Does anyone have a UK import of the new album CD?
My local import store has been getting W. German copies made by DADC in
Austria. My TLATC CD is made by Nimbus UK and I want to know whether the new
album has also been mastered and pressed by Nimbus for the UK market. I
personally believe that on the whole Nimbus UK produces the best sounding CDs.
How else would one want to hear Sinead but at her best?

Please post replies or email direct.

Thanks

Derek

Heh heh - I have a UK copy of I Do Not Want... but it's not
an import...

In response to an earlier message about "Black Boys On Mopeds",
the incident described is not one I recall. Since it's one
that would have made a major stir in the British media (and
quite rightly so), and I catch the news fairly regularly, I'm
inclined to doubt the account of police standing by while a
crowd murdered two black motorcyclists. Possibly the news
got garbled or confused, or the incident was one which took
place in some other country (and was therefore deemed unimportant
by our lovely BBC newsmeisters).

So there you have it. :-)

OK, so I forgot that some of us are accessing this *from* "Importland".
I am so conditioned to referring to imports to the US as "imports" because
that is all I buy and have interest in. Apologies.

But, you didn't answer my question!
Is your UK disc mastered by Nimbus, and if not could you tell me by whom?
I will special order it if so or wait impatiently till I return home (yes I'm
a Brit) in May and buy it then. The information would be much appreciated
before then though.

Thanks

I didn't answer the question of who manufactured the CD
because I didn't know offhand (and didn't have it with me
in the computer lab to check :-)). Having gone home and
had a look, it seems to be manufactured by EMI rather than
Nimbus. Sorry. (I can't really comment on sound quality as
I don't tend to listen out for it, but it seemed pretty good
to me.)

Hi,

I found out by accident that SOC is playing the Orpheum in Boston on May3&4.
Unfortunately the shows sold out before I even knew she's playing here and
I didn't have time to get tix. It strikes me that there are no ads about
these shows in the Phoenix. I would have expected some publicity...

Well, for those of you outside Boston, listen to your local radio stations
for info and get ready for a rapid sell-out.

If anyone in Boston has Tix they can spare, please let me know!

DRINK BEFORE THE WAR

well, now you're tellin' us that we're wrong
and you tell us not to sing our song
nothing we can say will make you see
you got a heart of stone
you can never feel

you say, oh I'm not afraid - it can't happen to me
I've lived my life as a good man
no you're out of your mind
it won't happen to me
'cuz I've carried my weight
and I've been a strong man
but listen to the man in the liquor stor
he yelling, anybody wanna drink before the war?

and your parents paid you through
you got a nice big car
nothin' bothers you
somebody cut out your eyes
you refuse to see
somebody cut out your heart you refuse to feel

and you live in a shell
you create your own hell
you live in the past and talk about war
and you dig your own grave
but it's a life you can save
so start gettin' fast
it's not gonna happen
and you'll cry
but you'll never fall no, no, no

you're building a world
gotta break it down
start again

no, no, no - it won't happen to us
we've lived our lives
basically have been good men
so stop talking of war
'cuz you know we're heard it all before
why don't you go out there and do something useful

but listen to the man in the liquor store
he yellin', anybody wanna drink before the war?
anybody wanna drink before the war?
anybody wanna drink before the war?

JACKIE

Jackie left on a cold, dark night
telling me he'd be home
sailed the seas for a hundred years
leaving me all alone

and I've been dead for twenty years
I've been washing the sand with my ghostly tears
searching the shores for my Jackie-oh

I remember the day the young man came
said, your Jackie's gone, got lost in the rain
and I ran to the beach
and laid me down

you're all wrong, I said
and they stared at the sand
that man knows the sea like the back of his hand
he'll be back some time
laughing at you

and I've been waiting all this time
for my man to come, take his hand in mine
and lead me away
to swanset shores

I've been washing the sand with my salty tears
searching the shore these long years
and I'll walk the sea forever more
'til I find my Jackie-oh

JUST LIKE U SAID IT WOULD B

I will walk in the garden
and feel religion within
I will learn how to run with the big boys
I will learn how to sink and to swim

and there's talk in the houses
and people dancing in rings
ah, will you close my eyes, babe?
I can see most everything
I can see most everything

just like u said it would b
just like u said it would b
it's just like u said it would b
it's just like u said it would b

I can see too many miles of them
too many eyes closed, it's closed
not enough minds open
too many legs open
tell me tell me
tell me
tell me, do
why listen to it, why why
I don't see why I listen why why

When I've walked in the garden
when I'm walking off stage
when everything's quiet
will you stay?
will you be my lover?
will you be my mama?
I said will you be my lover?
I said will you be my babe?

