Evening Herald, Dublin, May 2, 1990

ROCK star Sinead O'Connor has become a Buddist, renouncing her
Catholic upbringing. She told the Japanese music magazine "Rocking ON" that she
had rejected Catholicism since becoming a mother and wife.
She had become more understanding and tolerant because of her new
religion, she says.
"I don't like Catholicism and my marriage and the birth of my son
became a turning point - I've learned a lot about myself and my ability to love
others through them," she said.

Greetings...

Well, KaTeFans wouldn't necessarily have a name if she hadn't come out with
"Hounds of Love": Love-Hounds is such an awesome term!!! :)

JITRs shouldn't even be a consideration here- it sounds stupid when applied
to organic objects. How about Troians? Nope- then people will think we
worship Marina Sirtis (from Star Trek-The Next Generation, you know).

Mandinkans? Black Boys on Mopeds? Sineadians? Lions and Cobras?

I think we need to wait until Sinead comes up with a catchy album title that
could apply to humans well...

Some good news for JITR's (and others) in the Boston area:
I heard on WBCN (104.1) that tomorrow (Thursday) night they will be
broadcasting a tape of Sinead's 1988 Boston show. (I think she did
two, one at the Paradise, which I saw, and then another at Axis. They
didn't say which one it is, but I think it is the Paradise show.)

This broadcast will be at 11pm, so most people at the show should be
able to get home to tape it in time. Of course I live way the hell
out in Worcester, so I won't be home in time, but I should be able
to rig up a timer...

(Note: Please don't flame me as a WBCN listener, because I'm usually not,
except for special things like the Lost Lennon Tapes. I just happened on
this announcement as I was going through radio stations in my car and I
stopped on WBCN because they were playing a Sinead song. Why can't
WFNX increase their power so that it can be picked up in Worcester?)

Mandinkans? Black Boys on Mopeds? Sineadians? Lions and Cobras?

I'd hesitated to mention this before because I haven't been able to
look it up, but I am pretty sure that Mandinka is a Bantu language and
the name of an ethnic group in Africa. I think the name for
"Mandinkans" is really "Mandinka". So that name might not be the
best.

And while I am being a linguist--is "Buddhist" spelled "Buddist" in
Ireland and the British Isles??

I saw Sinead at the Fabulous Fox Theatre on Tuesday night.
What a fantastic show! Quickly, she sang every song off of
her two albums, EXCEPT:

Just Like U Said It Would B
  Never Gets(?) Old
  Drink Before the War
  Just Call Me Joe
I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got

(Sorry if some of the titles aren't correct; I don't have my
CD's with me.) I really missed "Just Like U Said It Would B"
and "Drink Before the War;" I even heard girls outside of the
Fox after the show singing, "I will learn how to run with the
big boys," so I guess I wasn't alone.

She opened with "Feel So Different," and encored with "Troy"
(Yes!!!). She played over half of her songs on acoustic
guitar alone (even "Troy"), and featured a full band on the
others. A projector would show different pictures (the statues
in the "Nothing Compares 2 U" video) during the concert, or
else shadows of Sinead and her band would flash behind her.
For "Stretched on Your Grave," she brought out a huge tape
player for accompaniment. At the end of the song, she danced
a jig.

Sinead's voice was magnificent, going from low ("You're all
wrong, I said") to high ("Jackie-O") with seemingly little
effort. Unfortunately, her microphone cut out on her high
notes four or five times during the show, usually for only
a couple of seconds. Sinead seemed pleased when, during a
mic failure in "Jackie-O," the audience picked up the song.
But, after the third failure-during JITR-she turned her back
to the audience and looked to the band. The drummer (her
husband?) nodded at her and smiled, and she turned back to
finish the song.

It was a beautiful show, and Sinead spoke to the audience a
few times-"If you'd like to leave your seats and stand, please
do. That would make me much more comfortable." And, when she
returned for "Troy" to a standing ovation, she smiled brightly
and appeared to be truly flattered, almost embarrassed.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention a couple of things about the concert:

  1) Instead of repeating "You're still a liar" at the end of "Troy",
she SPOKE, angrily, "You're still a fucking liar," just once.

