Hi there. The following is a somewhat incomplete Sinead O'Connor US
discography. I tried to put it in chronological order. It is hoped that it
will eventually include all of Sinead's output as well as her appearances
on other people's records (and other people's appearances on her records).
If you have any additions, corrections, or other stuff, please mail them to
me. NO RUMORS, PLEASE. A couple of things I know are missing: the names of
the "Stretched" remixes, whether "Compares" and "Emperor" had 7" to
go with them (they may have, but I am not sure), and her appearances on
World Party's records. If anyone has seen fit to cover any of her songs (I am
not aware of this), let me know about that too.
Thanx. Hope you enjoy it!

An addition to the the Sinead O'Connor discography:

"Nothing Compares 2 U" (the usual version) appears on a cassette sampler
entitled "New Route Sampler" (along with some interesting stuff by others).

Not a special version, but it should be included for completeness.

"New Route Sampler" is a sampler cassette that I got mail order for $1 P&H
in March. I saw it advertised in New Route magazine, a small freebie mag
I found in a local club.

The cassette, marked "For promotional purposes only. Not for sale.", has
one cut each by the Silos, Scrawl, Blue Aeroplanes, Eleventh Dream Day,
Luka Bloom, Billy Syndrome, Heretix, Caterwaul, Toad the Wet Sprocket,
OK Savant, and Sinead. This is the first in their series of samplers, but
I don't know if there are any more.

>From the liner notes:

New Route Publishing, Inc., a subsidiary of Joseph-Fox Communications, Inc.
73 Spring Street
New York, NY 10012

(212) 941-5600

Whether or not the cassette is still available (or if New Route is still in
business), I can't say. I've only seen it that one time, but it apparently
was not their first issue. Good luck in getting it.

The first SOC album contains an extra track in the CD
version. It's placed as the last track, and it's called
"Just Call Me Joe" (as far as i can remember, without
having the album by me). It features SOC with an intense
voice (low and pleasant as always), and a slow, heavy guitar.

Sinead rarely does interviews but I have one she did recently in a British
magazine - I will post it up on here after Christmas if you want (it is
rather large).

Could someone also tell me what happened recently in America when Sinead
visited - in England we didn't hear much except she wouldn't play the
Star Spangled Banner and Frank Sinatra called her a spoilt child or
something - I'd be interested to hear the real story...

I've only just joined this mailing list so this may have appeared before
but I thought I would post up some lyrics:-

Troy

I'll remember it, in Dublin in a rainstorm
Sitting in the long grass in the summer, keeping warm
I'll remember it, every restless night
We were so young then, we thought that everything we could possibly do was righ
t
and we moves stolen from our very eyes
and I wondered where you went to, and tell me, when did the light die

You will rise, you'll return
Like a phoenix from the flames
You will learn
You will rise
You'll return
You are what you are, there is no other Troy for you to burn

I never meant to hurt you
I swear I didn't mean those things I said
I never meant to do that to you
Next time I'll keep my hands to myself instead
Oohh does she love you?
What do you want to do?
Does she need you like I do?
Do you love her? Is she good for you?
Does she hold you like I do?
Do you want me?
Should I leave?
I know you're always telling me that you love me,
it's just sometimes I wonder if I should believe
oh I love you
God I love you
I'd kill a Dragon for you
or die.

And I will rise, I will return
the phoenix from the flame
I have learned
I will rise and you'll see me return
be what I am, there is no other Troy for me to burn

Well you should have left the light on, you should have left the light on
then I wouldn't have tried
you'd never have known
and I wouldn't have pulled you tighter
no, I wouldn't have pulled you close
I wouldn't have screamed "Now I can't let you go" if the door wasn't closed
no, I wouldn't have pulled you to me
no, I wouldn't have kissed your face
You wouldn't have begged me to hold you if we hadn't have been there in the fir
st place
oh but I know you wanted me to be there oh oh
Every look that you threw told me
but you should have left the light on
you should have left the light on

When the flame burned away
but you're still spitting fire
makes no difference what you say
you're still a liar
you're still a liar
you're still a liar...

I've been requested to find out if anyone knows whether Sinead has ties to
the IRA. I hadn't heard of any, but maybe someone else has heard otherwise?
I'd assume she'd be vaguely sympathetic, as are many Irish people, but that's
the extent of my assumptions.