When I lay down my head
at the end of my day
nothing
nothing would please me better
than I find that you're there

When I lay down my head
at the end of my day
nothing would
nothing would please me better
than I find that you're there when I wake

just like u said it would b
just like u said it would b
just like u said it would b
just like u said it would b

will you be my lover?
will you be my lover?

just like u said it would b
just like u said it would b
just like u said it would b
just like u said it would b
just like u said it would b

JERUSALEM

came down and the lady said it
got tore down and the priest just said it

five years

Jerusalem
Jerusalem

gettin' tired of you doing this to me
I'm gonna hit you if you say that to me
one more time
I wanna see you and you're sayin' you're busy
wanna stop it and you said it would be easy
sure takes time

probably next time aughta be the last time
oh you don't two-time
it'd be the best time
never meaning next time
short time
hope you're doing what you said
when you swore you'd make it better
live on the letter
on time

Jerusalem

MANDINKA

I'm dancing the seven veils
want you to pick up my scarves
see how the black moon fades
soon I can give you my heart

I don't know no shame
I think I'm playin' a game
see the flame ...

but I do know a Mandinka
I do know a Mandinka
I do know a Mandinka
I do

they're throwing it all this way
dragging it back to the start
and they say, see how the glass is raised?
I have refused to take part
I told them drink something new
please let me pull something through

I don't know no shame
I think I'm playin' a game
I don't know no shame
I think I'm playin' a game
see the flame

but I do know a Mandinka
I do know a Mandinka

I do
I do
I said I do

soon I can give you my heart
I swear I do
soon I can give you my heart

I do
Mandinka
soon I can give you my heart
soon I can give you my heart

NEVER GET OLD

young woman with a drink in her hand
she like to listen to rock and roll
'cuz it never gets old
it's the only thing that never gets old

young man in a quiet place
go hold on his arm
lives in there
never does no harm
it's the only thing that never can do no harm
must be the only thing that never can do no harm

some say that on the avenue
everyone was happy
living life on the cover
being alive
being blind

TROY

I remember it
it happened in a rainstorm
sitting in the long grass in summer
keeping warm
I remember it
every restless night
we were so young then we thought that everything we could possibly do was right
every move stolen from our very eyes
I wonder where you went to
and tell me
when did the light die?
you will rise
you'll return
phoenix from the flame
and we will learn and we will rise
you'll return
being what you are
there is no other Troy
for you to burn
and I never meant to hurt you
I swear I didn't mean those things I said
I never meant to do that to you
next time I'll keep my hands to myself instead
oh, and I should love you
what do you want to do?
does she need you like I do?
do you love her?
is she good for you?
does she hold you like I do?
do you want me?
should I leave?
I know you're always telling me that you love me
but just sometimes I wonder if I should believe
oh, I love you
God, I love you
I'd kill a dragon for you
and die
but I will rise and I will return
the phoenix from the flame
I have learned
I will rise
and you'll see me return
being what I am
there is no other Troy
for me to burn

and you should have left the light on
you should have left the light on
then I wouldn't have tried
you'd never have known
and I wouldn't have pulled you tighter
no, I wouldn't have pulled you close
I wouldn't have screamed
now I can't let you go
if the door wasn't closed
no, I wouldn't have pulled you to me
no, wouldn't have kissed your face
you wouldn't have begged me to hold you if we hadn't been
there in the first place
but I know you wanted me to be there
every look that you threw told me so
but you should have left the light on
you should have left the light on
wouldn't have made it burn away
but you're still spitting fire
make no difference what you say
you're still a liar
you're still a liar
you're still a liar

Sinead is playing the Smith Auditorium of George Washington Univ
on May the 5th. (I was able to acquire tickets a week after these
went on sale.) Here in the NYC area no concerts have been announced.

Hello again,

I just saw the latest issue of TIME and found a feature on Sinead in the Music
section. The article is generally very flattering for Sinead.

I didn't realize that "nothing compares 2 u" was approaching #1 in the US. Also
IDNWWIHG debuted at the top of the charts in some publication (not Bilboard).