  2) The concert T-shirts really sucked, IMHO. A white shirt with "I
do not want what I haven't got." scrawled in Sinead's handwriting
on an irregular arc across the front (in small letters, a bronze
or dirty gold color) and a small blue bird (dove I think, more like
an ink blotch, solid) on the back. There were also black sweatshirts
featuring the same design. Twenty dollars for the T-shirts, thirty
for the sweats. The price, though steep, was not the issue. I really
wanted to get a concert shirt, but couldn't bring myself to paying
for something I could have made myself with a Hanes and a couple of
permanent markers. No pictures, names, cities, or dates on the
shirt-nothing to distinguish it as a "concert tour T-shirt."

Actually this is a point of contention. Many Irish people, myself
included, prefer the term "Great Britain and Ireland" or something
similar to describe the two islands.

[is Buddhism spelt Buddism?] No, it isn't. We may be backward

Words that are transliterated from a language that uses a different
alphabet (Sanskrit in this case) often have variant spelling. I would
say that this was a valid question for an American to ask, considering
how much standard British spelling differs from standard American.

what was said was accurate.

To me the highlights of the show were 'The last day of our acquaintance',
where she sang a verse that is not on the album in the part of the song
where the whole band kicks in and most definitely 'I am stretched on your
grave'. Her dance at the fiddle part was just amazing. But I think that
"Jackie" sounded better in her last tour when she used an electric guitar.
Most of the tension and anxiety in this song was lost by the soft sound of the
acoustic version.

"Nothing compares 2 U" was done very well, "Black Boys on Mopeds" was the
song that shut up some people who had to scream after every line Sinead sang
managing to drown out the next line of the song. The audience was absolutely
quiet during this one, and gave it the warmest applause of the night.

Some details:
------------
i) She sang 'did it so hard' on JITR.
ii) She wore a hooded gypsy-like bright red dress and after "Feel so different"
took off the hood, to wild applause.
iii) She was barefoot.
iv) She didn't introduce the band.

CONCLUSION:

Great show! I would have appreciated hearing 'Just like U said it would B'...
GO! Even if you don't have tix. It's worth the effort.

PS. Sinead will be appearing on the May 12 show of Saturday Night Live,
according to some neon green stickers that were distributed before the show.
So tune in then...

PS2. For Boston fans...In the WBCN broadcast (I taped it this time), she
played a song that isn't anywhere...Is it the Smiths' "the hand that rocks the
craddle" or some other song with a similar title?

Well, that had damn-all to do with Sinead O'Connor...

... out of curiosity, are the running orders on the American and
British releases of The Lion And The Cobra the same? The
impression I get from odd references is that they are, but someone
posted a lyric set a while back that was in the "wrong" order (for

The UK running order is Jackie, Mandinka, Jerusalem, Just Like...,

I Didn't notice that in the Atlanta show. By the way, was the Atlanta show
the first date on the U.S. Tour?

: ii) She wore a hooded gypsy-like bright red dress and after "Feel so
: different" took off the hood, to wild applause.

Sounds like the same dress.

: iii) She was barefoot.
: iv) She didn't introduce the band.

Again, the same was true in Atlanta.

Some other questions, and observations:

1) Some guy named Hugh Harris opened for her. Sort of a funk/reggae/Lenny
   Kravitz type music.

2) Rap music was played before the opening act took stage, and between acts.

3) At one point, Sinead began playing the acoustic guitar, and went into
"The Last Day of Our Acquaintance." Sinead walked in a circle while
playing. But then the band kicked in and they played "I Want Your
(Hands on Me)" instead. She later played "The Last Day..." and began
with the same circle walk. Does she/the band do this in other shows,
   or was it a mistake?

4) She alternated her music so that she used the acoustic in about every
other song. So after almost every song, she would quickly run to the side
stage and grab or return her guitar. Couldn't she have someone bring
the guitar out to her, or have had a guitar stand a little closer to the
   stage front?

5) When is she coming back??!!!

I am highly amused that you pinpoint Ireland in the British Isles. I
will forward your mail to my Irish spouse, who becomes most irate when
anyone claims that Ireland is in the British Isles. I've stopped
arguing with him on it, but will tell him that the Fluffy Yog disagrees.
Is there any other real live Irish person on the mailing list who will
confirm that the Irish disclaim the (sorta obvious to me) fact that
the British Isles do contain Ireland? I guess it's all political.

And now for more on Mandinka. I finally was able to run a search of a
large database (ERIC) for the term, and found that my memory was correect--
Mandinka is an African language and cultural group. It is spoken by
many many people in West Africe--for example, Senegal and Ghana. It is
the same as "Mandingo", with minor sound change. It's the group that
Kunta Kinte in "Roots" belonged to.

