>Hello! Is anybody out there ?!?

Well, *I* am, anyway. I very much enjoyed your rec.music.misc post. The only
things I might add are

    1) We forget (and I'll probably be insulting a lot of folks out
there with this ;-)) that she's still very young. I sincerely
doubt she had any idea the uproar such a simple request would
cause. If she had, she might have avoided the venue
altogether. I certainly don't think it was a publicity stunt.

    2) Anybody who puts their pride in themselves and/or their nation
into one little song has a serious identity problem.

A woman on the radio this morning said that Sinead was practicing censorship by
asking the stadium not to play the anthem. An interesting idea, but I don't
think it really holds water. She didn't tell them they *couldn't* play the
national anthem, she merely told them they had to choose.

Why do I get the feeling that if Bruce Springsteen had done the same thing in
Ireland we'd have a different controversy on our hands?

Liz

not a full-fledged review, just some shortly-post-show impressions and quotes.

"Thank you very much. Thank you very much indeed."

Some of the time she seemed fed up -- couldn't say whether with the audience
(as usual there were plenty of boors who ignored her requests to be quiet for
the quiet songs so she could hear herself), the sound system, the stress of
the national-anthem thing, or just the rigors of touring. At other times,
though, she was pretty into it. She did say she was very tired (but added
once, "but who gives a shit?"). Oh yeah, at the end she apologized
(unnecessarily, I think) for being harsh to the people who wouldn't shut up.

Opening act was Flight of Mavis. I confess I used the opportunity to practice
sign language with my companion and didn't pay too much attention to the music.

Set included everything from _I Do Not Want_ except "You Cause As Much Sorrow"
and "I Do Not Want," plus "Get Up, Stand Up," "Jerusalem," "Put Your Hands On
Me," and an a cappella song about Ireland (don't know if original or not).
Encores: "Black Is The Color of My True Love's Hair" (old folk song), "My
Special Child" (new Sinead song).

Favorite quote of the evening: "To you men -- if there're any nice ones out
there -- I'm available. You have to be over 30 and drug-free. And I like
stubble." Oh well, I have at best 3 out of 4 going for me, and the 4th I can't
do much about )-8. (So much for Hugh Harris, I guess.)

Lots of people in black, or goths, or whatever you call them, in the audience.
Black lipstick, crucifixes, and all. A few Irish flags being waved, no U.S.
flags that I saw (unless you count the "when it's radical to be liberal, flags
will burn" green white and orange one on my Michelle Shocked t-shirt).

"If there's anyone who wants to sing the national anthem, could you please
wait till the end."

All quotes guaranteed almost verbatim but not quite.

Absolutely. I'm sure Sinead objected on principle, and she had every right
to do so.

Having a national anthem played conveys a political message (of support for
American nationalism), a message with which Sinead obviously does not agree.

I don't know whether Sinead sings any particularly political songs, but
imagine if KT (if she toured again...) sang songs such as _Army_Dreamers_ and
_Breathing_ - KT would certainly also refuse to be associated with an anthem
which would convey opposing sentiments and trivialise her views.

If she realised that the hordes would start such a jihad, she would be even
more determined to stick up for her principles. Of course, several DJs are
hardly "hordes" and don't represent the American public (although after
reading this discussion, I'm not so sure...)

National anthems do not get played at rock shows in Britain (indeed, there
would probably be an outcry if one *was* played). Theatres, however, are a
different kettle of fish - they are quite commonplace at plays and musicals.

As I understand it, Sinead doesn't allow ANY national
anthems, including her own, to be played before her concerts,

Hello there fellow Love-Hounds--
The current Sinead controversy has hit close to home here in the
Capital District area in New York, and so I decided to throw in my
typical two cents' worth. Sinead is scheduled to play at Saratoga
Perfomring Arts Center (affectionately known to locals as SPAC) on
September 2, and there have been recent rumours of her show being
cancelled and/or banned because of her refusal to have the national
anthem played in New Jersey. What I basically have to say about
this whole thing is that it's pretty ridiculous; as many others have
said, I can't ever remember attending a rock concert at which the
national anthem was played. Sports events, yes...concerts, no. So
I don't see what the big stink is about Sinead's refusal to have the
anthem played; why should she be treated differently than any other
performer??
  That's it for now....

                                               All the best,

The local custom of playing the national

So why does a rock concert have to be any different than any
other type of gathering? Does a rock performer automatically
get the right to change things as they see fit? Maybe Sinead
has more to say than, say, a Japanese baseball team, but if
either one of them comes to our country, wouldn't it simply be
courtesy on either of their parts to respect the wishes of
their hosts? This country has a sad history of bigotry against
almost every nationality on Earth, and incidents such as these
	will continue it.