It is surprising that the American public has woken up and replaced crap like
Milli Vanilli and Paula Abdul with real valuable musicians like Sinead.
Could this be the start of a new trend in music???
Or is it just because Prince wrote the single??

I'll just have to wait for the Rolling Stone cover feature.

I was reading a homework assignment in a british-lit anthology, and
happened upon the following poem. Sinead's "Troy" is quite obviously
based, at least to some degree, upon this poem. The 'her' in the poem
was Yeats' love interest, Maude Gonne, an Irish reactionary who
consistently turned down Yeats' marriage proposals.

I've included my own transcription of "Troy" following the Yeats poem.

Enjoy!

"No Second Troy"

Why should I blame her that she filled my days
With misery, or that she would of late
Have taught to ignorant men most violent ways,
Or hurled the little streets upon the great,
Had they but courage equal to desire?
What could have made her peaceful with a mind
That nobleness made simple as a fire,
With beauty like at tightened bow, a kind
That is not natural in an age like this,
being high and solitary and most stern?
Why, what could she have done, being what she is?
Was there another Troy for her to burn?

					--William Butler Yeats, 1908

"Troy"

I remember it:
Dublin in a rain storm
Sitting in the long grass in summer
Keeping warm
I remember it:
Every restless night
We were so young then
We thought that everything we could possibly was right
Every move stolen from our very eyes.
And I wondered where you went to
And tell me, when did the light die?
You will rise
You'll return,
A phoenix from the flame
You will learn
You will rise
You'll return
Being what you are
There is no other Troy
For you to burn

And I never meant to hurt you
I SWEAR
I didn't mean those things I said
I never meant to do that to you
Next time I'll keep my hands to myself instead

Oh, does she love you?
What do you want to do?
Does she need you like I do?

Do you love her?
Is she good for you?
Does she hold you like I do?

Do you want me?
Should I leave?
I know you're always telling me that you love me
But just sometimes I wonder if I should believe
Oh, I love you
God, I love you
I'd kill a dragon for you or die

But I will rise
And I will return
The phoenix from the flame

I have learned
I will rise
And you'll see me return
Being what I am
There is no other Troy for me to burn

Well you should have left the light on
You should have left the light on
Then I wouldn't have tried,
You'd never have known

And I wouldn't have pulled you tighter
No, I wouldn't have pulled you close
I wouldn't have screamed,
"No, I can't let you go,"
If the door wasn't closed
No, I wouldn't have pulled you to me
NO, wouldn't have kissed your face
You wouldn't have begged me to hold you
If we hadn't been there in the first place
Oh, but I know you wanted me to be there
Every look that you threw told me so

But you should have left the light on
You should have left the light on
Light on
Light on
Wouldn't have made me turn away
But you're still spitting fire
Makes no difference what you're saying
You're still a liar
You're still a liar
You're still a LIAR

		--Sinead O'Conner

Just caught the video for "Jump In the River" on [U.S.] MTV's 120 Minutes.
MTV mistitled it "Jump Into the River", and did not identify it as
>from the new album (IDNWWIHG), but instead just repeated "Jump Into
the River" on the "album" line of the title. This usually indicates an
EP of some sort; for a real single they usually leave out the third line.
Is there a JITR EP?

It was done some time ago, predating IDNWWIHG (the song, of course,
dates back to the soundtrack of MARRIED TO THE MOB); Sinead is still
hairless. The video is, to my mind, delightfully faithful to the
frazzled, slightly nauseous tone of the song. It consists of a montage
of jump-cut and smash-cut images, mostly motion but a few stills,
Sinead at a desk in an empty room holding her head, Sinead in blue
light, smoking a cigarette, Sinead whirling around, all intercut with
some man (can't identify him) wearing men's underwear, then women's
underwear, including a bra, then a diaper, each of these images
intercut with several Sinead, each lasting perhaps half or
three-quarters of a second.

The song (as you may have gathered) is one of my favourites, as
it may represent that last we'll see/hear of Sinead's "bad girl" period.
("There's been days like this before, y'know/And I liked it all/Like
the time we did it so hard/There was blood on the wall" ... Indeed.)

Needless to say, the video is about as different from "Nothing Compares 2 U"
as one can get, and reminds me a little of the "Mandinka" video (maybe
even a few reused feet of tape in there?).

