusetts, u.s. of a. on
the weekend of August 1, as part of the international celebration of
Kate Bush's birthday (July 30, 1958)

last year, parties were held across the u.s.a., the uk, finland,
australia, etc... i hosted the Boston-area party, and had guests from
new jersey, new york, canada, etc. this year, i have already had
RSVPs from people in CA and GA -- so don't let the distance deter you!
;)

planned activities include:

* live music (featuring Ecto founder jessica on vox!)
* official videos from KaTe, Sinead, Tori, Enya, the Sugarcubes, etc.
etc. etc.
* non-official vidoes ;) from KaTe and others...
* musical rarities (including some real treasures!)
* photos, posters, magazines, buttons, and generally rare and nifty
stuff from KaTe et al...
* lots of CDs (LOTS of CDs ;) by alternative female musicians (and
hopefully a few extra CD players with headphones... :)
* huge quantities of homemade pizza (if you were there last year, fear
not! i'll make it all in advance this time :)
* amazing anecdotes and stunning stories of fame and fandom!!
* lots of way cool people you've never met in person before (and this
was by far the best part of last years party :)
* contests and prizes!!!
* phone calls and net access to the other parties spread across the
world...

limited lodging is available (and i am sure we can find more
volunteers to put people up) -- the party is officially saturday. but
friday night we'll be having a blast setting up, and sunday we will
go sightseeing in cambridge and boston (and stop by some of the best
CD and bookstores in the northeast!!)

last years party literally changed my life, and this one should be
far better!!!! so RSVP me:

In regards to what Jessica posted about hearing the Sinead/Karen
Finley version of JITR, I sure as hell hoped they played the
EDITED version. Even though I've got the 12" (mine doesn't have
an edited version, but I'm told the "Married to the Mob" one does)
it's pretty scary listening to Ms. Finley. I'm all for free
speech and such, but I don't think you'd see me attending one of
her "performance art" shows.

Hi !!
Does anybody out there know where I can get a copy of the 12-inch
for "I want your (hands on me)"? I've been searching everywhere for it,
because I heard it has the version with MC Lyte. If anyone knows where I
could get my (hands on it), please let me know.

Then you're missing something. Listening to Karen Finley on CD is like
listening to Laurie Anderson -- you get some of it, but you really need to see
it in person.

I actually think Finley's "Jump" is pretty funny.

edited? Hmm. dunno, i'd have to hear both adn then tell you..
but i don't *think* it was an edited version, it was pretty offensive and,
yes, frieghtening. However i did listen to it in full, by choice, and kinda
liked that they played it on the radio. food for thought indeed!!!

I was told by a co-worker that Ms. Finley used to include as part of her
performance art piece, the act of administering an enema to herself with -
yams. Well, it boggles my mind. Do they have to be squished up really a lot,
does she do this facing toward or away from the audience, and perhaps most
importantly - what does it mean? So, this at least answers the question of
what she does with the yams, but what about the waffles?

P.S. If anyone on the list is in New York, or can come to New York without a
great amount of hassle, you may be interested to know that Ms. Finley is
performing in Lincoln Center's Serious Fun festival this summer.

P.P.S. I've heard that her act is different now.

I have completed a new 8 PAGE discography
for Sinead O'Connor. I mailed it to the
administrator, and it should be available on
the ftp site soon. I have sent it in two
formats: one ascii copy, and one postscript
copy for nice laserprinted copies. I have
asked the administrator to notify the list when
it is available in the ftp site. Hope you enjoy
it! Let me know what you think!

The files are up and available in the JITR archive on turbo.bio.net
in the directory pub/jitr.

The files are discog.asc (ASCII version) and discog.ps (PostScript
version). The uuencoded compressed tar file is there as well
(discog.tar.Z.uu) suitable for mailing your friends as a package if you
like.

thanks to Jason for preparing the new discography, and thanks to
Michael for making it available... one minor note: the correct
directory on turbo.bio.net is ~/jitr, rather than ~/pub/jitr --
just type "cd jitr" and you'll be there :)

*sigh* so many singles to buy ;)

"The Yam Jam", or perhaps that's just the title of one of the
remixes), you'll hear detailed descriptions of the various
orificies that she fills with yams and Belgian waffles. :-)

I have read that Sinead appears in Bob Geldof's current video. I
can't remember the name of the song, and only saw the video once - I
didn't spot our heroine. I don't know if the video has reached the wrong
side of the pond yet.

Also, I remember that someone was looking for the _Mandinka_ 12"
recently. A friend of mine (who does not have e-mail access) has a copy of
this for sale (he may also have other Sinead stuff, I'm not sure). It
contains _Mandinka_, _Mandinka (instr. dub mix)_ and _Drink Before The
War_. The catalogue number is enyx611.

Can somebody confirm this. Oh , I wish it could be true...

Hi !!
Looks like there's a lot of cool stuff on the discography. So, the next
question is, how can I get a hold of some of this stuff? If anyone out there
knows of any good stores in the Boston area where I could get some of those
old singles, or has copies their willing to sell or copy, could you please
let me know? Thanks a lot !!!

I think I heard on some MTV news thing that
Sinead planned on releasing another album this
fall. This seems kind of unsubstansiated to me
but I hope so. All I know is it hasn't shown up
on the release list yet.