The funniest thing about this is that if an
American performer were to travel to Europe and do the same
thing, the performer would probably be criticized as
another "ugly American" by the Europeans, and with good
	reason.
After traveling to Europe recently, I can tell you from
experience that there are many "ugly Americans" over there
and we should be doing as much as we can to foster respect
between all countries. I am not as outraged as you might
portray me to be, Lazlo; I just think that Sinead should,
as an international personality, strive to promote respect
among people. Highly visible people should always be
conscious of their actions. Lazlo, you don't sound like
the kind of person who forms stereotypical opinions, but
I'm certain that someone less educated than yourself could
look at this incident and form some incorrect opinions
and make sweeping generalizations about other rock performers,
or the Irish people, or whatever.

I think you are getting a little out of hand in your
condemnation of anyone who disagrees with Sinead in
this matter. Obviously, flags and the Pledge of
Allegiance are not commonplace in most concert venues
in the United States, but certainly it would not harm
you or any performer if they were. Anyone who objected
to displays of your so-called "knee-jerk" patriotism
could simply wait and enter the concert after the
two minute offense to their individualism. I didn't
say that I would like for all concert halls to be
tributes to the American fight for independence, I
just said that if a particular area has a custom,
then it should not be disturbed.

All right. What is the problem here?
I agree with just about everything Lazlo said... I have *NEVER* been
to a concert of *any* type at which the national anthem is played.
Not classical, not rock, not anything. I have never even wondered about it.
I do wonder why this is a tradition at the GSAC.

I do not think Sinead was out of line, and I certainly don't agree with
DJs and their personal vendetta. But then again, I get sickened when I
go to an Illini football game and the cheerleaders run around with red
white and blues and everybody is so bloody American. People tend to over
do it, but what can you say about the most ethnocentric country in the
world?

Oh, I just remembered a concert at which the star spangled banner was
played. It was a big one, too.

I probably know better than to jump in to this debate, but since no one

Greg Larkin says (in reply to Lazlo Nibble)

> just said that if a particular area has a custom,

IMHO, one of the most important aspects of modern popular music is that
it _does_ disturb customs, be they local, national, or global. Greg
quotes Midnight Oil in his signature: a good example of a group that
deliberately attempts to disturb its audience into paying attention to
political and environmental issues. Her KaTeness has built a career on
upsetting peoples ideas of pop music -- novices reactions to my playing,
say, _Get Out of My House_ tend to be shock, horror and even revulsion
(until they achieve enlightment, that is, and I untie them). Anyone who
thinks KT's music doesn't have political significance turn on the radio and
listen to the type of music women are _supposed_ to make. If Sinead has
started some arguments in New Jersey, and maybe made some people think,
then she has helped to keep popular music an important part of our (I mean
the world's) culture.

I am also reminded that the melody of the Star Spangled Banner came from
a popular song circa 1812, and frankly, the a cappella folk songs Sinead
is singing this tour ar far more moving. Though given the number of
goofball fans standing on their seats at Sinead's Great Woods concert,
"O say can you see" is a very appropriate sentiment... 8-]

Vickie, good to hear that you are back on the air. Just wish I could pick
up a broadcast here in Boston... Also, thanks to those who recommended
Hetch Hetchy -- I got _Swollen_, Bossanova (Pixies), and Graffiti Bridge
(his purpleness) yesterday, and listened to them here at work today. !!
( NOTE: Bossanova is maybe not quite as good as Doolittle, but definately
recommended, and Graffiti Bridge is great, but then I'm a sucker for Prince.)

PLEASE, y'all, keep recommending musicians and albums; seems like I've
bought everything by my favorite artists, and I live on new music...
(OK, OK, I'm sending off for Happy's tapes!)

Footah! <- Note this is a cheerful exclaimation (from the Love and Rockets
comic book), _not_ a name.

I think that Sinead's and Lazlo's point (also my belief) is that such
Nationalism (especially outrage over refusing National anthems or
[much stronger] flag burning) leads you well down the road to a
'superiority complex' over other nations.

Now, you should realise her decision was based on a disgust/distaste
for nationalism/patriotism, not America as most of the enraged people
around this issue seem to think.

I'm sure love hounds are sick of this by now, so, flames by email.