Anyway, more info on this video would be appreciated...

Sinead will be in the Fabulous Fox on May 1, 1990.
I bought a couple of tickets Monday, and they had
sold about 85% of the 5,000 seats available.

I had been told by this girl that she really wanted
to go to the concert. She talked about it for over
a week. So I drive up to Atlanta to get tickets, and
now she's backing out.

Any cool single chicks in the Atlanta or Auburn, AL area

Subject: MCB's review of I DO NOT WANT WHAT I HAVEN'T GOT
To: jump-in-the-river
Status: OR

I DO NOT WANT WHAT I HAVEN'T GOT will take a bit longer for me to feel
100% comfortable with, in comparison to THE LION AND THE COBRA. I
should point out that THE LION AND THE COBRA is probably the CD that
I've played more than any others in the last 3-odd years, and that it
instantly became, and remained, my favorite album of the 1980's.

So IDNWWIHG has a lot to live up to, but I think it makes the grade,
both musically and thematically. There is nothing here that compares
with the raw power of (say) "Troy" or "Just Like U Said it Would B",
but Sinead trades some of this knife's-edge emotionality for lyrical
and musical complexity.

Before the release of the album, the only songs I'd heard from it were,
of course, "Nothing Compares 2 U", rightly on its way to #1 on the
charts, the previously-released "Jump In the River" from the MARRIED TO
THE MOB soundtrack, and "Black Boys on Mopeds" which Sinead sang on an
"MTV Unplugged" session and also exists, I am told, as an import
cassette single (bootleg?) that was played on radio for a while.

The surprise hit on the album, and the song I keep coming back to, is
the wonderfully eclectic "I Am Stretched on Your Grave". This is an
unusual mix, consisting of a percussion track that seems ripped right
out of New York rap (I kept expecting Public Enemy to break in any
second), Sinead's almost monotonic vocal, a dark Celtic poem, and --
finally -- an Irish fiddle (played by Steve Wickham). The total effect
is stunning; I crank this one up and play it over and over.

Much has been written about "Nothing Compares 2 U", and now that every
radio station in the U.S., from Alternative/College to Top-40, seems to
play it about five times a day, we will undoubtedly see and hear much
more. With luck, this will be Sinead's _entre'_ to the major music
awards and the mass sales awards (gold/platinum records etc.) and the
global recognition that comes with them. Add to this a video that is
brain-fryingly and heart-stoppingly beautiful, right down to the tear
making its way down Sinead's cheek, and you've got a Song of the Year
in the making.

"Feel So Different" is the perfect song to begin the album, as it
introduces the "new" Sinead to an audience made up of previous fans and
a lot of new converts. With a simple melody and accessible lyrics, it
seems to say "This is where I'm at: if you like this, you;ll like what
follows; if this seems different to you, be prepared for some changes."

"Three Babies", "The Emperor's New Clothes", "You Cause As Much
Sorrow", and "The Last Day of Our Acquaintance" are in may ways
similar, and form sort of a thematic core for the whole album.
Sinead's anger is restated, but not muted, and in these songs she shows
that she can express emotional strength and depth with softly-sung
lyrical turns just as well as with the shrieks and screams of THE LION
AND THE COBRA. "The Emperor's New Clothes" is the second U.S. single,
and should be a winner. I don't know if Top-40 radio is ready for
lines like "If I treated you mean/I really didn't mean to/But you know
how it is/And how a pregnancy can change you", but we shall see.

"Jump In the River", as I have written about before (in a previous
message about the video), may represent the last of the "old" Sinead,
and is a delightfully frazzled, dizzy song with a video that matches in
mood and tone. The backing instruments, which Sinead evidently cooked
up herself on a synth -- the percussion at least -- sound otherworldly,
like a bar band on bad acid, cutting in and out of the vocal at weird
times. Underneath all this is a perfectly good Sinead song, where the
lyrics work more on a symbolic/emotional level than a rational one,
like much of THE LION AND THE COBRA and unlike much of the current
album.

I haven't made up my mind about "Black Boys on Mopeds"; it asks to be
dealt with on a political level, and at that political level I don't
know whether I can accept the idea of Mrs. Thatcher credibly compared
with the butchers of Tiananmen Square. I accept and enjoy the song on
its musical and personal level ("And I love my boy & that's why I'm
leaving/I don't want to be aware that there's/Any such thing as
grieving") but (considering that the Sinead's politics and mine and
Mrs. Thatcher's probably describe three vertices of an equilateral
triangle) I wonder whether Sinead understands that her voice and lyrics
are a powerful weapon that must be used carefully.