Linguists (like me) say that the major language family is "Mandekan" and
its dialects are Bambara, Dyula, and Mandinka-Mandinka.

Most people in the region where Mandinka is spoken also speak French.

I hope this solves the controversy. If we called ourselves Mandinkans,
then, people from West African would be trying to talk to us, and we'd
probably be confused.

Sue Ann made a slight slip and referred to "Ireland and the British
Isles". Mr/Ms Yog noticed the mistake and pointed out that "Ireland is
part of the British Isles". Both Sue Ann and myself pounced on this
assertion and The Yog's subsequent reply showed that what he/she really
meant to say was "Ireland is part of the *so-called* British Isles" --
which is true.

Clear? Ah well, it's a good thing we're all friends here.

Sinead? Oh yea. She's cool.

This isn't a particularly informative subject (neither is mine), since
many cities have places called "Orpheum" -- you went to the one in
Boston, and I've been to the ones in Minneapolis (where I saw Edie
Brickell), in Omaha (for a ballet), and there's probably one here in
Seattle too.

> ...Although I didn't have tickets

Gee, when I saw her in Minneapolis, at Seventh Avenue, I was able to
get tickets at a record store in Saint Paul for face price ($7.50) the
night before the show. Thanks to someone in Love-Hounds who posted a
concert schedule that reached me the night before the show

> There was a description of her concert in Atlanta, and I believe that

That was very different from the show I saw in Minneapolis, which
makes sense, since I saw her there on her last tour. I posted a
review of it to Love-Hounds way back then, which I'll post if I can
find a copy of it.

> i) She sang 'did it so hard' on JITR.

Back then, she said "fucked so hard" on JITR. It appears she has
toned down that line permanantly, for the sake of prudish American
audiences.

> ii) She wore a hooded gypsy-like bright red dress and after "Feel so

Back then, she wore simple jeans and I think a plain t-shirt. She was
stick thin.

She did introduce her band way back when.

She played "The Hand that Rocks the Cradle" on her last tour, her only
cover. At least one of her band members when I saw her had been one
of the Smiths.

Geographically they're the British Isles, but politically they're
separate. Since most people are more politically than geographically
aware, naming them separately is probably a better idea.

> Buddhism is, I'm pretty sure, a fairly standard spelling but

Since English is the most commonly known language (it's a second
language for almost everyone) in India, where there are a lot of
Buddhists, there should be a standard spelling. A dictionary I looked
at approved of "Buddhism". How did that topic come up on this list?

The order you listed for the U.K. release is the same as on my U.S.
copy. You mention a different cover. What is the U.K. cover like?

I read the Spin interview the other day and it mentioned a few songs where she
participated that I haven't heard, like:

** Some stuff by In Tua Nua, an irish band.
** "Heroine" by Sinead and The Edge.

Does anybody know what they are like? Is it worth it to try and find them?

In case you didn't know she has also done two other songs that don't appear
in her albums:

1) Someday my prince will come- From "Stay Awake".
2) Kingdom of Rain- Duet with Matt Johnson of The The, from "Mind Bomb".

Kingdom of Rain must be one of the most beautiful songs of 1989!!

And one more quick question. I read somewhere about the film "Hush a bye baby"
where she plays a catholic nun. The article mentioned that she had written the
soundtrack for the movie. Does anybody know if this is true and if it has been
released anywhere???

Bye for now,

Angelos

I definitely recommend tracking down anything by In Tua Nua. The only
american releases I know of are a Irish-aid album that also had songs by the
Pogues, Van Morrison, Boomtown Rats, etc (I've forgotten its name -- for that
matter, I've forgotten exactly what cause it was aiding) ANYWAY, ITN had one
song on that; their American 'debut' album is called _The Long Acre_ and is
very good (maybe a little slick for my tastes). I'm at work, so I can't check,
but I'm pretty certain that Sinead is NOT on that album -- if anyone else
knows more (like, what other Irish releases ITN has, and if Ms. O'Connor
appears on any of those), let us know!!

The Sinead/Edge collaboration is from the soundtrack to the movie "Captive".
Sadly, Sinead only appears on the one song, and to be honest its not any
overwhelming performance. The rest of the album features instrumental music
by the Edge and Michael Brooks (a Brian Eno collaborator) -- I paid about
$5 for my copy, I wouldn't pay much more.

Footah!

Actually, "Captive" is one of my more favorite albums for playing
while relaxing and/or setting up an ambience. Lots of quiet atmosphere,
some Will-Ackerman-esque guitar work, and quite listenable. (As opposed to the
ambient music you're not supposed to hear.)