I have to agree with Greg. People getting bent out of shape, just because an
peoson does not want to have another countries national anthem played, is a
kind of bigotry we can all do without.

didn't find much of anything in new york...looked at _temple of truth_
again, but couldn't justify the $20 they were asking for songs i have
live elsewhere. i did buy a 7" interview set. one disc is a pic disc
bearing the same photo as that cd interview disc is posted about earlier
in the summer and the other disc is white/gray with a purple label.
no information about the interview is given, but i believe it has
laready been transcribed by fingers more industrious than these...

the white vinyl is labeled:

glad to hear that vickie may again be on the airwaves...i'm still settling
here, but maybe in the fall, i'll be on wfmu in east orange (i hope).

Subject: Sinead and The National Anthem
Status: OR

Everyone hear about the fracas going on because Sinead said that she would
refuse to perform on Saturday in New Jersey if the national anthem was played
before she went on? Apparently this arena plays the US anthem before every
event. Sinead said she had a problem with performing after the playing of any
national anthem, even that of Ireland.

There is a picture of her on the cover of the New York Post from the 1989
Grammy Awards when she had the PE logo on her *completely* shaved head. Oh,
the site in New Jersey has permanently banned her from performing there. She
is also in USA TODAY with a little blurb on the issue. bi4now;

If she's looking for a boyfriend, who's the guy she was with at the Video
Awards? (And if she's broken up with Hugh, that may be why she seemed
depressed.) Wonder how her pregnancy is progressing; perhaps that's why
she wore the bleached-Hare-Krishna costume at the awards...

I saw a newsclip on the CBS morning news the other day.--
it showed Sinead hanging around a crowd that was protesting
her concert because of the anthem thing. She was incognito,
sporting a wig of bob-length brown hair.

My god, she looked stunning with dark hair framing those
eyes and cheekbones. Even Victoria Corderi (the news anchor
afterwards) said, "Wow, she looks great with hair."

Hi,

The great deal of press that SOC has been getting lately obviously led RS to
dedicate a whole page to her, with a mini-interview, supposed to clarify
all controversial matters.

According to this interview:

- She is not pregnant.
- She has broken up with Hugh Harris.
- She is separated from her husband on friendly terms (Note: She thanked him
  at the MTV awards show).
- She is fed up with all the publicity she's been getting.

among other things that I don't remember right now.

Are there any chart-devotees among the members of this mailing list who could
tell me what was the highest chart position that TENC reached?
(out of curiosity)

Are there plans for the release of any other single from IDNWWIHNG?

BTW, I heard a remix of "I am stretched.." on the radio the other day that
blew me away... It had samples of "I want your hands on me" in it!

That's all for now.

I was wondering what ws going on because she definitely did not look pregnant on
the Ameican Music Awards.

Who was the father? Is she still married to the father of her son, Jake? Who
is Hugh Harris. Perhaps someone can clear up Sinead's marital history for me.
Especially someone from Ireland! I had no idea they were on the NET. That is
*so* cool! The answers I want to know are...

Who is the father of Jake O'Connor?
Who has Sinead married in the past? Is she still married?
Who was "The Last Day Of Our Acquaintance" written about?
IS she still pregnant? When is/was she due? Who is the father?
Who is HUgh Harris?
What are the next singles to be released from _IDNWWIHG_?
Does she give credit to Nellee Hooper on "Nothing Compares 2 U"?
Dose she give credit to James brown on "I Am Stretched On YOur Grave"?

That's all for now....

Well I'm not from Ireland but I have the answers to most of your questions,
so here they are:

>Who is the father of Jake O'Connor?
>Who has Sinead married in the past? Is she still married?

John Reynolds, her first and current husband from whom she is now separated.

>Who was "The Last Day Of Our Acquaintance" written about?

I don't have a clue, although judging from the SPIN interview it could be about
some of her friends when she first went to London from Ireland.

>IS she still pregnant? When is/was she due? Who is the father?

According to the new RS interview and a previous posting on jitr she is not.

>Who is HUgh Harris?

He opened for her shows in the first leg of the IDNWWIHNG tour. A "Terence
Trent D'Arby" wannabe. Nothing to get excited about...

>What are the next singles to be released from _IDNWWIHG_?

I asked the same question yesterday... :-)

>Does she give credit to Nellee Hooper on "Nothing Compares 2 U"?
>Dose she give credit to James brown on "I Am Stretched On YOur Grave"?

The album credits don't mention anything as far as I know.

That's all for now.

Well I'm a chart fanatic and as far as I remember The Emperor's new Clothes
stalled at #66, I think. I *know* it didn't get higher than 50. Rather odd
behaviour. Hmmm, does anyone have the CD single of 'TENC'? I bought it for
the remixes of 'IASOYG' [the impor CD.not the domestic single] and was not
very impressed. I'd love to know whehter a remix with ~I Want Your Hands On
Me" mixed in is commercially available.