Ok, all of you sinead fans/poetry scholars, out there, here is a question I've
been asking myself ever since I first encountered this poem last year. Does
anyone know if our beloved them-baldhead was inspired by William Butler Yeats'
"No Second Troy" when she wrote Troy? There is no actual similarity in the
words of the two poems, except for Yeats' last line, but here, I'll let you
judge for yourselves.

No Second Troy

Why should I blame her that she filled my days
With misery, or that she would of late
Have taught to ignorant men most violent ways
Or hurled the little streets upon the great,
Had they but courage to equal desire?

What could have made her peaceful with a mind
That nobleness made simple as fire,
With beautylike a tightened bow, a kind
That is not natural in an age like this,
Being high and solitary and most stern?
Why, what could she have done, being what she is?
Was there another Troy for her to burn?

                                -- William Butler Yeats, 1910.
                                [reprinted w/o permission from _Norton's

                                Anthology of Modern Poetry_]

The woman referred to is Maud Gonne, a fellow Irish revolutionary whom Yeats
courted throughout his life, except for the interval when he was married, from
1914 until the death of his wife. Though the circumstances of the pain are
different from Sinead's, I think the underlying desperation is similar. And
the similarity between this last line and Sinead's chorus is too striking too
ignore.
A great poem, BTW, IMNSHO, but then, it's by Yeats.
Peace, all.
Greg.

As promised, I will post up a *big* review with Sinead from a British
pop magazine after Christmas but I seem to remember Sinead stating that
*all* of her songs are based on her past experiences. 'Feels so Different;'
is an especially good example.

Argghh!! I'm so annoyed - a friend phoned me up last night to say she had
just seen a Sinead O'Connor film on TV and I hadn't taped it! (This is in
England by the way...) I didn't even know that she had been in this film
and I know nothing about the film itself - perhaps someone could enlighten
me. (I know it's a real long shot - but did anyone reading this tape it??)

I've had a couple of messages regarding my Troy lyrics - both informing
me that I was wrong - sorry if I was but I wrote them down from listening
to the song. Interestingly though there were a couple of clashes in what
people said - I'll have to listen to the song a few more times before
I elaborate much but I was told one line was 'and we moves stolen from
our very eyes' whilst someone else told me it was 'and the moon, stolen
from our very eyes'. One person told me the line 'Oohh does she love you?'
was wrong and should have been 'Oh, and I sure love you' - I very much
doubt this as this is an American expression and it is very unlikely thing
for a irish Londoner to say.

Stuart
cazsjw@uk.ac.leeds.dcs

PS So I don't make any more mistakes of posting things that have already
been mentioned perhaps someone could post me any past messages that I may
have missed - the first one I received was entitled 'Re: Early Sinead Stuff'
and was from Beth about Heroin. Thanks 8-)

Did anyone see THE WEEK IN ROCK this week with Kurt Loder? The lead story was
that Sinead had reported to some magazine/newspaper that she had been held
against her will and threatened with physical violence by Prince one night
this week while she had been visiting him, alone.

Prince's spokesperson said "I don't know what she's talking about. It never
happened." but Sinead is said to be sticking by her story. She said that she
had been visiting him at about 5:30 in the morning and that he had started
screaming at her and berating her, threatening her with violence and was
laughing at how scared she was, amused at how "his power as a man was
intimidating her". Sinead said "I can understand him being upset with me, but
I don't understand him threatening to beat me, to use physical violence." Who
knows if this story will develop further but Kurt Loder usually does a good
job of following up these things...

Has anyone picked up the CD5 to george Michael's "Freedom 90"? Well, in the
'Back To Reality' mix he samples the violin line from "I Am Stretched On Your
Grave" [as well as the rhythm from Soul II Soul's "Back To Life" and the hook
from Neneh Cherry's "Buffalo Stance"!] without giving credit. Allegedly Sinead
[and the guy from THE WATERBOYS, who co-wrote the song] are going to sue George
for 'sampling without a warrant' :-)

What will they think of next? Basically I guess it is good, but I always thought
that in 12" dance remixes sampling is anything goes!

Good mix...I was kinda hoping that George Michael had sampled that stuff
"with a warrant".

Also, anyone heard more about the prince/sinead problem? I've heard the
"standard" story as distributed to the local radio station and MTV, but is
there any other news?