The movie is a *real* dog, though. I found it under "Drama" at my local
video store, but based on the acting I suggested they move it to "Comedy".
Plus, they sped up all the music.

I picked up the May Pulse magazine at Tower Records this weekend
and it has a good article on Sinead. Some interesting little tidbits
that I didn't know about are a movie called Husha-A-Bye Baby for
which she did all the music and out of which comes "Three Babies".
Also, she's real tired of the Press! More later, my power's going
off any second....

They've done two albums: "Vaudeville", which is excellent,
and "The Long Acre", which I haven't bothered to hear because
the bits I have heard didn't appeal. If you can find "Vaudeville"
in the U.S., it's worth checking out, especially "Valuable
Lessons", "Love" and "No Solution". And no, Sinead O'Connor
doesn't appear on it either.

Another non-album Sinead song is, ahem, "Stick Your Tongue In
My Hole", which can be found on some bootlegs. Don't ask me,
I just work here.

I think "Vaudeville" is on Virgin Records over here, further info
on request.

Well, it seems some people just never learn their lesson. SNL producers
have allowed Andrew Dice Clay to be the guest host on this weekend's show.
Due to his less-than-honorable routine on MTV last year (and his subsequent
ban from that particular network) in which he (on a live show) went into a
vulgar un-humorous routine, there will be a 7 second delay in the broadcast
of the show to try to prevent a reoccurance of the MTV debacle.

In protest, Sinead canceled her scheduled performance stating roughly
that "she cannot sing a song about women after his (Clay's) performance."
BTW all this obtained from a 30 second clip on the local evening news.

Perhaps she should fly to St.Louis and do a concert here instead. Just a
thought. 8-)

Clay has to be the biggest bigot in the public eye today. I don't know
what he said or did on any shows, because I avoid him like the plague
after hearing part of his album from a "friend." It's not that he's a
disgusting, wormy sort of guy - that we could get used to. It's the cheap,
stolen jokes, especially the ones about "niggers" and "blowjobs from
bitches" that really give people the idea that... maybe he isn't too
level-headed of a fellow. Avoid him like the plague; he is.

I also heard something about her dislike of him because he promotes
homophobia. Good for her for cancelling!

People should also know that regular Nora Dunn was the first to refuse
to do the show because Clay was hosting. That was in the news Tuesday
night, after they started rehersals on Monday.

Dean is right, the place is First Avenue. Seventh is the cross
street. They even have another club, attached to the main club,
called Seventh Street Entry, there to confuse me. Oops.

I looked around for Prince there, since he's reputed to be there quite
often and is pretty famous in Minneapolis, but I didn't see him there.
(I even looked around a little, until Sinead came on, drawing my
attention from all else.) I'd be surprised if he wasn't at the show
though, because she respects him enough to cover (and improve) one of
his songs. A friendly reception, including attending her show, would
be something that could partly explain her respect for him. Does
anyone have an alternative explanation for why she might have covered
Prince?

I don't know the actual title of this gem, but she did sing a song
including those lyrics in Minnesota during her last tour. Doug Alan
or Jon Drukman mentioned the same song in a review of that tour's
Boston show, so it wasn't unique to the Minnesota show. Assuming it
was taped at a show, does anyone know when and where it was taped?
(Or what other origin it might have had?)

Sinead performed at the Beacon Theatre in New York last night.
(And we were there!! :)

The Beacon Theatre is quite a nice place to see a show. It looks like
the lower balcony seats are by far the best in the house, though
because it is a relatively small theatre, any seat at all is not bad.
We speak from absolute experience because our seats were in the very
second to last row in the upper balcony and they were somewhat over to
the right. The view was quite good though - we could see everything,
the angle wasn't bad, and we weren't _that_ far away. (not like
seeing someone at Giant Stadium at all)

I didn't quite catch the name of the opening band. I assume it is the
(I can't seem to find the articles that were sent documenting
other recent shows. I thought I had saved at least one, could
someone please mail one to me, if anyone has it? I'd very much
      appreciate it.)
the same band that has been opening for her so far on this tour. They
didn't have the sound mixed very well, so the drums were a bit too
loud and the vocals weren't nearly loud enough, so we couldn't under-
stand a word that was said or sung. However, they could have been worse.
In particular, I thought their second to last song was rather good.