I think the next single will probably be '3 Babies' since that is what the
record company was advertising when the album first came out [along with
'NC2U' and 'TENC']. My favourite track is 'Feel So Different' with '3 Babies'
and 'The Last Day Of Our Aquaintance' coming in vey close seconds.

Hi -

Sorry, this doesn't have to do with Sinead, but I thought
readers may be interested in ABC as well. Anyway, I just found
while disc shopping today that they have a new disc out called
"Absolutely" (does anybody know what their other 1990 album, "Up",
is like?) which is like a greatest hits. It's good and includes
the great Munich mix of "Be Near Me"; the disc runs over 72 minutes!
Where would be a good place to post this information?

Sorry to bother the whole list with this, but there is some sort of
mailer problem in the Toronto area that is causing JITR messages to
bounce back to the Postmaster address here on presto.ig.com, and none
of the addresses seen in the error messages are directly on the JITR

Therefore, if you are reading this message at (or are performing a

glad you're back, Michael, and it's good to see some JITR action!
(We've been off of the nets for a while, and, frankly, there haven't
been very many postings recently...

So, I'm a little confused: was Sinead pregnant before, and now not, or
was she never pregnant. When I saw here at Great Woods (Boston, more or less)
she looked like she might be late in her first three months or so (she wasn't
wearing much...) Actually, I guess it really isn't our business... whatever.

IMPORTANT!!! OK, come on, _someone_ out there must know about the Karen
Finley/Sinead 'duet' on JITR. I've been trying to find it since WFNX (the
only decent non-college radio station in Boston) announced that they couldn't
play it on the air (*sigh*). After that, I saw Karen Finley at the Harvard
U. theater, and she was pretty cool. People were squirming in their seats:
a good sign. (though only one person walked out when she took her clothes off
and smeared chocolate over herself...) Anyway, the program for that show
also mentioned a JITR duet single, so it MUST be out there, but I can't find
it in Boston. If anyone knows where to find it, please let me know!

Alos, how about a review of the _Stretched on your Grave_ CD single: I'm
kinda suspicious of CD singles, 'cuz of the price and all, but if it's good
then maybe I'll just break down and buy it...

Well, I'm off to read rec.music.gaffa; see ya!

Alas, no, though the bit when she held up a fist-full of alfalfa sprouts and

Apologies to anyone offended, but that's the point after all.

yeah, my friend picked up a copy at one of the smaller record stores here
in Houston (you know, one of those places where vampires hang out). Basically,
it's an extended mix of "Jump.." with Finley contributing some animal noises
and very obsecene imagery in the middle. I thought it was pretty
sensationalistic and basically silly. But, then, that's about what I think of
Finley, knowing the little about her that I do (sprouts?!).

Check the specialty shops - you won't find it at Sound Warehouse, but I'll
bet you can get it in Boston if you look hard enough.

Sinead O'Connor is supposed to be on Saturday Night Live this
weekend, or so I hear. Why the sudden TV blitz I wonder!

Well, the record company probably thought it was time to release another single.
It's been 6 months and only two have been erleased.

The SNL appearance was planned months ago. Most likely ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT
just figured this would be as good a time as any to do stuff on her. She is not
going to be appearing on the ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT piece heself is she? I hope
she does '3 Babies' and 'NC2U' tomorrow on SNL.

Anyone see Sinead last night? It was cool. I still haven't seen '3 Babies'. I
have no idea when it premiered, if it has...

Anyway, Sinead did "Three Babies" first, it was not as good as the recorded
version, which is one of my faves on the album. She was wearing black jeans,
a black lace top and rose tinted lennon glasses, they suited her, I thought.
Her hair has grown back since her last appearance on MTV.

She did "The Last Day Of Our Acquaintance". She was VERY into the performance
and it showed. She started shouting [NOT singing, towards the end. ] She added
a verse or two. It was very intense though, I liked it. The drums were not as
loud as in te recordred version. It was great. Anyway, if anyone sees 3 Babies
let me know.

Out here in the hinterland, we lost most of the beginning of Three Babies
due to some sort of satellite problem. I was bummed. Last Day looked great,
though.

I saw it last night and it was pretty good. I wasn't particularly impressed
with 3 Babies and it looked like lip synching with even the guitar licks
Sinead was strumming seeming "phony" (though I could be wrong; how come
many TV shows have artists just lip synching??). However, Last Day was
good! She sang with real conviction and the performance seemed "real".