Which leaves us with "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got". Many singers
record _a capella_ songs from time to time; most of them simply don't
have the range and depth to make up for the starkness of the
presentation. Sinead does, as I think we all appreciate, and this
provides us with a fine finale to the album. (Though I think Sinead
should have dispensed with the slight echo effect here; she doesn't
need it.)

At this point, of course, I'm depressed: will we have to wait three
*more* years for another one????

Angelos wants to know if this group is alive. Hypothesis:
a lot of us are in or around college, where it is end of semester
and we're going nuts. I sure am.

If you're still having any trouble getting into IDWWIHG, try
learning the words and singing it yourself. Better than Buddhism.

I always thought it was a reference to the African tribe 'Mandinga',
which sounds a lot like "mandinka". Sorta fits, since the opening
line is "I'm dancing the Seven Veils": a famous Middle Eastern dance.

Better explanations?

This question isn't stupid, but it is over-asked. But, I haven't seen
any replies, so I guess I'll ask myself.

Does anyone have a list of Sinead's tour dates? If not, then does anyone
know if/when she'll be playing any city in the southwest (texas, colorado,
arizona, california ... I'm not picky). If nobody can answer either of
those, can anyone tell me where I should go to look for such information?
I'm at a loss.

I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to see her sing "Troy" live. I think it would
make a nice end-of-the-semester treat.

I know that some mail was sent saying that "Troy" was somehow influenced by
Keats (or who ever wrote that poem), but my question is, "What does the phrase
'No other Troy for me to burn' mean or refer to?" Is it some reference to
the Greek city of Troy, or is it a word meaning wood or something else that
you burn?

I have a personal interest in this one. Thanks for any comments.

Perhaps one reason why this group is not as "alive" as say the Kate Bush group
is that Sinead has only just released her second album, is only now achieving
substantial success and does not have a slough of books, fan magazines,
bootlegs, rare recordings or interview articles etc. Thus there is not as
much to discuss. Until such material is generated all we have are her songs,
her concerts, the odd interview and the small amount of trivia that makes it
to publication.

And/or, we could all be too busy to generate posts. It's difficult also to
keep up with everything one may want to read on the net groups.

Any comments?

Hi,

OK, this list is not dead! But, I still believe more people should start
posting...

I have some good news for all of you that would like to see Sinead in action.
(No, not free concert tix...I wasn't able to find any for myself...Well, to
be more accurate I missed the concert announcement, and the tickets sold out
in a matter of hours. AND i refused to give 75 dollars for balcony seats to
some scalping agency...)

I just watched New Visions on VH-1, and was surprised to see that SOC was
the featured artist, who PERFORMS LIVE on the show.

She played "The last day of our acquaintance" and "IDNWWIHNG". I am actually
beginning to like the second song, and her voice live is just as good as
her voice on the album.

SO, if you have nothing to do during the weekend, try to catch this show,
or set your VCR to record it. (I did!).

By the way, has she released any videos???
I would love to have a video of any live performance from her first tour.
I remember that WFNX broadcasted her show at the Channel back in 1987,
but having just come to Boston, I only had a walkman and couldn't record it.
I was however surprised by her rendition of "Troy", among others.
I was also studying for a Thermodynamics exam, that;s why I didn't go to that show...

Has anybody on the list seen Sinead live? Would they be willing to tell the
rest of us what her stage routine is like? At this point I can only imagine...

Sinead O'Connor
_I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got_
Chrysalis

When she put her fist through the window of the pop world with her
1987 debut, )The Lion and the Cobra), Sinead O'Conoor seemed like a
post-adolescent driven wild by the looming power of her own voice.
There was rage and impossible sweetness; the wish to be part of the
crowd (you can hear it in O'Connor's love of the dance mix) and the
determination to remain apart. There wasn't any control. _I Do Not
Want What I Haven't Got_ is a kind of explanation of that earlier
outburst -- its tone is cool and impeccably well-crafted, with even
the rawest moments tempered by Sinead's own smooth production.