There was over 30 minutes between the opening band and Sinead's
performace. We were getting restless. But finally the curtain opened:
Sinead was in front center of course, the band was set back, as in the
other shows. Drums in the center, a keyboardist on either side, and a
guitarist in front of each keyboardist.

She was wearing black pants, a black bikers jacket, and a black cap.
As in the other shows that have been mentioned here, she started with
"Feel So Different" She stood relatively still but used a lot of hand
movement. Someone had mentioned that they thought she was directing
the sound people. That's _possible_, but I tried to watch carefully, I
tihnk she has a basic instinct to direct the band, and she is half
doing that and half just doing something expressive with her hands.
Also, she didn't do it throughout the entire show, as someone said
about another show.

The lighting was very pretty - there was a huge screen hung behind the
band, and three tall thin screens hung on either side. The colors and
patterns and movement of the lights always complemented the music well.

In the middle of "Feel So Different", she threw the black cap to the
ground, exposing her head. She looked quite wonderful, I wish we could
have been closer.

Before the next song, she went offstage to get her guitar, and took
off the leather jacket. She was wearing a white and black bustier with
tiny straps. She did "The Emporer's New Clothes" and jumped around the
stage quite a bit during this one.

Then she did "I Want Your Hands On Me". She ran her hands up and down
and all over her body quite a bit - it was quite sensual.

Fourth was "You Cause As Much Sorrow".
Fifth: "Three Babies"
Sixth: "Black Boys on Mopeds"

I liked all three of those better live than I had from the album. I think
they were a little stronger live.

Then she did "Jackie". Only her and her acoustic guitar, unlike the
album, and it was quite good.

Eighth she did "Stretched on Your Grave". She had this one on tape,
like at the other concerts. It was strange at first, but since the
band was not ever the focus of attention anyway, and Sinead was
obviously very comfortable with the tape, it quickly became comfortable
for me too, and she performed it wonderfully.

Ninth was "The Last Day of Our Aquaintance"

Tenth: "Nothing Compares 2 U"

Eleventh: "Jump in the River" She had pictures on the screen behind
her during this one, but there is a rack of lights above the stage,
and (this was the only problem caused by our location) it was very
hard to tell what they were of. She sang "did it so hard".

Twelvth was "Jerusalem" and this was very impressive. So much energy
and very powerful. There was at least one picture with this song.

Thirteenth and last was "Mandinka". Strong but not as great as
"Jerusalem", I felt.

She did "Troy" for the encore. Wow.

So she did everything from the new album except "I Do Not Want What I
Haven't Got". And from the first album, she did all but "Just Like U
Said it would B", "Never Get Old". "Drink Before the War", and "Just
Call Me Joe". I wish she had done "Just like U Said it would B", in
fact I tihnk she ought to have done that song and one the others as a
second encore. But I'm not complaining, it was definitely an amazing
performance.

Now, if we could just get Kate to tour!!!!!!

I forgot to say, that at the end of Troy, she did not repeat "you're still a

The bootleg that I have with this song on it is from 1988,
and is of the Pink Pop Festival in Utrecht, Holland. (At least
I think it's Holland - hey, I'm British, I have a tradition of
insularity to keep up :-)) I *think* that's right - trouble
is, that tape has two shows on it and offhand I can't be sure
which it was. Or it might have been on the other tape I have,
which is of a London show (also '88). Sorry - I can't be more
helpful.

I don't know anything about the song, like whether it's hers
or somebody else's or what. I would guess that like "I Am
Stretched On Your Grave" it was one of the earlier post-Lion&Cobra
songs to come out.

Has anybody seen the video which came out I think last year -
the live show that included four or five L&C tracks plus one
other which might have been I Am Stretched..., I can't remember?
I saw a fairly uncomplimentary review in Q magazine, but haven't
seen the video myself - I'm not even sure if it's still available.

Is there to be a follow-up single to Nothing Compares...?
I haven't heard anything about one, but that doesn't prove much
(you don't hear much about *anything* bar Manchester bands from
the British music papers nowadays...).

Hi,

Just for the record, Mr Clay referred to Sinead, as "that cute bald chick",
on yesterday's show.

No wonder she didn't appear, although maybe it would have been better if she
DID appear, and made a statement before she sang (In my opinion).

Subject: Concert Report: Toronto 15 May 1990
Status: OR

Hi. I just subscribed to this mailing list and am about to break one of
the cardinal rules of netiquette by posting before waiting the customary
month to observe the nature and tone of the list, but I went to see Sinead
O'Connor in concert last night, and I'd like to get a brief review down
while my ears are still ringing.

