Art Résumé

artist statement

A photograph captures a fragment in time and space that might otherwise go unnoticed. My focus is on those subjects, often ironic or humorous, which may indeed pass without recognition or thought.

...essentially, the camera makes everyone
a tourist in other people's reality...
-- Susan Sontag, "Melancholy Objects"

My body of work is mostly landscape. I do not manipulate the scene in any way; everything is as I have found it. For the gritty "urban landscapes," which comprise the bulk of my work from 1989-1999, I work in black & white because it appears more real or authentic than color -- it speaks more simply and directly to the viewer and represents the subject without embellishment. Unless color is an important element in the work, it distracts from the intended (and the unintended) communication.