Many of the songs are literal accounts of the conflicts O'Connor faced
as a new celebrity, the most appealing is "Emperor's New Clothes," in
which our heroine saves the gossip columns the trouble by plainly
stating just how her fame affected her marriage to drummer John
Reynolds (in a nice twist, he plays on the track); also intriguing is
the story of O'Connor's parting with a mentor (lover?), "The Last Day
of Our Acquaintance." On other cuts, O'Connor plays with lyrical
masks: "Three Babies" could be a new take on the ancient Medea story,
or, more likely, could be giving voice to the homeless mother named
two songs later in "Black Boys on Mopeds." "I Am Stretched on Your
Grave" implants hip hop rhythms onto an ancient Irish ballad, told
from a man's point of view; O'Connor blasts through the gender barrier
and makes the obsession behind the story its only point. By mixing
fact with applicable fiction in her songs, O'Connor takes control of
her public image in ways that Janet Jackson could only dream about,
all the while making provocative, political music.

O'Connor's singing remains astounding, although the cathartic
fireworks of her debut effort have been abandoned in favor of a more
finely honed expressiveness. She phrases in the manner of Irish
folksinging, skirting around melodies, letting the songs' meaning form
through her emphasis on certain words. Like Van Morrison, O'Connor
ingests the spirit of current African-American music (for Van, it was
soul, for Sinead, Prince-style rock) to make a startling, extremely
personal sound. She's not a rapper, but O'Connor translates hip hop's
rhythm and narrative impact into her own approach, and in doing so,
she may have discovered the only way to save mainstream rock from
becoming a dinosaur form.

Rock and roll has historically been the product of white males siezing
black cultural influences and mixing them up to suit their own
experience. It's appropriate -- and thrilling -- that as female and
Afrocentric voices grow stronger in the general cultural discourse,
the two most inspiring rock voices belong to Prince, a black man from
Minneapolis, and an Irish-born woman. O'Connor's still on the
upswing, and _I Do Not Want What I HAven't Got_ doesn't prove her
status as a great artist; but it's clear evidence that she's on her
way. I cheer her ascendancy. I'll hold my Zippo up for Sinead
O'Connor anytime.

Are you sure of the date and place? I saw Sinead at the Paradise (much
smaller club than the Channel) in Boston on March 31, 1988, and I think
that was her first tour.

>I was however surprised by her rendition of "Troy", among others.

She did a long acoustic version of "Troy" for the encore at the Paradise.
Was this what you remember?

I didn't know that it would be broadcast, but I did tape it in the club.
Unfortunately, when I flipped the cassette over, it screwed up so I missed
the last song ("I Want Your Hands On Me") and the encore. Does anyone
have a copy of the radio broadcast? I have stuff to trade...

>I was also studying for a Thermodynamics exam, that;s why I didn't go to that show...

Where are you priorities?!?

>Has anybody on the list seen Sinead live? Would they be willing to tell the

There's not really that much to tell. I was about 5 feet away (if you know
the Paradise, I was on the stage side of the center pillar) and could hear
he almost as much directly as through the PA system. She was very good, but
pretty much just stood there and sang. This is fine with me (and often
preferable to those who want to make a "routine"), but not much to discuss.

The audience seemed to include far too many people pushing and shoving to
get near the stage and who were there because she was (and I guess still is)
a rising star. They seemed not to be there for the music. I suspect the
situation will be even worse in larger venues.

It seems that Sinead is skipping Montreal entirely during this
tour. For the Lion and the Cobra tour, she played at the Spectrum,
and I'm pretty sure it was sold out (but it took a few days, rather
than a few minutes, to sell out). The Spectrum is a former cinema
with the seats removed and replaced with chairs around small tables;
the large section directly in front of the stage is set up differently
for each concert depending on the type of music and the size of the
crowd. For Sinead, it was completely empty - all standing room.
After the opening act (rap, of course - with an attempt at audience
participation that didn't work all that well), Sinead came out in the
centre of a single white spotlight, the only light on an entirely dark
stage. She started with Jackie, and continued straight into Mandinka.
There was nothing else in the world except her and her voice, raging,
at times almost screaming. The accompaniment must have come from
somewhere - the band was there in the shadows - but the only centre
of attention, the source of all the explosive energy, was Sinead herself.

Afterwards, the CD sounded very calm and restrained.

This is primarily of interest to Bay Area members of the list --
apologies to the rest of y'all, but I wanted to get this out
quickly.