The concert was at Massey Hall here in Toronto (... Ontario, Canada), an
aging 96 year old concert hall with a seating capacity of about 2750 in
the heart of the downtown. She was here for one performance only, and
lining up a month ago at 6:30 on a cold winter morning for tickets that
went on sale at 10:00 was good enough to get me and two friends floor-level
seats that were waaay off to the left, with a view of the stage that
included a tower of speakers and not much else. Then again, the people
who had slept in until 6:45 were out of luck when the tickets sold out
at 10:40.

What I'm trying to say is that the 2750 people at Massey Hall last night
were Sinead O'Connor's 2750 most dedicated fans in Southern Ontario, and
it showed. The curtains opened and everyone in the front few rows made
a dash for the stage, and after a few futile minutes the vastly outnumbered
security people politely edged their way out of the crowd.

Sinead was standing there at centre stage, dressed all in white, a hooded
white jacket over a white bodysuit, bare feet, and was embarrassed beyond
words at the cheering that wouldn't stop for minutes. She bashfully
covered her mouth with her hand, said "Thank you very much," then turned
around to her band and mouthed "I don't know what to say!"

Finally she opened the concert with "Feel So Different" above the crowds
cheers, and then continued with "The Emperor's New Clothes", and (I don't
have a copy of "The Lion and The Cobra" at work, so I'm not sure of the
titles of the songs from that album) "(I want your) Hands on Me", which
drove the audience into a complete frenzy.

The only bad thing about seeing her in concert is that I just can't bring
myself to listen to her albums -- they're great but she is just so much
better live that it almost spoils her recorded work.

She continued with "Three Babies", but with an additional verse at the
end that I hadn't heard before: "Oh it's lonely/Yes it's lonely/Oh it's
lonely" repeated once. Then came "Black Boys on Mopeds" (can someone
tell me what "madame george and roses" refers to?) and "Jackie" and
"I Am Stretched on Your Grave".

At this point the mob was completely hysterical and wouldn't stop cheering
to let her continue. She waited for a few minutes, said "Thank you very
much", then a few minutes later "I don't know what to say..." and then
"This is a special song for all the women here" to introduce "The Last
Day of Our Acquaintance", which she sang with several extra lines in the
middle that I'm afraid I was too enraptured to remember. By the way, I
don't mean to sound too Fannish by reporting every phrase she said between
songs -- it's just that she was so shy on stage that even if I write every
phrase she spoke, it won't add up to a paragraph.

The keyboardist started the opening chord to "Nothing Compares 2 U" and
then had to hold it for a few minutes until it could be heard again.
They followed it up with three of her louder songs, "Jump in the River"
(whee), "Jerusalem" and "Mandinka" before leaving the stage.

After, you guessed it, another few minutes of deafening applause from
the crowd, she came back on stage by herself and sang "Troy" for
us, ending it with a shouted "You're still a f**king liar!" that
still rings in my ears.

Then the house lights came up and we all stood dazed before wandering
out into the street. I really do like her albums, but they sound so
sedate and carefully produced next to the raw emotion of her live
appearances. Sigh...

Does anyone have a copy of her current tour schedule? I know her
only other Canadian appearance is supposed to be on 7 June in Vancouver,
but I'd be interested to hear of other dates, especially those in
Europe if any.

Hi,

I was wondering if "the Emperor's New Clothes" has been officially released
as a single. If it has been, does anybody know what the flipside is,
if it is the album mix, or any other interesting stuff like the cover etc?
How is it charting? (as if it makes any difference...)

Has a video clip for it been made? Has it been shown on MTV? What's it like?

Sorry for the barrage of questions, but I'm just curious.

Any info will be appreciated.

Sinead played at Michigan State May 16. Unfortunately the crowd was there
to worship rather than listen, and the soft songs were frequently punctuated
with audience whoops. At one point, someone in the crowd loudly yelled
"Why don't you shut up and listen?" Except for the crowd noises, the show
went as others have described, at least up until the encore. She came out
carrying her guitar and at least three guys jumped on stage and rushed her.
(It was a little difficult distinguishing between the rushers and the security
people who came to her rescue.) As one fan approached her, she shook her
finger in his face, which dissauded him from coming any closer. She told
the crowd "As a human being that really freaks me out." She then took off
her guitar, asked the crowd for silence, and sang an acepella version of
"I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got".

I fear the crowd noises will only get worse as record sales and venue sizes
increase. Her music works much better with a respectful audience.

According to the Boston Phoenix Sinead will be playing at Great Woods
on August 14,15.

Tix for the second show go on sale this Saturday.

The opening act this time will be World Party. According to Rolling Stone
their new album 'Goodbye Jumbo' is excellent, and features vocals by Sinead.
I saw their gig last night on Letterman, and their song "Way down now"
kind of reminds me of "Sympathy for the Devil" near the end (the ooh-ooh part).
Can someone review this album, and give more info about Sinead's contribution?
Thanks,

Sinead O'Connor is playing in Seattle on 6 June. Unfortunately, the show
is being promoted by an icky station I don't normally listen to. I didn't
know about the show until I called the station that I would have expected
to do her show (98.9), and they told me about the other station promoting
it. I called them and got the date. But by that time tickets were all

Any Seattle folks want to go anyway and see if we can get tickets from
scalpers? Hard to say what they'll be charging...

This posting will hopefully be of interest, principally
coz it involves a new Sinead song ! As you all know,
people are constantly trying to raise other persons'
awareness of AIDS and are constantly stressing that
safety is everything. Anyway, as recording artists have
such great sway over their (mainly) young audiences, the
medium of music is a great way of spreading the gospel.

A new album will be released soon (not sure when, but it's
been recorded already) with different stars' interpretations
of Cole Porter songs, and as you've probably guessed already
Sinead's doing a song backed by orchestra. Saw it on TV last
night, and it sounded good (she looked good too in a bright
green hooded dress). Other artists on the concept include
the Thompson Twins and Aztec Camera (possibly Bono too, but
I'm not sure of that), so look out for this. I assume all
royalties will go to AIDS foundations like the Terrence
Higgins Trust here in the UK.

Andy.

What could have made her peaceful with a mind

So, is the new cover of "Nothing Compares 2 U" getting much airplay in
places other than the Bay Area? It's by an Italian band variously
referred to as "MXM" or "Maximum" (I haven't seen the record itself
anywhere). It features a singer who sounds a little like Sinead on
diet pills (or maybe helium) and a synthetic backing beat complete
with piano riffs. Live 105 (KITS-FM, San Francisco) has been playing
it a couple times daily for the last few weeks, and for the first few
times it was good for a double-take until you realized that it wasn't
Sinead. (At first I thought it might have been the original version
by Prince's "Family" band.)

Sinead is playing in Denver twice this summer: once on June 11 at the Paramount
(sold out long ago... my sister got scalped tickets, for about $25, though
she doesn't know how much they originally cost.... I still need one, if anyone
out there has one.) and again at Red Rocks, though the date is unannounced.
What are the tickets going for?

Whoa!! I thought the "Nothing Compares 2 U" was originally sung by (get this)
Frank Sinatra!! At least that's what a local radio station said the other day
when they played Frankie's version immediately after Sinead's version.
Apparently, the song has been around quite a while. It just didn't become
popular until now. A few of the words were changed for Sinead's version
that essentially bring the song "up to date," but for the most part, it's
the same song Frankie did, just recycled. (bet that surprised a bunch of you)

Someone posted a bit of misinformation that "Nothing Compares 2U" was
originally sung by Frank Sinatra. I've heard the "Sinatra" version on
the radio, too -- but it's a *gag*! A Sinatra impersonator doing the
song with all the cliched style of Sinatra. It's not real!

Besides, a glance at the lyrics clearly shows that the song was written by
Prince. Somehow I don't think Prince is old enough to have been writing
classic songs for Frank Sinatra.

I sent this to ee8kh@gdt.bath.ac.uk but just so you have it for you records.

This is the original posting I sent out about 6 weeks ago. Brant
tells me he's got about 50 people on his list (about 25 from the
net). I don't know when he'll send out the first issue but I'll
ask him this weekend.