Last night (unfortunately I was not near a terminal) the Bay Area stop
on the tour was announced -- Sunday 6/3, 7:30 PM at Berkeley Community
Theatre. Tickets went on sale today (4/29) at 10 AM. I got through to
BASS/Ticketmaster on the phone at about 12:30, and a second concert was
announced for the following day, Monday 6/4 at 7:30. The Sunday show
was down to single seats, but I was able to get 6 prime seats together
for the Monday show. (Sorry, JITRs, they're spoken for...)

If you see this and haven't acted yet, I recommend dropping what
you're doing and hitting the phones or a ticket location -- BCT is a
relatively small hall, and I hope there are seats left when most of
you get this Monday morning. Perhaps there will be 3rd show, but I
doubt it.

Sure, I'll interview her. Just tell me when and where to meet her!
(When I interviewed Kate Bush I spent about six months on the phone
harrassing record company people in order to get the interview.)

The other day Pat was wondering what burning Troy refered to. If you
look on the liner notes, of The Lion and the Cobra, you will notice
the following:

Mandinka & I Want Your Hands On Me mixed by terrence morris (a.k.a. t. roy)

Hope this helps

This is an accurate description of her show at the Stone in SF too.
Sinead wore a plain black jumpsuit, there was no fancy lighting,
and the other musicians were very much in the background. Some of
the music was taped; Sinead took a break off-stage while the intro
to "Troy" played over the speakers. She drinks Evian.

It was interesting (and slightly annoying) to watch her do her own
production while performing; there were *lots* of hand gestures to
her sound man.

The only non-Lion&Cobra song I remember her doing was "Jump in the River",
a few months before it was due to be released. She sang "fucked"
instead of "did it" in the chorus.

Sinead chose a rap group to open. Hopefully the "special guest" will
be a little more interesting this time around.

>The audience seemed to include far too many people pushing and shoving to
>get near the stage and who were there because she was (and I guess still is)
>a rising star. They seemed not to be there for the music.

Much better crowd in SF. The show became "presented by" the local
modern music station a few weeks after it had already sold out,
so most of the tickets had gone to established Sinead fans before
the unwashed masses discovered her. The radio station sent along
an obnoxious DJ to "introduce the artist", and he was roundly
booed from the stage. The crowd was pin-drop silent during the
songs, except for several spontaneous bursts of applause after
Sinead belted out the chorus to an "vocally intense" song like
"Jackie" or "Jerusalem".

I have orchestra right seats for the show on June 3rd. Damn I'm good.

Hey, subscribers to the Kate Bush mailing list get to
call themselves "love-hounds", but what's the catchy name for
members of the Sinead mailing list? "JITRs" certainly
doesn't cut it; it's practically unpronouncable. Except
maybe as "jitters", which does have a nice ring to it.

River jumpers? Wetbacks?

No way! I've given up on that sort of thing. From now on it's all
stuff like "What is your favorite kind of cow?" and "Who does your
toenails?"

If you read the poem (just as a reminder it's "No Second Coming" by
William Butler YEATS, an Irishman -- Keats is English, and some folks
are picky about distinguishing those two countries...) it is very clear
that Ms. O'Connor is referring to the poem, and Yeats is definitely
referring to the ancient city of Troy. If you've been, say, browsing
through the Aeneid of Virgil recently, you might recall that Troy was
dusted (indeed, burned down) due to the fallout from a vicious love
triangle (Paris, Menelaus, and the infamous Helen). Yeats echos this
triangle, with rabid Irish nationalist Maude Gonne as Helen, himself
as the injured Menelaus, and the fight for Irish independence filling
in for the Trojan Paris. I think Ms. O'Connor is picking up on Yeats
(and Virgil's) theme of an inevitable violent end -- to a relationship
or whatever -- that since there is "no other Troy" for her to burn, her
intense destructive passion is going to turn in on her relationship and
herself. I dunno, seems this sense of an unrestrainable, destructive
passion is a very Irish idea. Certaintly, Yeats is a basis of modern
Irish writing, and I for one count Ms. O'Connor as a major modern Irish
writer.

Yo, sorry for the lecture, but one of the things that fascinates me about
Ms. O'Connor is thought and wisdom that lurk around in even her craziest
songs.

By the way, what IS mandika, anyway?