I am posting this for a friend of mine who can't post to the net
but can get mail, although if you can't send him mail (either
electronic or paper) you can send mail to me and I'll see that he
gets it:

Brant Nelson 4 March 1990
1800 Prosser Ave. #5
Los Angeles, Ca 90025

     Dear 4.A.D Fans,

As many of you already know from my ads in Goldmine, I am
starting a fan club for the 4.A.D label in general and the
Cocteau Twins in particular. This letter is to let you know a
little bit more about what I plan to do. First a little bit
about me: I'm a graduate student in astrophysics at UCLA and
I've just finished classwork meaning that I have somewhat more
free time to devote to non-academic things. I've been rather
heavily into record collecting for a while and eventually came
across the 4.A.D label through their best band (in my opinion
anyway) the Cocteau Twins. The idea of a fan club is long
overdue; I know of none for either Cocteau Twins or 4.A.D.
One day a few months ago I came up with the idea of forming
one. I figure the main functions of the club should be to form a
group of friends who share a common interest, to keep everyone up
to date with the latest 4.A.D news, to share opinions and
materials relating to 4.A.D and the Cocteau Twins, and just to
have fun! My plan is to put out a fanzine quarterly (maybe more
often) that will feature letters, reviews, articles, news,
discographies, and artwork. So right now I'm calling for
submissions - letters with ideas for the club, reviews of your
favourite record, stories about when you got to see the Cocteau
Twins perform live (any of you that lucky?!), what you think Liz
Fraser is singing about, want lists, or pretty much anything.
Among other things, the first issue(s) will include a survey,
4.A.D discography and checklist, Cocteau Twins discography
(larger than you might think!), some rare 4.A.D items I found
extra copies of that I'm selling, a couple of wantlists, and a
review of a wonderful new Vaughan Oliver (v.23) art exhibition
booklet. Perhaps most importantly - what's in this newsletter
depends to a large extent on what you submit. What would you
most like to see (besides Liz, Robin, and Simon performing in
your hometown)?
Issue One of Dewdrops will be out by May or June. The cost
per issue I haven't worked out yet, but it will be around $1 to
cover copying and postage. This letter is the first mailing en
masse concerning the fan club and there will be one more progress
report before the first issues are mailed, probably sometime in
April to give you an update. I may correspond with some of you
individually before then. I am going to write to Ivo
Watts-Russel (4.A.D founder) and Capitol Records soon to let them
know about the club, and to see if there's any recent
4.A.D/Cocteau news.
Finally, for anyone who has access to a computer account
that can send electronic mail, my address is nelson@uclastro or
nelson@astro.ucla.edu (whichever works).

          Yours truly,

          Brant Nelson

Sinead is appearing on the cover of June 14th's Rolling Stone. I haven't
had time to look at it yet, so I don't know what all is said about her.
I figured that just this bit of news is important enough to post all by

Has anybody read this yet? Any thoughts/comments?

My impression is that Sinead hasn't realized what she's gotten her self into.
Events such as the Austin walkout, point out that she is not used to the
deified status she gets from crowds wherever she performs. I can't even think
how she'll react to arena audiences this summer (she's playing Great Woods in
Massachusetts that as a seating of around 10,000...). Although her voice can
fill the largest stadium, I don't think that her music will sound good in
such a setting. Looking back at her concert at the Orpheum (~3000 seats), I
think there was a noticeable difference in her mood and her performance from
the 1988 concert at the Paradise that I've listened to over and over again.
She was more withdrawn from the crowd.

Judging from her songwriting so far, I am willing to bet that her next album
will be called "I am sick of success".

But as she says "There's millions of people who offer advice and tell me how I
xshould be, but they're twisted and they'll never be any influence on me", so
I don't want to join that club and will stop here.

I will however remember the days when people asked me who was singing, and
when I said "Sinead", they asked "Shin-who?".

Earlier, I reposted an article about Sinead walking out after only
twenty-five minutes in Austin. A friend in Dallas said she left the
stage after only forty-five minutes there. The Dallas show was, I
believe, the night before the Austin show.

In reply to David, asking about the Berkeley show, I don't have a clue
who Hugh Harris is. But to my knowledge everyone who has opened for
Sinead in the U.S. has been a rapper, so I would consider it a safe bet
to say he is a rapper also. Even if you don't like rap, you should be
sure to go early (unless it's a reserved seating show), because it will
be full. I arrived at First Avenue during her last tour an hour or so
before the rapper was scheduled to start, and still only managed to get
standing space near the middle of the place. (Actually, it was a good
spot, pretty close to the soundboard, but the favored front spots were
pretty packed by the time the rappers started.)

Hugh Harris wasn't rap... no, not at all.

In response to the questions asked, Hugh Harris is NOT a rapper. He is a
Terence Trent D'Arby /Lenny Kravitz type of guy. I personally was extremely
bored with his performance. But still it's worth seeing. Who knows maybe
someday he'll be famous too.

I think it's SINEAD O'CONNOR babbling in tongues! :-)
